We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

Yup. It's too late because governments and big business won't do what needs to be done now because it's a vote loser (g) and affects profits (BB).

When the planet is so fucked that neither of those things matter any more there will be nothing we can do but suffer.

And maybe die out as a species eventually.

Which would be good news for the planet because it would slowly recover without us here fucking it up.

This is also my view. The earth will be well shot of us.

babbscrabbs · 18/07/2023 11:13

Everyone on this thread who's scared and concerned...

Please join a climate action group

If EVERYONE who felt this way protested, lobbied, or petitioned - we could not be ignored.

If you sit there anxious doing nothing it won't help you or your children - instead, you can fight for change, and these groups are brilliant at showing you how you can help within your comfort zone. It will help you feel better when you're doing something constructive too.

There's even some brilliant groups specifically for parents and mums.

Glad I amused you. But it's the way I was brought up. I love my meat and my mam included it in every meal. Nothing wrong with that

Well there is something wrong with that actually.

But I get the feeling you will get angry and defensive when that's pointed out.

That's your opinion which I don't care for.

Some people on mumsnet must be SO disappointed that we haven't got this massive heatwave in the UK that they've got in Europe - and elsewhere over the world... Nothing to complain about at the moment have they ??? Sad Oh maybe the rain - let's complain about the rain a bit ... even though there's hardly been any really.

Have we had a 'have you got your heating on' thread this week? NO? You're slipping folks... 😆

Yes staggering that our Govt is not building or even planning to build more water storage facilities, esp for agri.

We get plenty enough rain in the UK, trouble is 99% of it washes out to sea along with millions of tonnes of top soil.

If you eat meat, don't pretend to care about this. You will look stupid.

I don't eat meat because I don't like it and I don't really care because I am in the last leg of life now anyway

RoyalGala · 18/07/2023 11:15

Emmamoo89 · 18/07/2023 11:12

I think your comment is pretty stupid

It is indeed factually accurate what the previous poster said.

babbscrabbs · 18/07/2023 11:15

Also

You don't have to be perfect before you demand change from the government

All of us, inherently, will be hypocrites, because just by existing we are producing CO2.

Accept that, do what you can, and fight for systemic change which is what will maker the biggest difference fastest.

OrbandSpectacle · 18/07/2023 11:13

This is also my view. The earth will be well shot of us.

Agree with this too, without humans the earth will thrive. We are the ones dependant on the planet for survival and the animals.

Emmamoo89 · 18/07/2023 11:12

It's certainly extremely simplistic.

A vegan who washes their towels after one use, flies frequently, has six children, an SUV and two homes is not greener than someone who does none of those things but has the occasional roast chicken or ham sandwich.

Still using victorian sized reservoirs is just absolute insanity. However, zero thinking from any of our recent governments.

I will preface this because I don’t know how true/accurate this is.

I once read that it makes no difference what the general population does, the only way real change will happen is if the billionaires and mega corporations change their ways and stop their super consumption. So essentially we are powerless.

How do the billionaires and megacorps make their money?

Do you really think the consumer has nothing to do with that?

MsRosley · 18/07/2023 11:19

At this point I think our best hope is developing super-intelligent AI and pray it comes up with a viable technology to reduce carbon in the atmosphere.

Againstmachine · 18/07/2023 11:19

RoyalGala · 18/07/2023 11:10

You have a fair point there, it’s one of the reasons I went vegan but also ethical. Just need to add - be prepared for the pile-on..

I hope there is noone eating soy as the growth of this is just as bad.

Zilla1 · 18/07/2023 11:21

HNRT and trivial point but jet stream unlikely. Gulf stream a different situation though might make Winters uncomfortable.

There is one surprise in the current political climate though.

This. Everyone always has something they consider the "most important" way of cutting their carbon footprint. Hence why we have comments like "if only everyone would just stop flying!" Now for this person it's "if only everyone would just stop eating meat". Most likely they both do what the other person thinks the more important. The jet setting vegans and the meat eating staycationers.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2023 11:21

BansheeofInisherin · 18/07/2023 08:47

I don't know what more I can do.

We don't eat meat.
We don't have a car ( central London so easy not to)
We fly long haul once a year but our families live abroad so hard not to, as it is to visit them, not a holiday
We don't buy many clothes or stuff and buy a lot on Vinted or in charity shops

Grow your own veg? Compost? Consume less other stuff? Food miles? Dry washing outside?

If we all did what we can do it all adds up. Some of us need a car but don't fly . Some of us can dry washing outside. Some of us can't compost but don't need a car...etc etc etc. Eg I don't fly but use a car . (Disabilities related) we don't use much heating in the flat but ds eats meat and drinks a lot of milk.

I was pondering... grew veg on the windowsill next to the sofa...if one opens one's mouth and bites off the lettuce from the plant, does that make it negative food miles centimetres? Grin

Heh? That’s a huge stretch right there, you’re assuming vegans do all those/have all those things. It’s not simplistic, it’s a scientifically proven fact that a vegan diet is better for the environment.

We shouldn't be giving excessive medical care to 70+ age people, I'm nearing that age and don't want or expect medical interventions to keep me alive

So when a person reaches 70 and gets ill with cancer or some other disease it’s no hospital, or medical interventions? Just some painkillers and off you go to die my dear?
I mean that’s one way to deal with it I suppose but I don’t think many will be with you there 🤣

Zilla1 · 18/07/2023 11:23

@MsRosley, let's hope that AI avoids the most obvious and quickest ways of reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane.

Definitely too late. People on here talking about using tumble driers all the time, competitive bedding and towel washing, multiple showers or you’re seen as ‘grim’. Just seeing all the kids driven to school in 4x4s, most kids these days have no idea of walking places because their parents drive everywhere.

Then you have Rishi using helicopters constantly and private jets and yachts.

I’m on the weather thread. I have to use my tumble dryer if I want my washing to dry. It has done nothing but rain here for the last couple of weeks. I’d never have dry towels if I had to hang them outside.

I have to drive to get to work, I do shifts and public transport does not run early enough (or direct) for me to get there for an early shift. Even if we moved closer (which we can’t afford), I’d still have to use my car. It’s not that simple.

maddening · 18/07/2023 11:23

IthinkIamAnAlien · 18/07/2023 08:22

I think what you've said is too big for most people to take on board but I completely agree with you. I feel scared a lot of the time, there aren't enough world leaders who are able or willing to say something dramatic needs to happen. They're all arguing amongst themselves and then there's Putin.
The effects of climate change are speeding up and we're not going to escape.

It requires the world to agree and act on it - but you are not going to get that from the big players - China and India with huge populations and rising and poverty that means that people there cannot prioritise environment and therefore will not drive their governments to do so. Russia is just a no - it doesn't give a shit about it's own people let alone the world, the US makes noises but gives no shits.

VikingVolva · 18/07/2023 11:23

SpinCycles · 18/07/2023 10:26

Birth rates may be declining, but all Western nations are importing millions more people who will become consumers (of more food, water, energy) and add to the climate footprint as people in the West consume far more.

There will be no people to "import". Almost every country in the world is on a path to exponential population decline. As I said, sub-Saharan African countries are the only exception.

I wonder what that'll mean for the Commonwealth?

And whether it'll become our most influential alliance

WestwardHo1 · 18/07/2023 11:24

Emmamoo89 · 18/07/2023 11:13

That's your opinion which I don't care for.

See?

It's been proven beyond a doubt that eating less meat is one of the major things an individual can do to reduce their own carbon footprint. Some things are just facts, not opinions.

Yet when they are pointed out, people choose to feel judged and become defensive. And then they entrench themselves in their own position, crying about "opinions".

maddening · 18/07/2023 11:24

Ps agreeing with the post I quoted
