If we all die out so what, there have been loads of different ages all through history, the actual planet will still be here

It's true of course but the decline will be horrific for many

You can blame industries as much as you want, but if people stopped demanding cheap flights, fast fashion, and convenience food their market would disappear.

We create their market and they fill it. We need to shut that market off.

... but people wont, who exactly is going to stop their one holiday flight a year whilst they see the wealthier jetting around the world at a constant rate?

So whats needed is a flight quota, we ALL have one or two flights a year, no exceptions Mr Sunak.

Advertising creates the market place, none of us were demanding smart phones until apple etc convinced us we needed one..... ready meals? nope we didn't want those either until we were hit with all those "On the Go...busy lives..." advertising shit.

Yes agreed, scientists alarmed at how quickly it's all unraveling

In no way is it affecting the majority of us though. People in the west are sitting pretty under their AC units for the most part, looking at their iPhones, wondering if where next to go on holiday and what’s the best AI deal.
Population decline will hit in around 2050 when the people on this thread are 75+ and even more for their kids when they are 70+ Not enough work force. Not enough food, medical personnel, production, no one to earn the money or do the work to keep it all going for the huge huge elderly population.

I'm sorry but I couldn't have a meat free day my dad's a butcher I've grown up on it 🤣 had the best home cooked meals. I got fed very well.

Weird argument. My Dad was a milkman - I still manage to not drink milk 🤷‍♀️

This made me laugh. My dads makes jelly so I have to eat it every day.

Oh a lump of spinning rock and salt water will still be here, for sure.

10 theoretical kids in a 3rd world country belonging to a single couple are unlikely to amount to the emissions that even one british child would make.

CompletekyConfused · 18/07/2023 08:23

The sad truth is we as individuals can't make any difference by not using cars or changing our diets. It's fine beyond that. Even if millions in the UK changed their habits it wouldn't have an impact. We need global territories (China) and industries to make huge changes - going vegan won't make a joy of difference even if we all do it.

Yes I agree with this. Changes need to be at high levels in order to make a difference. Putting your wash on at 30 won't make much difference.

Catspyjamas17 · 18/07/2023 10:49

Change needs to come from governments and corporations, not individual people cycling to work.

Yes, I agree, though I think individuals should take reasonable actions to reduce their consumption.

For individuals to take action though, it's unreasonable to expect altruism where the cost is too great - financially, behaviourally, socially etc.

The changes have to be a no-brainer, or offer some benefit in doing them other than a tiny piss on a distant giant inferno.

ForTheSnarkWasABoojumYouSee · 18/07/2023 10:49

Catspyjamas17 · 18/07/2023 10:37

I think what people can do to make a change is give what they can to charities which help girls stay in education beyond the age of 11 in countries where there is disparity in educational opportunities for girls, and where they get married young and are expected to have lots of children. It can make a dramatic difference to birth rates in these countries in a short space of time if girls can just stay in school. With birth rates well below 2 in most countries, it doesn't take much to tip the balance and actually start to make the global population fall.

Educating girls and giving them the choice to have no more than the number of babies they'd prefer is always a win win option.

But it won't make the population fall immediately, because most countries are still riding the wave of the population boom of the 1960s-1990s. There are so many more young women in their twenties and thirties having babies than there are of their grandmothers' age who are dying that even if each of them only have one child the population still grows in the short term.

Lots of people are being effected here in the UK. We have had unseasonable wild fires, more flooding, climate change related increases in death and morbidity, increased food prices due to lack of availability due to climate changes. It’s only going to get worse. So even if we are psychopathic enough to not give two hoots about those in the countries hot first and worst, we are on borrowed time. I bet we have a horrible heat wave this summer. Last summer was the first time I’ve ever had to wear damp clothes at work just to keep me cool enough to cope.

NewNovember · 18/07/2023 10:50

In the West we need the population to rise not fall. We are storing up huge problems for ourselves.

No we don't. We need to concentrate on a slow and sustainable long-term decrease.

Catspyjamas17 · 18/07/2023 10:53

People will get involved, for example, with local initiatives that make a difference. A safe cycling route to school (and decent buses) gets dozen of cars off the road in the morning- we can see the difference, it's much more tangible than wondering whether my tofu is sustainable.

It’s a way to cope with the grief though. I know me cycling or eating plant based isn’t going to save the world, but I’m limiting my participation in the things that are ducking it up. I want to be able to tell my children I tried.

fromdownwest · 18/07/2023 10:55

I am staying hopeful that science will get us out of this pickle. We can not rely on human will to change things, as it is not in 'our' nature.

Having spent a lot of time in the far east, me turning my heating down 1 degree is futile. They consume and dispose in obscene levels.

I do have faith in science though, Fusion energy is looking feasible over the next few decades, with one due to be online by 2035. This in theory could supply all the worlds energy needs, with zero negative output.

ITER - the way to new energy

ITER is the world’s largest fusion experiment. Thirty-five nations are collaborating to build and operate the ITER Tokamak, the most complex machine ever designed, to prove that fusion is a viable source of large-scale, safe, and environmentally friend...

It's too late, but let's face it you have mumsnetters who can't use a towel more than once, having heating on at 25 degrees in winter, and drive their range rovers 1/4 mile to the shops.

Yes. You read some posts and wonder what the hell some people are thinking.

It’s already decreased? How do you not know this? The amount of babies born in the last 20 years is too few! And it’s getting worse. Unless the majority of us have 3 babies it’s just not enough (unless you take away medical care for the elderly 70+ of course) It’s you and your friends / siblings who will feel the impact and then to a far greater degree your children. This will go alongside climate change, not instead of it.

I really don't think it helps when the liberal elite are telling a family of four that their two weeks in Spain is destroying the world. As they jet off to their 10000sq m mansion in LA.

It has been made a class war, by the hypocritical elite telling us what we shoudl be doing.

I don't know if it's true or not but if so then it's really sad.

I am doing the best I can. I gave up going abroad before the pandemic and will certainly never fly again. I try and cycle/walk everywhere and have done for years.

In fact my car is off the road atm and has been for a while and am considering not fixing it. I just have to dovetail my weekly supermarket run with when dh isn't using his car. I bike 14 mile a day round trip to work. I'm vegetarian, I think vegan would be a step too far. I try and be careful about buying stuff, using stuff, etc.

I know not everyone will do this, I know the majority won't. But it's so sad. Surely if everyone did it then there would be a difference?

Wrong about raising cattle being carbon light because of the grass they graze on capturing carbon.

Fightyouforthatpie · 18/07/2023 10:59

midgetastic · 18/07/2023 08:17

Yes

Drastic action is needed or things could get much worse though

Even hotter longer heatwaves

Many coastal cities under water

We need to stop emissions now

So change your diet to avoid meat and diary

Hide the car keys

Message your MP and every orgnistion you buy from to demand action

😂How will we "stop emissions" exactly?

What? the older population in europe will very shortly die off inc me! older people don't live forever, meaning Europes population imbalance will correct itself, we just need to manage this change, what we don't need is more children, thats just a Ponzi scheme.

Then of course there is migration.
