To ask what Nordic country you would move to, if forced?

Just that really. Bored on a Saturday evening and wonder what others might think! What would be your number one choice, ranking from favourite to least. For reference the Nordic countries are Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.

@Crikeyalmighty Interesting what you say about people not moving as much. Never thought about it but it’s true.

I do love where I live in the south though, and would not really want to move.

You left one out. For me it would be

Estonia/Finland battle on the first place, Sweden next then Norway and Denmark definately the last.

Sweden, I love the language, the people, culture, food, everything, but we have great friends there and I feel so at home whenever there. I've lived and studied in Norway too, it's beautiful, but definitely Sweden for me!

Crikeyalmighty · 22/07/2023 13:42

@thousandbirds Our first choice to move to was Lund- we couldn't move there though as we moved during covid and at that point Sweden wasn't accepting flights in and you couldn't go across from Copenhagen either, so we couldn't view any houses to rent!!! Denmark was accepting flights and hence that's why we ended up in Copenhagen. I like southern Sweden a lot too - with the advantage of using Kastrup airport as well .

Beezknees · 22/07/2023 13:47

I don't know much about any of them but I'd pick Sweden, I don't know why but it appeals to me more.

Spookyseasonmum · 22/07/2023 13:55

Either Norway or Iceland but I’d also love to move to Svalbard, unfortunately it’s a rather expensive place to live plus I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable taking my daily walk with a rifle due to polar bears

Estonia is not a Nordic country.

A lot of Estonians define it as one, and consider themselves to be Nordic. I believe at one point it was on course to accepted as one, but the Soviets put paid to that. It’s definitely more culturally Nordic than it is Baltic, imo.

For me, of the countries listed:
Norway
Denmark
Iceland
Finland
Sweden

thousandbirds · 22/07/2023 14:11

@whumpthereitis Estonia is definitely not a Nordic country, so op did not forget to mention Estonia.

Not officially, no, but my point is an argument can be made for its inclusion culturally and even linguistically (Estonian is a Finnic language).

”An important element in Estonia's post-independence reorientation has been closer ties with the Nordic countries, especially Finland and Sweden. In December 1999, then Estonian foreign minister (and President of Estonia from 2006 until 2016) Toomas Hendrik Ilves delivered a speech titled "Estonia as a Nordic Country" to the Swedish Institute for International Affairs.[12]In 2003, the foreign ministry also hosted an exhibit called "Estonia: Nordic with a Twist".[7]
In 2015, the Estonian prime minister Taavi Rõivasdefined the country's narrative as a "New Nordic Country", or "Uus Põhjamaa".[13]
A conference comprising the heads of the coalition government was held in September 2016, discussing Estonia's outlook as a Nordic country.[14]”

Estonia is semi-Nordic, its not quite but it really wants to be.

I moved to Finland 16 years ago, you couldn't pay me to move back to the UK. Has its downsides for sure, I mean 16 years and I'm still not fluent!(and I've been learning Finnish all my life, just not very well, thanks mum) But the fact that I can walk 2 minutes down the road and jump into a crystal clear lake to swim, I can walk 2 minutes in a different direction and pick bilberries, lingonberries, forest strawberries and wild raspberries while walking through a beautiful forest, can not only leave my front door unlocked while we're home but in the summer propped open all day long to let the air flow, and can walk home from the pub by myself at night without fear* makes it worth it. Plus the schools are pretty alright, no need to worry about school uniforms, and nursery is so damn cheap, I don't even pay anything for my 5 year old (who is still in nursery for another year, then a year of preschool at the same nursery)

*I don't live in any of the cities though, not sure I'd feel so confident with the last thing in Helsinki for instance these days, youth crime is rising unfortunately.

Finns are weird though but it could be worse, they could be Swedish...

RitzyMcFitzy · 22/07/2023 14:27

I haven't been to all of them so can't say for certain.

I'd be reluctant though. The whole jante law thing is a bit weird.

kittykarate · 22/07/2023 14:28

Norway or Finland for me. The only thing that puts me off Finland is the complexity of the language - I can order a cup of coffee but that's my limit.

GolgafrinchamB · 22/07/2023 14:40

Norway - the cost of booze would keep me on the straight and narrow, and it is the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

Finland, Iceland and the Faroes are too unpopulated, I'd hate that. Also Iceland has so few trees, I need lots of trees.

Lingonberries! I went to Finland a few years ago and the lingonberry juice was beautiful.

I'm not big on lingonberries, just pick a few as I walk for a snack, and definitely not a fan of lingonberry juice, me and my brother used to call it Lutheran juice as it was always served at church events and tasted like misery. But the rest of the berries are good, and my bloke loves lingonberries in his morning porridge.

StellaJohanna · 22/07/2023 14:54

Norway. I would love to see the Fjords and wildlife I follow a Youtuber who lives out in the sticks. it looks great.

Rockschooldropout · 22/07/2023 15:01

Norway - I’ve always loved it , I have lots of Norwegian friends who tell me it’s a beautiful country but it is expensive however I’d move there in a heartbeat , plus I have a Nordic name so it’s clearly meant to be 🤣

iklboo · 22/07/2023 15:20

Norway - and I wouldn't have to be forced.

thousandbirds · 22/07/2023 15:43

@whumpthereitis I know the facts. I know they really want to belong to the Nordic countries, but like you said, they don’t.

My Norwegian ex is rather obsessed with Svalbard. Admittedly he's from northern Norway so Svalbard is his idea of heaven but I'm very relieved we never married as tramping round Svalvard every holiday would not be my idea of fun 😂(We met when we both lived in France so there's a fairly big expectations gap between Paris and Svalbard 😜)

Good for you I guess?

I didn’t say Estonia was considered to be a Nordic country, at least not officially. I said an argument could be made for their inclusion, and that many Estonians do indeed consider themselves to be Nordic.

Sirzy · 22/07/2023 16:10

Olden in Norway. Beautiful place

thousandbirds · 22/07/2023 16:47

@whumpthereitis I don’t why it would be good for me? It was just a fact. Estonia is a stunning country, more people should consider going there.

Estonia is not a Nordic country.

Says a brit who hasnt been to Finland or Estonia.

You might want to start your journey of education by listening to both countries national anthem-which is the same btw.
