To ask what Nordic country you would move to, if forced?

Just that really. Bored on a Saturday evening and wonder what others might think! What would be your number one choice, ranking from favourite to least. For reference the Nordic countries are Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.

Well you wouldn’t really have to tbf, as most of us speak English.

A -10 degrees winter with snow actually feels warmer than a +5 windy and rainy day in London believe it or not! The snow also makes it a lot brighter.

Stepford Wives, what on earth are you on about? 😂

Those nordic countries with their multilingual populations really do put us in Anglo nations to shame...we can just about manage one language.

I also don't know if its cause we are stuck on islands (UK/Ireland) so are more isolated but other Europeans seem much more connected with each other. You can hop in your car and go from Stockholm to Copenhagen (via that Oresund bridge) to Hamburg etc. For us to travel its not so straightforward. Only two weeks ago I was at Torr Head in the north of Ireland (not far from where I live) and I could see Scotland (Mull of Kintyre) 12 miles away in the distance, very very close, but to actually travel across the water I'd have to get a flight or take a boat. No such barriers for continental Europeans which is something I've always envied.

Good on you for learning at least some of the language! Not easy either. 👏🏻 I have many friends with Finnish parents, and neither of them sadly speak any Finnish at all. They were taught to only speak in Swedish on purpose, even though they lived in Finland. It’s sad the way it was back then.

That's such a shame. I have a friend with a Finnish mother too, I don't think he speaks a word of it. Or Swedish for that matter.

Yes I "attended" a webinar run by a Norwegian consumer association a few weeks ago. The English spoken was just amazing. I think Norwegians are born speaking perfect English :)

I didn't think Boris's idea to build a bridge from Scotland to Northern Ireland was that mad, actually, although it would probably have to be a tunnel, given the weather in the Irish sea. But if you can do it across the Oresund...

It's a pity that the Channel Tunnel is so restricted and you can't just drive through it in some respects.

midsomermurderess · 21/07/2023 20:51

The suicide rate in Finland is not, and hasn't been for some years, the highest in the world.

N0ëlle · 21/07/2023 20:55

I've been to Denmark and I liked it, but I like the sound of Swedish more so I'll say Sweden (norwegian sounds like brummies!)

I couldnt cope with Finland as they all talk in a low scratchy way. It's horrendous.

N0ëlle · 21/07/2023 20:58

I would love a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland. There was a space on the last irish census for predictions and I put that I hoped there be a bridge between Scotland and NI

SirVixofVixHall · 21/07/2023 20:59

Sweden.

GarlicGrace · 21/07/2023 21:03

Denmark. Because bacon, and it's the most southerly option.
Norway because everyone I know who's been there loves it.
Finland if I had to move to the frozen North, because it's interesting.
Sweden really doesn't appeal to me.

I'd rather make room for all you North-lovers by moving south!

IfLoveBelievesInMe · 21/07/2023 21:06

Finland or Iceland because they are beautiful

octoegg · 21/07/2023 21:06

Faroe Islands, many of the nicest people I've ever met are from there. As someone else said, if I could speak the language I'd be there in a flash! Beautiful place.

We went to Denmark recently and it made me realise what a shithole England is. The people there are friendly and polite and sensible. It felt very safe and the outdoors way of life there seemed much more integrated into the infrastructure. It’s the first time I’ve genuinely considered emigrating.

Coming from Ireland, I went to uni in England and couldn't believe the petty crime in this particular northern English city (wong say which one).

The most shocking thing was perspex screens in shops so you couldn't actually touch the food (felt like I was at the bank)...a packet of chocolate hobnobs being passed through a slit was one of those surreal moments. Another was seeing bars on ground floor windows....I was like wtf? Instantly thought of Marty McFly in Back to the Future II when he returns to a crime riddled 1985..."I dont remember bars being on these windows". One young lad with a bag of eggs just throwing them at people across the street, another wft moment (there were quite a few).

Obviously it was a city so there will be more crime, but coming from a place where it's almost non existent it was quite an eye opener. What was ironic is as soon as any bar/club hearc my Irish accent they thought "oh this could be trouble" (I was in England during the tail end of the troubles)...the news reports had totally skewed the perception of the north of Ireland.

Having said that, the people were so friendly. Plus England is actually very safe in global terms:

I love Iceland, but I think the cold dark winters would get me down.
I don't know the other countries well enough - if you'd like yo fund an extended tour, I'm happy to go and research 😃

Threecacti · 21/07/2023 21:10

Gosh which one.

I've been to them all and they are all fantastic!! I genuinely couldn't choose,

Wouldyouguess · 21/07/2023 21:12

They wouldn't be forcing me, id move to any of them in a heartbeat if I could get a job over there! Sweden or Finland preferably.

ToWhitToWhoo · 21/07/2023 21:14

I've been to Norway and Finland and loved both. But I was there in summertime; not sure I'd be so keen on a Scandinavian winter!

Probably at the moment the one I'd like least would be Sweden, because of the Sweden Democrats being in the government. But these things change rapidly.

Chypre · 21/07/2023 21:16

None. I grew up close to Nordics in the Baltics and I HATE the snow, the dark, the cold AND summer mosquitos and ticks and gnats. And baltics are still few degrees warmer than Finland, so big nope from me. Would rather kill myself. Imagine starting every school run with shoveling snow off the driveway for 6 months straight, just no no no no….. (yes I am traumatized).

Spanielsarepainless · 21/07/2023 21:17

Finland. Best friend is Finnish, country looks and sounds wonderful. Teaches me a word of Finnish when we meet. I live in hope of being invited to her house there, on a lake. Drool...

PonyPatter44 · 21/07/2023 21:22

I used to go to Finland twice a year for work. Once in summer, once in winter. Absolutely loved it. Finnish people are weirder than weird, but they are kind and polite, and happy to be friends as long as you don't talk. I know two words of Finnish. I would move to Helsinki in a heartbeat!

Isntthisniceandnew · 21/07/2023 21:23

Denmark. I've already been looking into it.

toffeeappleglow · 21/07/2023 21:29

I've only been to Norway and Sweden. Norway's natural beauty is off the charts spectacular in spots, but everything was so expensive when I visited. The Swedish countryside is lovely, too, but less 'amazing', from what I saw. DH has family in Sweden, so that's where we'd choose to live.

Florabeebaby · 21/07/2023 21:34

Finland. But then I am finnish so it makes sense 😁

vevyter · 21/07/2023 21:37

Denmark (I have friends there), Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland. I’ve been to all and loved all but I don’t think I could live in Finland or Iceland despite loving to visit them! If you asked me to rank the Scandi countries I’d like to holiday in my answers would be totally different

Diddykong · 21/07/2023 21:48

Any of them but probably Norway first (fjords), Denmark, Sweden, Finland and then Iceland (after reading an article that said global warming means increased volcanic activity)

SerafinasGoose · 21/07/2023 22:20

I've been to them all but loved Norway most: truly special country with wonderful people. Plus it's the land of my ancestors. Beautiful in all but the long hours of winter darkness.
