To ask what Nordic country you would move to, if forced?

Just that really. Bored on a Saturday evening and wonder what others might think! What would be your number one choice, ranking from favourite to least. For reference the Nordic countries are Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.

Have always been drawn to anything Swedish, think cos I fell madly in love with a swede on hols at 16, and love Abba. I did spend a few days in Stockholm but injured myself and saw very little. A revisit there and travel around has always been on my bucket list.

freetheunicorn1 · 15/07/2023 23:53

Norway simply because it would be the easiest move for the industries that me and OH work in.

SophiaElise · 16/07/2023 00:00

Norway as I've been to all and it was my favourite of the 5.

Beeswood · 16/07/2023 00:01

Norway.
I have been there twice on holiday, the first time staying with my friend's Norwegian grandparents It is so fresh and clean.
Last time, we visited Alesund, I really felt I could live there.

MaybeOneAndDone · 16/07/2023 00:05

I have a vague memory of reading something about how, in Finland, small talk and chatting to strangers on public transport, etc. is even more frowned upon than in the UK.

I am am fairly introverted, so it sounds like bliss!

Seasidemumma77 · 16/07/2023 00:06

Norway, but probably swayed by the fact my great grandparents were Norwegian

BodegaSushi · 16/07/2023 00:08

This place! Svalbard

I love watching this woman's tiktoks, it's looks so beautiful and while living there has many challenges, I love the idea of idyllic winter solace ❄️

Stompythedinosaur · 16/07/2023 00:12

Finland. I lived there for six months as a student and had a great time.

babbscrabbs · 16/07/2023 00:13

Finland - is closest to Russia which worries me

Sweden - I'd like the clothes but I think the food is probably basic

Denmark - home of Lego... But I hear they are hot on punctuality and difficult to get to know, would love to visit but maybe not live

I've always been quite intrigued by Iceland

Norway - rich country with a great quality of life but I feel slightly uncomfortable about the fact they make most of their money from plundering the sea - either for oil or fish - and they eat lots of whale.

Hellokittymania · 16/07/2023 00:17

I’m not sure if I could live somewhere that forces abortion from anyone who may have a possible baby with down syndrome. But on the flipside, I spoke with some colleagues last year at a conference, and they told me that the employment rate for blind people in Iceland is quite high, some thing I do approve of, and that on the no mosquitoes, and Hot swimming pools, I might go for it. Also, I do have a friend who works in Iceland and has been there for a long time.

I have seen a few of her videos on YouTube and I agree with you about the long dark winters, but I would probably go mad in the summer with the constant daylight. I'm also concerned I wouldn't be able to go out for my daydreamy walks with polar bears threatening to rip me apart 🥺.

Wildwildwildwest · 16/07/2023 00:18

@BodegaSushi this is interesting! With all the darkness my mental health would plummet living there + the cold. But it is very very beautiful. Definitely not for the faint hearted

Iceland, yes! Best holiday I had in my 20s, just lovely, also I like volcanoes (at a distance). I’ve not been to the other countries so they may also be lovely, but if I had to choose quickly, that would be Iceland. Norway probably second. Dh has worked in Copenhagen and said there was a lot of topless sunbathing, and no one needs to see that from me 😩

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/07/2023 00:26

I live in Denmark. 20 minutes from Legoland. Love it.

Definitely not Sweden. They talk funny. 😉

Have you seen Welcome to Sweden? V v funny.

Wildwildwildwest · 16/07/2023 00:28

@Hellokittymania i can 100% guarantee abortions for women carrying children with Down syndrome is not a thing. However, the percentage of women that opt for screening is very high.

Probably Finland with Norway a very close second. Although Finnish is a hard language to learn. And I'd probably spend a lot of time cursing myself for not getting a bottle of wine when alko was open.

Wildwildwildwest · 16/07/2023 00:29

@Hellokittymania as in, abortion is never ever forced

Finland!
The country that brought the world Michael Monroe & Hanoi Rocks! Lovely man & great band!
Don't know about the rest of the place though....

HappilyContentTheseDays · 16/07/2023 00:40

Iceland without a doubt. Absolutely beautiful country, amazing scenery, wonderful people. I have travelled around the country and spent many months there. I like the Icelandic culture and way of thinking.

After that, Norway as I did live there once. But only in the far north; southern Norway is a bit tame despite the spectacular fjords etc., it's just got too much of a European feel, I prefer the dramatic difference of the north. Northern Finland is also lovely, extremely difficult language to learn though and very reticent people. Sweden is beautiful but the national culture somewhat odd and off beat in a way that doesn't suit me.

I have never been to Denmark but have never really fancied it. Seems to be a very flat land....the language is also not easy to understand when it's spoken, although written down some of it can be worked out if you know other Scandinavian languages.

OP and @Doingtheboxerbeat interestingly she says that she finds the summers hardest with all of the daylight.

I wonder which I'd find hardest. I'm originally from the tropics, and every year am still surprised by winter with how early it gets dark in the evenings, and equally by how late it stays bright in the summers.

It also poses the additional challenge of living on an island, where all of the food is imported, grocery bills are astronomical (but average salaries are good), and there are only 2 cafes! She also says that there is no public transport and no homes for the elderly, so only people completely self-sufficient can live there.

I'd still like to give it a go, maybe spend a few months of the year there.

DaftyLass · 16/07/2023 00:54

Finland, because I have lots of family there

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 16/07/2023 01:09

Finland because they love heavy metal!

Itawapuddytat · 16/07/2023 01:44

Norway. I used to live there many years ago, so if I were to leave Scotland, I'd move to Norway right away ( especially as I am already fluent in Norwegian and I have a second passport that allows me to live there)

A very good reason. But Norway loves heavy metal too. And so do Sweden. Decisions, decisions...

JeandeServiette · 16/07/2023 02:05

Norway has the oil wealth.
