To ask what Nordic country you would move to, if forced?

Just that really. Bored on a Saturday evening and wonder what others might think! What would be your number one choice, ranking from favourite to least. For reference the Nordic countries are Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.

OP posts:

  1. Denmark because they have the mildest winters
  2. Iceland (if the volcano keeps quiet) because my husband was half-Icelandic and his mother and whole family were lovely.
  3. Norway, spectacular scenery
  4. Sweden...they have a serious immigration problem
  5. Finland. Too close to Russia and bitter winters.
Alaimo · 21/07/2023 15:49

I live in Sweden, but if given the choice I'd say Norway, to be nearer the mountains.

Catspyjamas17 · 21/07/2023 15:51

Denmark I think. I don't think I could cope with the winters and dark further north.

Fugvkk · 21/07/2023 15:51

Norway. It is most similar to the country I currently live and absolutely love (Switzerland).

Second choice would be Sweden.

So funny to read the comments about Finnish people being weird. I‘ve only ever met maybe 5 Finnish people and they were all very strange. Glad it’s not just me who thinks that 😆

ttcat37 · 21/07/2023 15:51

We went to Denmark recently and it made me realise what a shithole England is. The people there are friendly and polite and sensible. It felt very safe and the outdoors way of life there seemed much more integrated into the infrastructure. It’s the first time I’ve genuinely considered emigrating.

LoobyDop · 21/07/2023 15:54

I’d only move somewhere with consistently longer, warmer and drier summers than the NW of England (low bloody bar right now). But it’s a shame because I really like what I’ve heard of the mindset, culture and standards of living in all the Nordic countries.

MarleyJP · 21/07/2023 15:54

Forced? I wouldn't need forcing to leave the UK and move to any of them.😀

I thought that too on holidays in Croatia, The Netherlands and Hungary.

ThrappleApple · 21/07/2023 15:56

Norway, as that's the only one my Danish husband would consider living in 😁

Crikeyalmighty · 21/07/2023 16:00

@ttcat37 I can assure you 15 months after moving back from Copenhagen (for practical reasons) I still think the same- I miss the orderliness, the cleanliness, nice public loos, a great metro , the fact stuff worked!!

Vallmo47 · 21/07/2023 16:05

Being Swedish, I’m intrigued by posters saying they wouldn’t move there because the food is basic. That was my mum’s top reason for not wanting to ever move here 😂. Of course I’m biased but after 23 lovely years living in England I’d still choose Sweden because 1. It’s clean and truly peaceful 2. The nights never end in summer… it’s completely silent and breathtaking 3. You can swim in all the lakes without risking poo being around you 4. The forests - my daughter loves exploring 5. The food culture, Omg the flavours!!!!…. 6. The traditions- so many fun things like Valborg (welcoming spring by doing bonfires and having parties) and Midsummer (dancing around a maypole and getting hammered).
Three massive flaws for me however - 1. The people are usually quite unwelcoming and you.do.not.speak.to.strangers! 2. The immigration issues and 3. If you dislike fish, it’s a nightmare.
Places you just have to visit: Gothenburg, Stockholm and Uppsala.

My least favourite would be Finland, you do understand there are Finnish people there???
Norway would be my top but it’s extremely expensive and I will never move to another country that is not in the EU- our decision was bad enough.
Denmark is overrated, plus they talk with a potato down their throats.
Iceland - have always wanted to go so can’t judge.

MrsTWH · 21/07/2023 16:08

Norway!

PriOn1 · 21/07/2023 16:10

I currently live in the north of Norway, but I can’t sleep when it’s light all night and spending an hour a day clearing snow last winter finally convinced me it’s time to return to Scotland.

If I had to choose out of those five, I’d probably stay in Norway, but live somewhere civilised where the nearest hospital isn’t two and a half hours away and you can get a single flight to the UK and wouldn’t have to go via Oslo every time.

Ezzee · 21/07/2023 16:12

Norway, we have a business and house already in northern Norway (DH spends 6 months of the year living there).
Beautiful place.

Mercy1968 · 21/07/2023 16:16

Finland and I wouldn't have to be forced!
It's beautiful and I can speak some Finnish. Been learning since December as my son is going to live there and has a Finnish fiancee (although she speaks perfect English).

As a Swede who moved back after a similar amount of time abroad I have to say the flaws aren’t as bad as I thought. I moved to Stockholm a year ago thinking it would be hard to make friends again but it’s been so easy. I got to know my neighbours too in no time. People stop and talk when I walk the dog just like they did in the UK etc. immigration though is a problem in a grander sense but not something I notice in my day to day life. The fish, yes that’s tricky. I’m veggie and a lot (maybe all?) holidays are very fish and meat heavy.

Good on you for learning at least some of the language! Not easy either. 👏🏻 I have many friends with Finnish parents, and neither of them sadly speak any Finnish at all. They were taught to only speak in Swedish on purpose, even though they lived in Finland. It’s sad the way it was back then.

Snuppeline · 21/07/2023 16:33

We don’t eat lots of Whale 😂 You can have it if you want to but I don’t know anyone in my social or work network that consume it.

I’ll go right ahead and vote for Norway too, because I live here. I’d compare it to UK in the 1990s in terms of prospects. 18 months after leaving UK I was a homeowner here,
would have never happened for me in Blighty (I was sad to go but glad I did in the end).

thousandbirds · 21/07/2023 16:36

@Snuppeline but you eat whale everday?!😄

It’s funny what some people belive, especially about a country they’ve never been to..

thecatsthecats · 21/07/2023 16:42

Finland - sauna, skimobiles, love the beach in Helsinki and the ferry over to Tallinn is a big plus.

Iceland - hot springs come second to sauna, as they don't include volcano risks.

Denmark - it's not Sweden. Well connected to other countries, I guess. I'm tall, but feel normal if not short there.

Sweden - too right wing, and whilst it won't apply to everyone, I've met too many Swedes who run true to the humourless stereotype to ever get along there.

Norway - ungraded. Haven't been since I was two.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 21/07/2023 16:52

I live in Denmark so I guess here! The winters are fucking long and dark though. Good grief

Denmark - home of Lego... But I hear they are hot on punctuality and difficult to get to know, would love to visit but maybe not live

yeah 3 years in and the only 2 Danish friends I have are because they’re friends of a friend. One she met in random circumstances and the other is an ex. It’s fucking hard to get to know Danes! Lovely people but not bothered about expanding their friendship circle 😂

turbonerd · 21/07/2023 16:53
  1. Iceland 🤩 hardly any people. Bliss
  2. The Faroe Islands.
  3. Norway.
  4. Denmark
  5. Sweden
  6. Finland. Just because it is right next to Russia with a looong shared border. Norway also shares borders with Russia in the far north, but then Norway is very long so you can live far away from that bit.
Crikeyalmighty · 21/07/2023 17:13

@Vallmo47 yes I was baffled by that comment too- we used to go to Sweden a lot when we lived in Copenhagen, Malmo, Lund and Stockholm/Uppsala. Food was always great and in all honesty we found the swedes friendlier than the Danes too - could definitely live there too

thousandbirds · 21/07/2023 17:31

I live in the very south of Sweden, people are very friendly and talkative. It’s nice and clean, and things just work smoothly. It’s a good life. I lived in England for a few years, it’s nice too but I’d say people are honestly way friendlier here.

TwistofFate · 21/07/2023 17:35

Iceland would be my first choice and Sweden my last but really any of them would be fine.
