Men walking around with their hands down trousers

Why do men walk around with their hands down their trousers.

It's disgusting and I see it all the time.

AIBU to think something should be said and done about it?

It’s not their fault, they have magnets in their fingertips that attach to their willies.

I have honestly never seen this in my life

Me neither.
Men are still allowed to put their hands in their pockets I assume.
To retrieve stuff.
Or just chill.

It's not in their pockets, they literally put their hand inside their trousers, and maybe inside their pants, who knows.

It's grim, and really quite common (in both senses of the word).

JudgeRudy · 15/07/2023 22:44

I often do similar when I'm wearing leggings or something with an elastic waist. It's subconscious and a bit like cupping your breasts. It's not something I'd intentionally do 'in public' eg at work, or walking down high street, but I have accidentally done it round other people's homes and 'caught myself'. I believe a lot do it subconsciously, like saying innit or basically, or perhaps biting nails etc. I'm guessing some do do it intensively though. It doesn't bother me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/07/2023 22:45

All the people who 'have never seen it' I'm assuming live in the Cotswolds, not Croydon.

I see it all the time these days, I stare in an attempt to make them realise. If I manage to make eye contact, It works maybe 30% of the time!

Yes, I see this all the time on the bus. It is both gross and infuriating.

Lambiriyani · 15/07/2023 23:00

Might have a front wedgie?

I’ve heard of a bloke in a workplace who used to sit at his desk and put his hand inside his waistband down into his trews whilst sitting at his desk.
He was then seen to withdraw his hand and carry on typing.

Yes my boss did it. I should have taken pictures and used arms amo

@JudgeRudy, how many women that you know cup their breasts?????
IME (and I'm old enough to have met lots of women) I've never seen this once.
Are you possibly projecting here?

Thisbastardcomputer · 15/07/2023 23:07

I had some landscapers working here last summer, most of them had their hands down their trouser's most of the time. I said to my husband they're checking it's behaving it's self.

But it's actually quite gross.

My teenage son's friend does this in my house. I haven't ever said anything but do want to!

Why don't you do the same thing, in front of them? They will get the idea?

It’s vile. Imagine the outcry if women went around like that!

They would love it. That's the issue.

I used to work with young people in South London and they'd do this. I found that a mummy voice and "take your hand out and wash your hands NOW" worked wonders. They'd magically transform from wannabe gangsters into the sweet young men they had been raised to be.

Ditto all the limpy walking nonsense as well. Charming young people but yuk to the hand.

Yup I've only every seen teens and young men do this. Apparently it's meant to imply they might be armed with a knife etc so they look intimidating

Lambiriyani · 15/07/2023 23:00

No, their hands are down there for a long period of time

TomorrowToday · 15/07/2023 23:14

@Unexpectedlysinglemum I've never heard that and I think it's because they like to touch their dicks

I sometimes do, when sat at my desk, just using my mouse, so my left hand is free, across my body with me leaning on it, and I find I do subconsciously end up with my hand over my breast (not under clothes, though.) It's comforting. Don't think any of my colleagues ever noticed, because I'm pretty sure they'd have commented. And I stop when I'm aware.

JudgeRudy · 15/07/2023 23:16

I do know people that do this (2 family members, 1 friend, 1 teen). I don't mean walking around holding them, but lounging on the sofa in a t shirt n no bra, and just touching them. Bellys too especially if wearing PJs. I'm actually picturing one person with her arms down the legs of her PJ bottomstouching her ankles. It's not sexual or communicating anything, it's like twizzling your hair or maybe stroking your arm.
I guess it's a self dotting thing maybe. I'm not saying the majority of women do it all the time but I don't think it's that unusual.
(Sorry but I genuinely don't understand what you mean about projecting)

NewName122 · 15/07/2023 23:17

I have an autistic teen who stresses me out as he keeps doing this when out in public. He says it feels uncomfortable / itchy 🙈 I think it's possibly a sensory thing, I don't know. Stresses me out so much that he will bloody do it when I'm not there and possibly be shouted at or something.

Clementineorsatsuma · 15/07/2023 23:17

Can't believe some of you have never seen this?! It's vile, not least of all because they go into shops and touch stuff....eeeeww.
One was doing it outside my granddaughter's primary school. I politely asked him why he was playing with his genitals outside a school. He stopped very quickly.
It's one of my biggest loathes. It should be illegal to have your hands down your trousers in public.

Startyabastard · 15/07/2023 23:18

Unpopular opinion: do you think their bits are uncomfortable?
I have a male friend and he has said in my company, when talking to another man about when his balls fall out his undies and how he needs to get it back in because it's lopsided.

Startyabastard · 15/07/2023 23:20

I get front wedgies as a woman and sometimes pick them out in public if i am desperate (over my clothes so totally different issue).

A quick tuck is not what we're talking about.

It's wandering the streets with their hands constantly down their pants. If uncomfortable underwear was the issue, it would be all women doing it. But it's all men.

Yes, I always thought this was the reason. Although actually keeping a weapon down your pants seems ridiculously dangerous to me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/07/2023 23:23

Well clearly @Reallybadidea the hand prevents the chopping off of knobs. #Logic.
