40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

Any sympathy for the people that live there?

And what are conditions like for the population of North Africa now?

I noted the response to your question was sympathy for the 61,000 that died in Europe. Nothing in your mention of North Africa. And much of the discussion still on holidays abroad. Never mind the hundreds of thousands dying in Africa and Asia due to climate change induced disaster.
Europe and the West may not care much about climate change today because the biggest victims are from the global South and for now, its wealth is protecting it. But eventually climate change will destroy the West too (bring on the pitchforks!). And before that, there will be other undesirable consequences. We might be in different boats but eventually we are falling off the same cliff

Mummyratbag · 15/07/2023 23:35

I have been in a few very hot places, but the most unbearable was Southern Italy during a heatwave (2007) ..the humidity was unreal. Even at midnight walking more than a 100 metres and I was dripping wet. I had constant headaches until I seriously upped my water intake.

My friend's daughter has travelled to Rhodes to get married, the whole family have gone, I dread to think how she will cope in a heavy wedding dress in the heat & she has a toddler as well.

Even if it was a normal summer (whatever that is), surely she wouldn't have bought a "heavy wedding dress" to get married in Rhodes?

Yes that's what I mean I think I'd lose the money rather than be that hot. I know it sounds melodramatic but I know I'd just suffer through it rather than enjoy it. I'd be gutted but probably happier overall. Possibly in the minority though.

But if you were worried about it being hot you wouldn't book southern Europe in July or August in the first place, you would book in the Spring or Autumn when it is much less likely

Karrpt · 15/07/2023 23:40

The fucking dramas of cancelling a holiday you've saved and worked for because of some shite you've read on the internet.

It's hot, yes. What did you think would happen in July? 🤣

You could argue that the person who asked the question didn't ask about Asia or the rest of Africa or South America or the USA.

But I notice you didn't pick her up on that.

Yes - the world is changing.
Crop failure
Lack of water.
People moving because of land failure.

This thread though was about Europe - and yes, it probably is because it's much closer to home which no doubt says something.

Climate change though will not respect borders.

Swathes of the farmland in Spain are becoming unsustainable due to drought/ irrigation and are likely to become desert. The planet is fucked. Meanwhile we'll be likely to get cooler wetter summers. Climate change sucks but we were warned decades ago.

Hellokittymania · 15/07/2023 23:45

To the person who very recently commented saying they wish the sun could be sent to the UK, OK, please take it, but along with the sun, why not also take things like the wildfires and everything else that is going on or as a threat right now? I posted a thread a couple of days ago, and one things I had mentioned was that people who tolerate the sun on holiday, or in a completely different position than those of us who have to tolerate it without air-conditioning, every day, and go about our business. I live in Greece, on the fifth floor, with floor to ceiling windows, with no air-conditioning. My living room at 9 PM this evening was 39 Celsius. It’s hot, I’m sleeping on my kitchen floor next to the fan, not going out all day, try not to move as much as possible in the day, jumping in the bathtub to cool off, and etc. I am also visually impaired, yes, there are some centers in our area which have opened for people who have no air-conditioning at home and we really need to get in the cool air for at least a few hours a day, but they are not so easy for those of us who have mobility issues.

I have lived in other countries in the EU, including Italy, back in 2004 to 2006, when it was also rather hot, but I don’t remember heat like this. And it doesn’t cool down.
I came across the book on iBooks, because I’m listening to audiobooks to pass the time during the day, and there is something called the heat will kill you first, it might be an interesting and an eye-opening read.

Hellokittymania · 15/07/2023 23:49

Also, I might add that they have told bakeries, restaurants and other places where workers are near very hot ovens during the day that they can close from 12 noon to 5 PM if the temperature is over 40°. I went to the bakery very early in the morning the other day, around 6 AM, and I think it must’ve been already over 30°, it was very hot.

Justanotherlurker · 15/07/2023 23:50

In the mean time you will still want an upgrade on your phone/laptop even second hand, still expect a readily supply of goods to supply the charity shops for bargains and still want a holiday, and yet want the 'UK government to do more' whilst downplaying that our contribution even if we hit net zero has negligible impact onto the situation and ignoring places like China.

It is the 'currant' to be worried about, it is an easy virtue signal without having to address what you personally would have to give up

Bagpuss2022 · 15/07/2023 23:51

We fly to Turkey on the 25th looking crazy hot we went to Florida last summer and I think this summers trip is going to be hotter

whynotwhatknot · 15/07/2023 23:52

i didnt cope last year where we had 40 for like two days

id actually rearrange a holiday if i was going now

Is this in response to me? I'm not booked to go on holiday. It was just a throw away comment about what I'd do if I was due to go, as someone mentioned it up thread. If I was in that situation I would seriously consider not going in a heatwave like this. That's just me.

I'm not actually booked to go anywhere though. Not been abroad since 2018.

My hypothetical holiday dilemma isn't the point really though. It must just be awful for anyone enduring temps like that. Also as someone else said the crop failures and droughts, impact on wildlife etc are terrifying to think about. I've said it before the next big wars will be for water not oil. Probably not that far off.

earsup · 15/07/2023 23:54

we are in our place in Barcelona, its about 30c now...too hot and sticky to walk out for a drink, also near mountains as just outside the city, its humid, dont sleep, trying to retile the roof terrace and the adhesive is dry in minutes...dont even think about going into the centre as its jammed with tourists and even hotter...trains have air con but they push the hot air onto the platforms so its disgusting...!

freetheunicorn1 · 15/07/2023 23:57

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 15/07/2023 21:10

I live in southern Spain, where we regularly get 40+ in the summer. Usually it's a week or so and then drops back to 38 ish. Last year was terrible because it was 43+ for 20 consecutive days.
You can't do anything. You stay indoors all day with all the windows and blinds shut. The worst thing is night time. You cant sleep without aircon because it's still 30 degrees at like 3am

Do you think the temps have changed?

I used to live in Italy and every summer we had a spell of 40+. Can't remember headlines and warnings...

321user123 · 15/07/2023 23:59

Although I’m a bit disengaged from the news.. I don’t see this as overly shocking tbh.
I was born in Italy and lived there for the majority of my life temps of 40-43C are honestly normal between July and AUG, esp in coastal towns and cities and it gets hotter from Rome down.
Flip, you could go to the beach in OCT back 15yrs ago.

By normal I don’t mean daily for the whole summer but for a week or two around this time.

I don’t know why everyone is so surprised. My 1991 blue Peter green book which was written for 7-11 year olds explained this would happen if we kept consuming, but everyone did anyway.

Yup, we were being told this as kids in the 70s.

And yet still the helmets deny human induced climate change.

Yes. Because it's just an unproven theory.

@onefinemess Are you a scientist?

Sittingonasale · 16/07/2023 00:13

I was just about to book a holiday in Spain. Have lived in SE Asia and hot parts of Europe but not sure my kids would manage it.

Paphos is forecast for 35 C next week.
Bodrum is 40C
Rome is 40C
Athens is 41 C

We’re headed to Bodrum in a couple of weeks. Weather app yesterday said 39 at 9am. TBF we went in august last year too and it was the same temp then so not unusual!

Sittingonasale · 16/07/2023 00:15

I do remember being in southern Spain in the early 2000s though and it being over 40.

I am the poster that asked the question.
The original question was about the extreme heatwave that is currently affecting Europe. This heat is currently eminating from North Africa. Nowhere, in any discussiona about the temperatures in Europe, nowhere on any forum, nowhere in the press, nowhere in any conversation have I encountered a single comment or interest in the conditions the people and wildlife in North Africa are facing.
And frankly, no-one at all seems to have any interest or enquiry into the climatic, economic or environmental conditions of any other piece of this planet other than the tiny wet island they live on, or the miniscule square meterage they intend to spend their short little holiday on, somewhere on this dying planet of ours.

DontMowMyMeadow · 16/07/2023 00:23

@cakeorwine feel free to pick me up on your perceived lack of my perceived lack of interest on climate change beyond the borders of Europe and North Africa. Go back and read my posts.

user9630721458 · 16/07/2023 00:25

@DontMowMyMeadow Well said. Maybe that's why humans won't stop destroying themselves and the planet; most people can't see beyond their own little world.
