40C - 49C forecast for Europe next week - that is ridiculously hot

‘I’ve never seen heat this bad. It’s not normal’: Italy struggles as temperature tops 40C | Italy | The Guardian

It's scary to think of these temperatures - not at all good for the human body.

I hope people who are going abroad over summer are prepared - or at least aware of how to stay safe in such heat.

Feel so sorry for those that don't have air con. Anything over 23° is too hot for me and makes me feel utterly miserable - not to mention tired and sick. Thankfully our "heatwaves" in the UK don't last long but it is still absolutely horrendous for those that genuinely detest it. Those temperatures are truly awful, they have my full sympathies.

Hollyhead · 15/07/2023 23:01

I don’t know why everyone is so surprised. My 1991 blue Peter green book which was written for 7-11 year olds explained this would happen if we kept consuming, but everyone did anyway.

User1864876 · 15/07/2023 23:01

I bought an air con in last years heatwave for the bedroom, I wonder if I will need it this year...

cloudsintheceiling · 15/07/2023 23:03

I believe these heatwaves are linked with our cold and wet weather. I can't find the article I read now but basically southern Europe is stuck in high pressure systems and we're stuck on low.

In the UK, global warming may actually mean more rain, and colder winters. "Climate change" is definitely the most fitting term.

DontMowMyMeadow · 15/07/2023 23:05

You local anecdata may be soothing to you but it's just your insignificantly limited observation of your local weather tends in your incredibly short life in to date.

I am in Italy at the moment and it’s been 30 degrees today, going up to 34/35 next week. Hot but within expected norms.

When you check the forecast for next week across Italy - not the news reports - it’s similar across the country. We’re off to Malaga next week and similarly the predicted temps there range between 30-34.

There seems to be a gap between the normal weather forecast and the headlines which present a much more extreme picture.

I’ve noticed this too. We’re going to Sicily in a week and I’ve been trawling the weather forecasts, and none of them are reporting the temperatures that the news channels are, so I’m confused.

Today we had 18 degrees and rain. I wouldn’t mind warmer weather.

Yes

I know.

Currently in Gran Canaria (Maspalomas. Taxi this morning at 8.30am said 35°.

Locals saying it is expected to be hot at this time of year, but right now it is brutal

babbscrabbs · 15/07/2023 23:15

Parts of Greece this week are due to be in 40s, and not much below 30 at night. That's brutal.

Poolnoodlepoodle · 15/07/2023 23:15

After that short hot spell last year I'm genuinely grateful for every 'miserable' uk summer day. It was a pain today to put a puddle suit on dd in July yes. But give me that a thousand times over any sort of weather over 30 degrees let alone 40 degrees.

I really feel for the people living in those areas. I'm like the previous poster I wouldn't go on my holiday if the temps were that high.

Maddy70 · 15/07/2023 23:16

Also stop reading British press. I live in Spain yes it's hotter than normal but it's just that the summer has moved forward a week or so and we are having end of July temperatures now. Obviously I'm not disputing global warming but it's not as sensationalist as the mail is making out

Nat6999 · 15/07/2023 23:18

My friend's daughter has travelled to Rhodes to get married, the whole family have gone, I dread to think how she will cope in a heavy wedding dress in the heat & she has a toddler as well.

Kindofcrunchy · 15/07/2023 20:42

Jeez. Is the UK getting this weather at some point? I barely coped with the last heatwave!

No. We are staying cool for at least another couple of weeks. Something to do with a polar jet stream means we won't get any of the extreme heat in Europe. We may well get some hot days in August and possibly early September, but completely bearable and normal heat for the time of year. Nothing like last year or what's happening in southern Europe.

User1864876 · 15/07/2023 23:20

I have never been in the high summer to Greece or Spain or anywhere like that because it was always too hot, even years ago when I was younger, we always went in September or May because of this

But wouldn't you lose money if you didn't go on the holiday?

Completely agree about 'miserable' summer days after last summer.

Poolnoodlepoodle · 15/07/2023 23:24

Yes that's what I mean I think I'd lose the money rather than be that hot. I know it sounds melodramatic but I know I'd just suffer through it rather than enjoy it. I'd be gutted but probably happier overall. Possibly in the minority though.

hiding5675687 · 15/07/2023 23:27

I live in an area affected. The night time temperatures are also staying high, so combined with the very high day temperatures the ground is hotter than normal.

There has been a lack of rain, so some crops have failed recently. This is impacting much more than holiday makers.
