To find most Brits bemusingly obedient?

Most, not all!

But most would queue themselves into an early grave if a perceived (not even actual) authority figure ordered them to.

Why do they obey the "you must scan your receipt before exiting the self service area" rule in supermarkets? No you don't, Sainsbury's isn't going to hold you hostage in a castle dungeon until you comply.

Another thread on here about "requiring evidence" if your kid is sick so they're "allowed" to be off school? All these folk scrabbling about taking photos of thermometers oh I HOPE THE HEAD THINKS THIS IS ENOUGH 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭. Tell the head to feck right off.

Most rules can just be ignored and if enough people ignore the stupid ones they'll disappear. You're making it worse for everyone by going along with them.

That Mizzy chap is in the same category. People need to follow rules otherwise society breaks down. You can't pick and choose. I was against all the covid laws and not vaccinated against it but I still followed the rules.

You need to learn to do both though don't you. There are certain red lines you have to draw for your own principles, and accept that there may be consequences (water charges) And also get behind movements that you believe in where your movement might tip a balance. And yet again others where it's right and fair to pay taxes.

It's sad that the idea of thinking for yourself scares you.

It's sad that you think that is what has been said.
Most even half way to intelligent people can grasp that, as we live as part of society, rather than in isolation, then there are 'societal rules' so that things run smoothly. It doesn't mean people haven't thought for themselves, it means that people have thought about it, and realised it makes sense. To take your queuing fairly example - it makes sense that people get a turn in order of arrival (ie fairly) and everyone has the same wait. It does not make sense in a civilised society that there is some sort of free-for-all in most situations where the biggest / strongest / fittest get their turn and those whose elbows are less sharp get constantly pushed to the back. I have thought about it, and I know which sort of society I would rather live in.

If anyone ever asks for a 'Tell me you're white without telling me you're white' comment, story, opinion or whatever just show them this thread.

YY!! Society looks after it's most vulnerable, otherwise it's no longer a society. Most people, if they take a minute away from the hysteria of the press/ SM would be able to understand this. What if it was me? How would i feel to be demonised all of a sudden? People have short/selective memories imo.

Curseofthenation · 15/07/2023 17:16

I'm not obedient for the sake of being obedient. If my local Sainsbury's started asking me to scan my receipt as I left and it pissed me off then I'd vote with my feet and shop elsewhere.

In terms of queue jumping, I would never do it as it essentially means that I think my needs are more important than every other person in that queue. If someone jumped in front of me for a self service machine, then I'd follow them over to the same machine and start scanning my things too. I'm not afraid to be an awkward prick to a selfish arsehole. In fact, I'd enjoy pushing back and rebelling against an entitled person. It would be worth the time wasted. Best hope you don't queue jump in front of me OP 😂.

I would never queue jump tbf 🤣 i'd be morto. And i can't really walk so i wouldn't be any races! But there is a lot to be said for good manners anyway!

I don't think that a one woman protest against barriers is likely to make Sainsburys go ooh, someone doesn't agree, how terrible, well we'd better uninstall all these things we've just spent thousands of pounds on.

Confused

They would probably just think "Oh her again, what a nuisance she is" and joke about you between themselves, like every other mad customer. You do get some right characters in retail.

Meanwhile, everyone else will just scan the barcode because nobody gives a shit about a small and pointless rule like that enough to "make a stand" and oppose it, whether or not they think it makes sense. Massive companies like supermarkets don't just do any old random thing that pops into their head, they will have chosen this because it has a research and evidence base showing that it reduces shoplifting (or whatever other thing they want it to do).

You sound like you've been spending a lot of time on FB obsessing over how "mainstream" everyone is.

TrishM80 · 15/07/2023 17:25

Torven · 15/07/2023 14:45

Stepping over the barrier would work for most people. If mobility an issue, insist a staff member opens it. They can't refuse.

Making a scene by insisting a worker opens the barrier seems a lot of more of a pain in the arse than just scanning a receipt.

I'm all for non conformity against stupid and pointless rules, but not when it's contrived and a bit too "try hard"!

Yes I’m certainly not an Uber-obeyer but the whole “I DONT CONFORM TO THE RULES I DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY” show is, 99% of the time, actually pointless to me and hinders rather than helps.

People who shoplift are hungry. I don't feel any particular annoyance towards them. I do feel annoyance that Sainsbury's decided to respond to this by trying to waste my time and energy.

Top tip, bags ovwr the other side then step over (I'm five six and can do it) or sit on the barrier and spin your legs round. Little wave for the security guard as you go.

Generally people who shoplift are greedy or drug addicts.

LadyKenya · 15/07/2023 17:32

MCOut · 15/07/2023 16:53

Black woman here, call me paranoid but I always print my receipt just to be safe. I couldn’t even imagine being brazen enough to hop the barrier and then PURPOSELY bring it to the security guard’s attention 😂

@LadyKenya I’m actually dying that being obedient is a slur that warrants cries of racism. On Mumsnet… where persistent covert racism is dismissed. It’s funny, but it’s not funny.

I know@MCOut . I just roll my eyes at comments like that. How ridiculous to compare that to racismHmm

Posting from my hospital bed, let me tell you that the Rule Breaker in the next bed for the first two days was a PITA, not a rebel. And she was not from the UK

There is an actual MH condition associated with shoplifting ffs.

And why, exactly, does it matter if she was from the UK? Are you happy not to be treated by a medical professional bacause you're not from their country? People experience all sorts of hardships randomly, any time. When you were in your hospital bed, i'd bet my life many of those caring for you are foreign. I assume you didn't refuse treatment?

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 15/07/2023 17:49

No I don't think so. Queuing maybe but I think you'll find people in most countries don't just push to the front of an obvious queue unless they are rude AF. I think the amount of get togethers during lockdown shits on your theory to be honest.

Chickenkeev · 15/07/2023 17:52

Fairyliz · 15/07/2023 17:38

Well, compassion and treatment would be a start.

Davros · 15/07/2023 17:53

Chickenkeev the OP is characterising people from the UK a certain way so I'm just confirming her belief that people not from the UK don't follow rules.
Otherwise DFOD

Well thanks for the DFOD! But what i'm saying / what i think is that people can't just be shoved into a box that way! It's beyond simplistic where the UK has a such a rich mix of cultures. And tbh i think OP was being somewhat disingenuous with that comment if i'm being honest.

Davros · 15/07/2023 18:03

Chickenkeev · 15/07/2023 18:03

You stuck your beak in, i apologised if the person felt i was rude. So stick your beak out again.

Davros · 15/07/2023 18:06

Funnily enough, the person I referred to was Russian
