To find most Brits bemusingly obedient?

Most, not all!

But most would queue themselves into an early grave if a perceived (not even actual) authority figure ordered them to.

Why do they obey the "you must scan your receipt before exiting the self service area" rule in supermarkets? No you don't, Sainsbury's isn't going to hold you hostage in a castle dungeon until you comply.

Another thread on here about "requiring evidence" if your kid is sick so they're "allowed" to be off school? All these folk scrabbling about taking photos of thermometers oh I HOPE THE HEAD THINKS THIS IS ENOUGH 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭. Tell the head to feck right off.

Most rules can just be ignored and if enough people ignore the stupid ones they'll disappear. You're making it worse for everyone by going along with them.

I agree 100% ! I have no idea why there is so much apathy and aqueiscing to those in power who are morally corrupt, make silly rules up and generally get away with such horrendous things themselves. Mind boggling.

There is a school of thought that it's a civic duty to disobey a bad law.

FreeRider · 15/07/2023 16:36

In Australia, since at least 1993 (so 30 years ago) your bags are physically checked before you go in the Supermarket, and when you leave...also can happen in quite a few regular shops, as well.

I was a bit taken aback when it first happened - I'd spent the previous decade in the UK - but my mother was surprised when I said so. She didn't see the problem, and I never saw anyone going in/out objecting to it, either.

Australia also had far harder rules/laws re Covid.

theGooHasGone · 15/07/2023 16:37

There are rude cunts and people who think the rules don't apply to them in every country, not just the UK.

I agree, but the barriers aren't neccessarily law though? So theoretically, can you be arrested for jumping the barrier? Probably not? But if you do so in an escape to escape paying for goods and services provided, most likely yes.

VeridicalVagabond · 15/07/2023 16:38

Well OP the simple solution I think would be for you to fuck off and live somewhere where there is less societal obedience, instead of making edgelord posts on Mumsnet of all fucking places letting everyone know what a brave and rebellious Anarchist you are for not scanning your Sainsbury's receipt or queueing for your Starbucks like all the other sheeple.

A true modern punk. I bet you accelerate towards amber lights too instead of breaking.

Chickenkeev · 15/07/2023 16:38

WhatADrabCarpet · 15/07/2023 16:42

Both of my nearest Sainsburys have the barriers to scan the barcode on the receipt to open them.

It's to stop people from just walking through with a full trolley then exiting.
Alas I've seen it countless times.

It's a pain in the arse as , invariably we've had to wait for a member of staff to open the barrier as it either doesn't work or the person in front of you hasn't asked for a receipt.

Why did I just think "Rik ?" ?

OneTC · 15/07/2023 16:47

Quite the opposite really. There is a very healthy amount of civil disobedience in Britain. There's protests that don't routinely become riots, there's illegal raves in the face of stiff opposition. There's subversive literature and publications. Oh and there's a new thing called not scanning your barcode that will no doubt set the world on 🔥

But British people, and most other places I've been, people do follow the rules on the most part because it's how society works.

labamba007 · 15/07/2023 16:50

I still remember people saying you shouldn't buy Easter Eggs in the supermarket during Covid because it's not an essential item. Wine is fine though. I do think people in this country love to ram a good rule down your throat 🤷‍♀️ but have no idea how this compares to elsewhere.

Tbf wine would have been allowed because 'everyone' was partying ;)

If I did this as a brown woman, people would say ' well that's what happens when you let all the immigrants in"😁I will just scan the receipt.

Black woman here, call me paranoid but I always print my receipt just to be safe. I couldn’t even imagine being brazen enough to hop the barrier and then PURPOSELY bring it to the security guard’s attention 😂

@LadyKenya I’m actually dying that being obedient is a slur that warrants cries of racism. On Mumsnet… where persistent covert racism is dismissed. It’s funny, but it’s not funny.

PriOn1 · 15/07/2023 16:53

Given that the scanning barriers have been in Norway ever since self-scanning was widely introduced, I should imagine it’s now being introduced to the UK as it has been shown to reduce shoplifting.

Personally I found it inconvenient when barriers were put up stopping you from walking out through non-manned tills as it meant that if you went in and didn’t buy anything, you had to squeeze past the manned till and queue.

Equally many shops now have barriers when you go in. Presumably all these barriers make it easier for the staff to see shoplifters, now that there are fewer of them in the shops.

Self-scanning was widely introduced in the UK before Norway and the “unexpected item in the bagging area” fiasco made it close to unusable or at least eye-rollingly frustrating. Some shops still use that system. Norway never introduced that, but went straight to barriers instead. I know which I prefer.

So really OP, what you need to do is to call the staff and complain, every time the machine tells you there’s an unexpected item in the bagging area, or when it refuses to scan your next item as it expected something in the bagging area that never arrived. Now that is a petty rule, enforced by a machine that’s been programmed to control how you pack your bags. Clearly your priorities are skewed.

Hasn’t asked for a receipt? Are you telling me the receipt doesn’t print out automatically? Or did they just forget to take it? Please tell me it’s the latter as otherwise, the system is insane.

That Mizzy chap is in the same category. People need to follow rules otherwise society breaks down. You can't pick and choose. I was against all the covid laws and not vaccinated against it but I still followed the rules.

wholivesondrurylane · 15/07/2023 16:58

This entire thread because the OP can't be arsed to show her receipt.🙄

Reminds me of the people who write "k" instead of "ok". What would you do with all that spare time you just gained?

SerendipityJane · 15/07/2023 16:59

Are you telling me the receipt doesn’t print out automatically?

Quite a few self service tills only print a receipt on request. How else would you highlight the total and utter uselessness of environmental protection ?

We use a couple of different stores. The one with the a barrier prints automatically

The one without barriers asks if you want it
