To find most Brits bemusingly obedient?

Most, not all!

But most would queue themselves into an early grave if a perceived (not even actual) authority figure ordered them to.

Why do they obey the "you must scan your receipt before exiting the self service area" rule in supermarkets? No you don't, Sainsbury's isn't going to hold you hostage in a castle dungeon until you comply.

Another thread on here about "requiring evidence" if your kid is sick so they're "allowed" to be off school? All these folk scrabbling about taking photos of thermometers oh I HOPE THE HEAD THINKS THIS IS ENOUGH 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭. Tell the head to feck right off.

Most rules can just be ignored and if enough people ignore the stupid ones they'll disappear. You're making it worse for everyone by going along with them.

Oh wow OP. I wouldn't like to work with/live near you. With your blatant disregard for societal rules, I simply couldn't trust you.

Rules followers are the dangerous ones. They (you) are the people who allow really vile cultures to take hold. It's a cliché but true - could the nazi genocide have happened if Germans didn't accept rules without much question?

I moved abroad some years ago and would give my left arm for an orderly queue and a bit of respect.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 15/07/2023 14:54

Nobody is 'stepping over' the barrier in Sainsbury's, unless you are John Cleese doing the Ministry of Silly Walks sketch, or you are 7' tall.

And although I am the softest, most easily trampled on doormat around I hate queue jumpers so much that I have no problem yelling 'Oy, back of the line is there' at them together with a death stare that can make a seasoned maintenance mechanic go 'Ooh' and jump back three feet.

BananaPalm · 15/07/2023 14:54

Wow... just wow... 🤦🏻‍♀️

ichundich · 15/07/2023 14:55

I don't think these are typical examples. But the British do have a tendency to just grumble and get on with things rather than kick up a big stink. As shown by phrases like "I am disappointed", "I'm not happy" for "I am totally pissed off!"

Haha yes but a sensible person would just blink at you and ignore you. What are you going to do? You'll still be waiting to scan your receipt by the time they've left the shop 😀

Do you live in England? If so maybe consider emigrating.

Chickenkeev · 15/07/2023 14:56

Regarding schools, non engagement by parents and frequent unexplained absences is a red flag for child neglect. So these rules are beneficial imo.

Seems you are quite happy to follow Godwin’s law though.

SherbetDips · 15/07/2023 14:56

I think it’s more Brits have manners…nothing wrong with having manners. Feel free to go live elsewhere.

I know, I hated myself a bit for doing it but it IS true.

I think we are quite compliant

look at the rules/guidance how they differed over Europe they have to work with the culture of the country

I think it comes down to not liking to make a fuss and a bordering on obsession of not liking to create a fuss or appear as though we are

Agree. I also think brexit happened in part because of this. Other countries interpret EU rules a lot less self defeatingly and slavishly than the UK did.

I don't really agree, I'd say people were less obedient now. No idea what this self scan exit thing is though, never seen one!

DemonicCaveMaggot · 15/07/2023 14:59

Yes, the person jumping the queue will ignore me, but my squeals of protest alerts the cashier who will refuse them service and send them to the back of the queue while everyone sneers at their stupidity.

They won't get out of the barriers because they are too short to step over them. This is the UK, not Denmark. I suppose they could limbo under them though, that would be worth letting them cut in front to watch that display.

missmollygreen · 15/07/2023 15:00

Just waiting for the OP to say "sheeple" and I have got BINGO!

Spendonsend · 15/07/2023 15:00

My mum hit 70, decided she was invisible and that most rules didnt apply to her so does whatever she likes now.
Shes a kind, loving person, so theres nothing dangerous or harmful or disrespectful. Just all those small things nobody has really thought about. She just ignores.

Linnet · 15/07/2023 15:00

What shop has a barrier that you have to scan your receipt to get out off? I’ve never seen one of these. Usually you are asked on the self service machines if you want a receipt, how do you get out if you say no?

I'm not sure if you've noticed but it's self service now. And your squeals sound incredibly annoying.

I’ve only had to scan my receipt to leave a supermarket in France.
Are the French bemusingly obedient too?

gogomoto · 15/07/2023 15:01

@Linnet

I've never seen one either, I always refuse a receipt too

BeverlyHa · 15/07/2023 15:01

what nonsense you are talking about? a brainless rant of a lazy twat who is against our ordered country?!

And, on the barriers, you can absolutely shove through them. But people don't like to make a fuss 🤣

DemonicCaveMaggot · 15/07/2023 15:01

gogomoto some shops like Sainsburys have installed a barrier out the exit of the self scan areas so people have to scan a bar code on the bottom of their receipts to get out. It is to help prevent shoplifting. Unfortunately if you don't know and try to leave without taking your receipt or if they give you the option to not have a receipt and you aren't issued with one, then you are a bit stuck.
