To find most Brits bemusingly obedient?

Torven · 15/07/2023 14:24

Most, not all!

But most would queue themselves into an early grave if a perceived (not even actual) authority figure ordered them to.

Why do they obey the "you must scan your receipt before exiting the self service area" rule in supermarkets? No you don't, Sainsbury's isn't going to hold you hostage in a castle dungeon until you comply.

Another thread on here about "requiring evidence" if your kid is sick so they're "allowed" to be off school? All these folk scrabbling about taking photos of thermometers oh I HOPE THE HEAD THINKS THIS IS ENOUGH 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭. Tell the head to feck right off.

Most rules can just be ignored and if enough people ignore the stupid ones they'll disappear. You're making it worse for everyone by going along with them.

Isn't there usually a barrier thing when you have to scan the receipt? So if you didn't scan it then what are you going to do, slither under it or force it open (probably triggering an alarm)? I've never seen a receipt scan without the barrier.

I think British people don't like to cause a fuss, rather than liking to be obedient. Plenty of people ignore whatever they like when it suits them if nobody will notice.

Manners maketh man

BertieBotts · 15/07/2023 14:41

And queueing isn't really obedience, it's about notions of fairness. This is very cultural, it's interesting to see how people behave in other places and observe how angry it makes me, even though the other culture's system is often just as efficient!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 15/07/2023 14:43

Where do you come from OP? Does peace and harmony reign amongst the disregard for ‘rules’ and courtesy?

Callyem · 15/07/2023 14:45

The evidence of illness one can impact whether you are fined for persistent absenteeism, queuing is blimmin fair and the receipt scanning - pointless as it is - would require forcing through a barrier.

Stepping over the barrier would work for most people. If mobility an issue, insist a staff member opens it. They can't refuse.

No I don’t agree at all. We lived in Australia for a while and I couldn’t believe how many rules there were there and how willing people were to follow them. I’d always think British people would never obey this sign!

Needmorelego · 15/07/2023 14:47

I think the opposite.
Brits seem physically unable to follow simple rules such as things like -
recycling
fly tipping
stopping at zebra crossings
not using phones in cinemas
smoking in bus stations
picking up their dog shit
riding those illegal electric scooters
parking in the correct place
cycling in the correct places
cyclists stopping for pedestrians/red lights
etc etc…..
People couldn’t even do lockdown and masks correctly. People always think the rules don’t apply to them.

Torven · 15/07/2023 14:47

Queuing isn't necessarily fair - first person there isn't necessarily most deserving. I do tend to queue but I think slavish obedience to rules (agree, the urge to "not make a fuss"), is ridiculous.

Dillydollydingdong · 15/07/2023 14:47

I've always thought rules are silly. Not all of them, just a lot of them. All those stupid pandemic rules - you can't go out, only 2 people together outside, you can't travel more than a certain distance. And in the meantime the country's economy ground to a halt! What rubbish!

MaximusPaddimous · 15/07/2023 14:48

My parents lived in a country for a decade where most people ignored the rules. The result is bribery and chaos. Houses only got built of palms were greased, health and safety was non-existent.

Torven · 15/07/2023 14:48

And you are DEFINITELY not getting fined for having a sick kid (find it unbelievable that English people tolerate this system like you're unpaid servants to your kid's head teacher).

I've never seen one of these receipt scanners, but surely getting staff to open it would take longer. I'm not sure what the point would be. Seems to just be objecting for the sake of it

(I'm also not sure the point of the scanner though - surely if you've gone through the self scan and put something in your bag without paying, this system does absolutely nothing to prevent that anyway. All it does is stop someone walking through without buying anything.)

If you think the UK isn't corrupt I have some bad news for you...

I’ve has very hard time you’ve lived anywhere else @Torven if you consider Brits obedient.

Obviously you may have but I’d love to know where!!

Objecting until the shop realises they don't work and removes them. This is exactly what I mean. You'll obey despite the hassle (and rude insinuation that you're a thief) instead of saying no.

OP posts:
MaximusPaddimous · 15/07/2023 14:50

I didn’t say that OP. The bribery in that country was overt unlike here.

AgnesX · 15/07/2023 14:50

Probably the majority of people intrinsically realise that rules and guidelines, and with relation to your examples, honesty, make life easier and a nicer to place to be

There are plenty who don't though.

LlynTegid · 15/07/2023 14:50

Not when behind the wheel especially, or when leader of the Conservative Party.

gamerchick · 15/07/2023 14:51

Another slag the English off thread?

Tbh OP, you sound like you've been foiled shoplifting. Go to a shop without barriers.

Totally @Dillydollydingdong , covid rules were a perfect example. Everyone diligently "popping on their mask" to take a pee but it's safe to take them off back at the table.

Where are you from OP?
And did a group of you draw lots for who got today's 'anti-British' thread? There's been a real spate of these racist threads.

TheInterceptor · 15/07/2023 14:51

Why are you putting up with living in such a hell hole filled with mindless automatons, OP?

BananaPalm · 15/07/2023 14:52

Oh wow OP. I wouldn't like to work with/live near you. With your blatant disregard for societal rules, I simply couldn't trust you.

User135644 · 15/07/2023 14:52

They must be as they vote Tory (at least in England).
