To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

1989 is my favourite album! Not a popular choice though lol

Im no fan of Taylor but comparing her with Lizzo who is like a joke Kareoke artist is pretty terrible.

what makes Lizzo a joke? I'm not hugely knowledgeable of her music but she released some very catchy tunes, puts on a good show, plays the flute!

Comparing her to a joke karaoke artist seems...odd.

Jigslaw · 17/07/2023 14:56

Lizzo is brilliant live, the energy is unmatched. I don't see why women always have to pitted against eachother, both are talented and successful.

yanak8 · 17/07/2023 14:56

I don't know any of her songs. Just wondered why there had been so many mentions on Mumsnet recently.

It’s also a bit like comparing apples and oranges, completely different style of music and Lizzo is only 4 albums in and only really been mainstream a few years.

Literally all they have in common is that they’re women in music...

@yanak8 because she’s touring and they’ve had to do weird things with ticket sales to make sure it wasn’t chaos.

I think I would be put off by a lot of teens at a concert waving their phones about.

Who do you think concerts are for. I was 15 the first time I saw Queen.

beguilingeyes · 17/07/2023 16:49

I'm a fairly recent fan. It was this video that made me fall in love with her a bit. She's so sweet in it and Shaun Dooley is so gobamacked. Also...she's a giant!

The misogyny towards women musicians is real. I'm a huge Judie Tzuke fan (80s, genius songwriter) and the savagery of the (male) music critics towards her was horrible. Almost all personal comments about her appearance.
And why are female singers always compares to each other like it's a competition.

You said you would be put off by teens at a concert. Phone waving at gigs isn't only by teens, its an epidemic.

The co-songwriting credit thing doesn't necessarily mean a collaboration.
A friend of mine had a song covered by a very famous DJ. He wanted 60% of the publishing! I don't think he got that much but he's now listed as one of the songwriters.
I've heard that Simon Cowell insists on a publishing credit on things that he works on because that's where the money is.

There are loads of people who have songwriters who basically write them songs but get credit for adding a word or similar amounts.

Jennifer Lopez has writing credits on songs it’s rumoured she didn’t even sing on never mind write.

So it’s not that writing credits mean everyone listed really wrote a song, but Taylor does write her songs and everyone who’s worked with her says she does... but is constantly accused of lying about it.

namitynamechange · 17/07/2023 18:31

Taylor swift is extremely popular and very good live so of course there's interest in tickets

But also, i think this is a feature of everyone being post covid and very keen to see live music again/appreciative of the opportunity. You see it with other musicians-beyonce, Springsteen, etc

She is the sole writer on many of her songs and makes a major contribution to those she co writes as stated by her cowriters who strongly defended her when Damon Albarn tried to discredit her by saying pretty much what you just said.

Taylor Swift criticises Damon Albarn for saying she doesn’t write her own songs

The Blur and Gorillaz frontman apologised to Swift, claiming that a ‘conversation about songwriting’ in the LA Times was ‘reduced to clickbait’

I don't think she needs anyone to market for her!!

If they were marketing fir her, they’re a bit late.. you had to pre-register 3 weeks ago to be even in with a chance to try and buy tickets in the general sale.

and it looks like most of the tickets went on the album pre-sales last week anyway.

I wasn't implying that she doesn't. Quite the opposite. I meant that just because various randoms have a credit, it doesn't mean they actually contributed anything. I think she's fantastic.

Are they marketing in France too? They had to shut the Paris queue down when it collapsed with a million people in it.

My DD and her BFF love her and have tickets for 2 venues and are so excited
Am so pleased for them
They ,like all their cohort, have missed so much

Well, hello thread on Taylor Swift. I'm looking for this.
I'm old. (I mean that.) I'd never knowingly heard a TS song until....yesterday! For some reason I just decided it was time I tried her out. So I went along to Youtube and tried one (sorry can't remember which one!) and I LOVE HER INSTANTLY. Now I've listened/watched five and loved three two meh.
So any advice on how to proceed from here would be amazing.
What MUST I listen to? I haven't RTFT yet, I'm only just through the first 100 posts. Just thought I'd ask!
Also she's really gorgeous to watch, very sassy and interesting. And yes great words. Impressed with her intelligence. God I might go all fangirl. Grin
Big fan of Joni Mitchell, back in the day.

You must listen to folklore and evermore. Both amazing

heldinadream · 17/07/2023 20:15

@loverofbono (ha ha - me too - unless you're being ironic!) thank you for this, I'll definitely listen to them. I'm quite excited by her. Such a lovely feeling and I wasn't expecting it at all, for some reason I thought I would be immune to whatever charms she might have. But I'm not. I think she's quite something.

I have listened to those two albums on repeat since they came out, every song is amazing. There are three on Folklore that are linked, August, Betty and Cardigan. The same story all told from a different person's perspective, so the girlfriend, boyfriend and the other woman. Unreal

TheaBrandt · 17/07/2023 20:36

I have gone back to Lover. Enjoying Cornelia Street, The Archer and Miss Americana and The Man

Pugfin · 01/10/2023 21:00

I really adore her music and feel really lucky to have tickets for next year, but damn she's taking the whole media oversaturation to emulate her 1989 era far too serious! Sick of hearing about her- all over social media, adverts and even the news lol!
