To think DH is wrong about how you make a brew

... or maybe I'm weird!

I always maintain you put the bag in, then the water, then the milk and then you get the tea to your desired strength before removing the tea bag. DH just made a fuss about this saying I do it the wrong way. But surely leaving the bag in is sensible insurance against an unfortunate slip and putting too much milk in! Have I been badly taught?

OP posts:

Bag cannot be removed until the milk is added and the bag is wiggled around to ensure the tea is the right colour. Anything else is wrong

Sto123 · 16/07/2023 08:25

That’s grounds for divorce! 😃

Fairislefandango · 16/07/2023 08:41

Honestly!!!! Milk (blue obvs) then tea bag (clipper or Earl grey - I have standards) then boiling water, sit for 3 minutes and lift out.

What on earth is the point of specifying boiling water when you are suggesting adding it to a cup with milk already in it, which will immediately cool the water down? Confused Also Clipper is a brand and Earl Grey a type of tea blend. Not sure either is proof of standards Grin.

Anyway... preferably loose leaf in a pot, obvs. Next best: loose leaf in a cup with one of those individual mesh thingies. If using a bag: bag in cup, add freshly boiling water and leave to brew for the right amount of time depending on tea type. Add milk if appropriate.

Notimeforaname · 16/07/2023 08:59

You don't drink Earl Grey with milk, anyone knows that.

I have but thats usually when I'm desperate and cant get any Barry's tea.

OP I take the teabag out before milk since the milk stops it brewing.

TheLostNights · 16/07/2023 09:14

Teabag in first, pour hot water over, bit of milk, few squeezes of the bag, then done. I find tea making so tedious but I drink about 8 a day and DH always wants a cup too.

Fairislefandango · 16/07/2023 09:15

The worst cup of tea I ever had was a lukewarm - I don't believe the kettle involved, if there was one, actually boiled - pallid brew with both milk and lemon in it.

<faints>

ApolloandDaphne · 16/07/2023 09:18

This thread is the reason I don't make tea for people. I am Earl grey tea bag in cup, add boiling water, swirl three times and remove bag. Job done. No milk or sugar involved. If you want those then you can make your own tea!

northernbeee · 16/07/2023 09:25

The teabag should never, ever, come into contact with milk.

Willmafrockfit · 16/07/2023 09:26

oh no i hate to take the teabag out before adding the milk

Willmafrockfit · 16/07/2023 09:27

sometimes i leave the tea bag in and drink it still brewing

BlueThursday · 16/07/2023 09:29

YABU for having milk in tea 🤢

Lastnightschips · 16/07/2023 09:34

The only acceptable way - pour in boiling water, waft the bag in, straight back out without squeezing, no milk.

Anything else - other than loose leaf in a glass pot to gauge strength - is rank and gives me hideous indigestion. And as for milk 🤢

And no, no one ever wants to make tea for me 😁

Fairislefandango · 16/07/2023 09:46

I'm a bit of a tea snob, but I do admit to liking Earl Grey with milk. I find a lot of black teas a bit too astringent without it, unless I brew them very weak, which I don't really like. And Earl Grey has extra astringency because of its cirltrussiness. The exception is Lapsang Souchong, which I wouldn't drink with milk - ugh! I do drink other no-milk teas though, like green tea, white tea and oolong teas.

Greenfree · 16/07/2023 09:48

I always put the milk and sugar in after taking the teabag out.

Hankunamatata · 16/07/2023 09:54

Oow interesting. Dh flipped at me for adding milk with tea bag still in the cup then taking tea bag out.
He is very much teabag out then add milk

We used to joke with my granny that she like the tea bag waved over the top of the mug

CecilyP · 16/07/2023 09:56

I do it the same as you. My DH sometimes puts the milk in first and I hate that. The flavour of the tea doesn’t really come out with the milk.

Thats just plain wrong because tea needs to be made with boiling water. If there’s already cold milk in the cup the Easter will be instantly off the boil.

This

My dm puts milk in first and it's basically tea flavoured milk she makes. Honestly the white colour of the mug is darker than the actual tea sometimes

Qilin · 16/07/2023 10:19

I'm assuming this putting milk in first like their tea while white looking, and not very strong at all.

Milk in first is definitely not the Yorkshire way :)

Does anyone else ever make a proper pot of tea with leaves?

Yes me. I have 2 pots. One with leaves for regular tea. I have another pot with bags for decaf as I really drink too much tea and need decaf on an evening! 🤦‍♀️. And my teapot in rarely cold if I’m home all day. Preference to Yorkshire tea leaves. Can be persuaded to ringtone regular tea bags though.

BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 16/07/2023 10:42

Teabag in mug, boiling water. Wait until you can stand the spoon up. Add a drop of milk. Pour down the sink. Open a bottle of wine
There, fixed it for you 😂

LlynTegid · 16/07/2023 11:18

This seems like the great divide in society.

Most traditionally non milk ones are really nice with oat milk. But normal tea is proper blue milk only, or Carnation if you want to pretend you're on an expedition

I drink jasmine at home with oat milk, and matcha iri genmaicha. I just make them much stronger than normal and brew then much longer before adding the oat milk. I tried them all with normal milk but there's a slight sweetness to the oat milk that makes it really nice.

I was initially kinda horrified with myself when I first started doing it 😅
