To think DH is wrong about how you make a brew

... or maybe I'm weird!

I always maintain you put the bag in, then the water, then the milk and then you get the tea to your desired strength before removing the tea bag. DH just made a fuss about this saying I do it the wrong way. But surely leaving the bag in is sensible insurance against an unfortunate slip and putting too much milk in! Have I been badly taught?

YABU. How much milk you add affects the milkiness, not the strength.

If in a mug/cup, it is teabag, boiling water, remove bag when desired strength is achieved, add milk to taste, precisely as Dame Maggie advises.

Earl Grey is served black or with lemon.

Milk first in the cup is for pouring tea from the teapot.

(Leaving the teabag in is sheer barbarism.)

Tea bag in china mug or cup, boiling hot water poured directly onto teabag until it’s the appropriate colour, add milk. Stir, remove teabag et voila, the perfect cuppa (for me)

Tea with milk in first is an abomination and I can tell after one sip if it’s been made this way 🤮 … You might as well drink tea flavoured milk 🤢 plus it’s never enough

DanceMumTaxi · 14/07/2023 15:51

Yea bag out before adding milk so I’m with your dh. My mum does it your way though.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/07/2023 15:51

Bag. Water. Remove bag at desired strength. Add milk.

I can't for the life of me understand putting the milk in first. You can't judge the strength properly.

randomchap · 14/07/2023 15:39

As long as you're not serving it with the bag still in then it's OK. One of my former colleagues would leave the bag in and drink it.

Was that me ☺️I always leave my teabag in !

Loveys · 14/07/2023 15:54

See it says can be drunk with or without milk. I have tried without but it's a bit harsh for me!

Loveys · 14/07/2023 15:56

I don't think anyone's complained about my tea 🤔. now I'm worried I just have VERY polite friends and relatives 😂

ClemmyTine · 14/07/2023 15:59

I leave the teabag in whilst drinking it.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 14/07/2023 15:59

It tastes different if the tea is infused with milk in. If you are used to it that way and happy with it then carry on but it is wrong :)

ShowOfHands · 14/07/2023 16:03

I am the most laid-back person about most things but get irrationally cross about people insisting their way is the only way with steak/tea/scones etc. DH and I fell out about it really badly once because he refused to cook my steak how I like it. I think it's beyond fucking arrogant to tell other people how they should have their own food or drink.

Apparently - and I don't know why - it's become my hill to die on.

NEmama · 14/07/2023 16:06

Absolutely disgusting. Never allow milk to meet the tea bag.
It does change the taste.
As pp said you have to use boiling water.
If you were meant to do that you'd put milk in the teapot too FFS.

CatStankShame · 14/07/2023 16:06

No amount of extra teabag squeezes can counteract too much milk. Too much milk is an irreversible error and can only be solved by making a fresh brew.

Bag in.
Water in.
Leave to soak.
Quick squeeze and bag out.
Milk splashed in - decant milk to a little just to make errors reduce.

HeritageBlooms · 14/07/2023 16:06

You’re all wrong! It’s a slice of lemon with tea! 😀

HeritageBlooms · 14/07/2023 16:07

No milk

A more polite version of my reply

I leave the teabag in whilst drinking it.

That's rank

Fromage · 14/07/2023 16:11

I love this thread.

I love how passionate British and Irish people are about how to properly make tea.

I nearly started an international incident on faceache with a throwaway remark on how we feel when (some) Americans make what they think is a cup of tea, but which we know to be an Abomination.

Fromage · 14/07/2023 16:12

Does anyone else ever make a proper pot of tea with leaves?

LolaSmiles · 14/07/2023 16:13

Milkiness and strength are different.

An under-brewed cup of tea is going to taste and look like dishwasher with the tiniest splash of milk. Nothing can save it.

Brew it first and then add milk.

If it's slightly overbrewed then tip some out and add boiling water before adding milk

Dacadactyl · 14/07/2023 16:14

Oh God no. Its water on teabag and then take teabag out before the milk goes in.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/07/2023 16:14

At least you aren't heating the water in the microwave with the teabag in.

I'm allergic to tea but the mere thought is enough to send shivers through my body.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 14/07/2023 15:20

I take the teabag out before adding the milk

Me too

DrCoconut · 14/07/2023 16:19

My grandma used to make tea in a pot with loose tea. She'd then put milk in the cups and pour in the tea through a little strainer. Then add sugar as requested. Other than that it's never milk first 😱

Kilopascal · 14/07/2023 16:20

Teapot all the way. I don’t like the harshness of mug-brewed tea.
