To think DH is wrong about how you make a brew

... or maybe I'm weird!

I always maintain you put the bag in, then the water, then the milk and then you get the tea to your desired strength before removing the tea bag. DH just made a fuss about this saying I do it the wrong way. But surely leaving the bag in is sensible insurance against an unfortunate slip and putting too much milk in! Have I been badly taught?

🤗

You barbarian 😂

Zanatdy · 14/07/2023 17:39

I do it same as you

DanaScully53 · 14/07/2023 17:47

Guess I'll be slated too but I don't like "stewed" tea so it's milk first, swish the teabag round 3 times then out it comes. If I make a pot the water gets poured in and I pour mine straight away. And it's got to be VERY milky. What am I like 😄

Yes, we have Yorkshire Tea leaves and a big ore-heated teapot.

I do. Warm the pot, one caddy spoon of tea leaves (I use Miles' tea), boiling water, leave about a minute.
Whole milk in cup - not semi-skimmed. I don't bother to strain it, but I never drink down to the bottom of the cup.
Tastes much better than tea- bag tea. I can feel virtuous too, LOL, since tea bags are bad for the environment and also use much more energy in packaging and transport per kg of tea.

LidlOrAldi · 14/07/2023 17:49

Tea is brewed in a pot!!!!

CloverHilla · 14/07/2023 17:50

DrCoconut · 14/07/2023 16:19

My grandma used to make tea in a pot with loose tea. She'd then put milk in the cups and pour in the tea through a little strainer. Then add sugar as requested. Other than that it's never milk first 😱

This was how my grandad made tea too, in the days before teabags were popular. Brew the tea in the scalded pot, then milk in cup first. The reason I believe was to keep the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup. With teabags it's a moot point, so milk in last!

PurpleNebula84 · 14/07/2023 17:57

History lesson - You only put milk in first if you are pouring from a tea pot... And the milk goes into the cup, the you pour your (un-milked) tea into the cup. The reason for doing this was so you could see how strong the tea was. Tea was expensive - milk not as much. When your tea went a suitable/acceptable colour (cos the milk was in it) you stopped pouring.
Putting milk on your tea bag in a cup/mug in modern times before you pour the water is just pretty rancid... To brew tea, you need above 90 degrees... Your tea will not brew properly with cold milk on it.

Hibiscrubbed · 14/07/2023 18:30

Only complete heathens add mild while the bag is in. Jesus. You people.

Teapot all the way. I don’t like the harshness of mug-brewed tea.

That is definitely preferable, I've just become lazy over it and don't often bother but I did have to buy a teapot as a student because I knew then what the right way was.

ThePenIsBlue · 14/07/2023 18:44

I just cannot abide these threads, as I just keep screaming how on earth can you make a thread thinking you’re correct and superior when you make tea with a teabag which is quite frankly bloody disgusting and wrong! 🤣
the only way for a decent and proper cup of tea is tea leaves, in a pot, brewed for 5 mins or so, then a mug with milk already in it, tea poured in from the pot.

how anyone can argue about the best way to make tea with a teabag when it’s already substandard to tea leaves…. 🙄 (however, with a tea bag, yes you make the tea, remove bag then add the milk) 😁😁😁😁

AppleCinnamonBagel · 14/07/2023 18:48

Fromage · 14/07/2023 16:12

Does anyone else ever make a proper pot of tea with leaves?

I was wondering when the civilised among us would arrive! 🤣

Tea, in a pot and poured into a cup. Milk first if it's a bone China cup else the cup could crack. Otherwise tea first then milk or lemon, to taste.

Bearpawk · 14/07/2023 18:59

Milk in with the tea bag will affect the temperature so stop it brewing properly. It's gross.

I used to work for an artisan tea company and they'd be horrified at your method op!

thelongroad · 14/07/2023 19:12

I prefer when it's made in a pot, but either way I'll always put milk in first, anything else feels weird.
And I very much prefer teabags to loose tea.
AND if my tea has gone cold, I will put the mug (always mug, cannot abide those stupid bone China cups) in to the microwave to reheat it and I actually think that's the best tasting tea of all! Was discussing this with my sister a while ago and she admitted she did that too and agreed it tasted better!! Grin

@Kilopascal

Do you use tea bags or tea leaves?

im trying to re-find my love of tea. First step, find a tea pot I love.

then I need to decide on which leaves to buy.

Phos · 14/07/2023 19:48

I make tea in a pot quite bit but never add milk first to that like people say… how do you know if you’ve put too much in!

Findyourneutralspace · 14/07/2023 19:50

I do it your way. And milk before water is all manner of wrong.

If you’ve put too much milk in, you swig a bit and top up with more tea from the bountiful potful you’ve just made.

Actually, I do that anyway.

FFS usually teabags, occasionally leaves. My sister used to work in Whittards so we have accumulated rather a lot of teapots and tealeaf-holding devices.

Blueuggboots · 14/07/2023 21:09

Apparently I'm not a scientist the molecules in milk mean that the tea doesn't stew properly once it's in. You should put the milk in once the tea is at the correct strength.

ClemmyTine · 14/07/2023 21:22

GalileoHumpkins · 14/07/2023 17:32

If you leave the teabag in doesn't it slip out and slap you in the face while you're drinking?

Only if you top the cup right up to get the dregs.

tkwal · 14/07/2023 21:24

It should only be called a "brew" if made in a teapot...pre warmed, emptied, teabag in recently boiled water in, leave to brew over a low heat until it reaches the desired strength. Making tea in a mug should be called a "dunk" teabag should be removed before addition of milk/sugar/lemon. Not that I'm fussy or anything 🙂

Phos · 14/07/2023 22:27

@tkwal ooh never heard of it being called a "dunk" - whereabouts is that from?

I was once invited to a neighbour's house mid-morning. She was a French lass and had been to the baker's to get almond croissants. She made me tea with whole milk (bleurgh. I'd been having skimmed for over 30 years by that point) and it looked like she'd threatened it a spoon-point with a dip of the tea bag. Tha's oop north now lass, tha can't be offerin' an abomination like that to t'neighbours! Gnat's piss it were.

@Kilopascal

i think I need to book in for a very long weekend to sample all the options!

boobot1 · 14/07/2023 23:16

No you MUST use a teapot!

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 14/07/2023 23:32

I personally don't do milk in my tea these days, but if i did, the teabag would be dunked after milk was added.
