To think DH is wrong about how you make a brew

... or maybe I'm weird!

I always maintain you put the bag in, then the water, then the milk and then you get the tea to your desired strength before removing the tea bag. DH just made a fuss about this saying I do it the wrong way. But surely leaving the bag in is sensible insurance against an unfortunate slip and putting too much milk in! Have I been badly taught?

But always milk first with instant coffee otherwise it tastes scorched.

5foot5 · 14/07/2023 16:20

You are ALL wrong and VVU for putting milk in at all. Yuck.

S'funny that coffee is still discernible as coffee whether you serve it with or without milk. But tea with milk is a completely different drink to tea on its own.

I hate it when people making you a cup of tea automatically assume you will want milk in and put it in the cup without even asking. Worse still is if they put the milk in the cup first and you stop them before they pour and say "excuse me I don't take milk" so they tip the milk out but then pour the tea without rinsing the cup out so you get this sort of milky film. Gross.

It’s not just about taste and opinion though, it’s science.

you might say you like cakes baked at 50 degrees, most people would say the science means that wouldn’t work!

HeritageBlooms · 14/07/2023 16:07

No milk

A kindred spirit

Dontletsummerend · 14/07/2023 16:22

Literally why I don’t make tea for anyone.
Plus it’s disgusting.

GalileoHumpkins · 14/07/2023 16:28

Fromage · 14/07/2023 16:12

Does anyone else ever make a proper pot of tea with leaves?

Yes, I love a cup of Lord Grey or Royal Miss Grey made in a teapot.

MissDollyMix · 14/07/2023 16:28

Take your tea bag out before adding milk. Animals. (But not as bad as MIFs)

Well yes. There are probably scientifically optimum diets, lifestyles, clothing choices and on and on. But who is living that way? Aren't we all just trying to find a bit of pleasure in our day, which is easily done with a cup of tea. Snarking about how somebody else finds their own happiness is so strange.

Liking the taste of tea when done certain ways is really a matter of preference first. And semi-raw cake is not an equivalent to liking milk first or whatever. That would be making it with tepid water or using a microwave or similar.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/07/2023 16:32

Milk last in tea but first in coffee

finewelshcheese · 14/07/2023 16:32

I take the teabag out before adding the milk.

AdoraBell · 14/07/2023 16:33

I do it the way you do it OP, your DH can do it his way.

TheNoodlesIncident · 14/07/2023 16:36

This distressing situation can be avoided by not putting milk in the cup first, which is all kinds of wrong, and by the polite query beforehand of "How do you like your tea?"

The worst cup of tea I ever had was a lukewarm - I don't believe the kettle involved, if there was one, actually boiled - pallid brew with both milk and lemon in it. It was made by a lad, possibly Albanian, who didn't understand the brief instructions given in my rather shaky Greek. It was an experience, I'll give you that...

Colour is adjusted by amount of milk (again in my opinion it shouldn’t be much milk!) of course it isn’t! If it’s not strong enough to begin with, no amount of withholding milk will make that nice rich colour.

YABU for calling it a brew. It’s the correct term in N Yorkshire. Are you denying the validity of the N Yorkshire dialect?

My tea ALWAYS is strong enough to begin with, so can only go one way. It needs just enough milk and not a drop more!

Mumtothreegirlies · 14/07/2023 16:41

Nooo you never add milk before removing the bag as it decreases the temperature of the water and stops the brewing process

ClemmyTine · 14/07/2023 16:51

NEmama · 14/07/2023 16:07

That's rank

Sometimes I do take the teabag out with the arm of my glasses. ;)

SoSoSoSo · 14/07/2023 16:57

YABU for thinking IABU for calling it a brew. Definitely accepted terminology oop norf!

It's still wrong!

Acceptable if before you add milk 😉

AgnesX · 14/07/2023 17:08

TheNoodlesIncident · 14/07/2023 15:22

No, putting the milk in stops the tea brewing any further. So I'd look squoggle eyed at you if I saw you doing that. Wait until it's brewed nicely, take teabag out then add milk as required.

A friend of mine doesn't like any agitation of the tea bag, thinking it releases tannins and so forth. To my mind, this is A Good Thing, but he clearly doesn't agree!

Squoggle eyed 😄 and I agree!

Technonan · 14/07/2023 17:15

Waht's wrong with all of you? Tea bags? Use tea leaves!

Qilin · 14/07/2023 17:27

You should always out the milk in afterwards, not before removing the tea bag. It doesn't brew properly once the milk goes in and it cools down a little ime.

Mind, we usually use leaves and tea pot, so milk always goes in last that way.

Qilin · 14/07/2023 17:31

Fromage · 14/07/2023 16:12

Does anyone else ever make a proper pot of tea with leaves?

Yes, we have Yorkshire Tea leaves and a big ore-heated teapot.

GalileoHumpkins · 14/07/2023 17:32

If you leave the teabag in doesn't it slip out and slap you in the face while you're drinking?

macshoto · 14/07/2023 17:33

Tealeaves in teapot preferable. In that case the milk can (and arguably should) go in the cup (or mug) first.

If making tea in a mug. Warm mug. Put teabag in. Boiling water. Brew to taste. Gently remove teabag. Add milk to taste. Only way.

As others have said, adding milk too early stops the brewing process working properly.

Characterbuilding · 14/07/2023 17:34

I’ll be crucified but I do
milk
bag
water
🤗

BlastedSkreet · 14/07/2023 17:35

All those saying you can tell if the bag is squeezed etc - rubbish! You can’t tell.

my DH claimed this and we proved through a laborious scientific experiment that he can’t tell.

He also can’t tell if the milk goes in before or after the bag is taken out.

Or if the kettle had been reboiled.
