Colleague reported me to RSPCA

Not sure what to do with this one…..
I work for a big company and have been taking my dog to work with me
this week as my usual dog
walker is away. We’re in north Scotland so It’s not hot, I leave all the car windows open 1/3 way and come out hourly to check on her, offer water and a wee and walk her in my lunch hour.
oddly (to me) yesterday a colleague from a different department I don’t know at all was standing by
my car when I came for one the checks-
she told me she was reporting me for leaving my dog in the car all day, that I was an idiot and that I should be ashamed. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything, and today Found a note on my windscreen at the end of the day from RSPCA to say they’d had a welfare call about a dog locked in the car, they’d come and found her calm with windows open and had a chat with her thru the open window (?!) and were satisfied she was well cared for and NFA.

do I just leave it at that? Or try and find the name of the women who reported me and complain on basis of her being so rude? It all just seems so odd.

Your colleague saw something that didn’t seem right to her (and wouldn’t to most people)- a dog left in a car all day. Just because you say you are coming out every hour, how is she suppose to know that’s the truth?
She got a little upset, as most people would went they suspect an animal is suffering.
She reported it to the correct authorities.
They came and checked and saw nothing illegal.
End of.

I think we can all admit it’s not ideal, not matter what you tell yourself. Sadly a lot of poor animal welfare is not illegal. Hopefully it’s just a short term thing.

jennyjones198080 · 13/07/2023 23:46

I would be interested in the RSPCA and SsPCA’s view on this.

a few people are concluding from this thread that thw SSPCA thinks it’s fine to leave a dog in A car for long periods of time. That goes against their published advice.

this thread is sending very mixed signals with a few posters and OP vilifying the concerned citizen and claiming the SSPCA have no concerns with dogs left in cars in July.

perhaps mumsnet could seek the official advice? I know they won’t comment on the truthfulness of OP’s claims - but they may clear this up. Or the dailymail could do it😂😂

I presume you are in Caithness where it was 14 degrees at 12pm. Not exactly boiling, but just another inaccuracy in your story.

Not Caithness! You’re warmer
than here!

And yet welfare officer happy
she’s calm, and ok and he’s recommended NFA so I’m all for guidance but I have her with me
this week and doing my
best to keep her comfortable as assessed by SPCA soooo….🤷‍♀️

You're being a bit goady now

Fairly sure mumsnet have
better to do than contact
the local SPCA office
to me but if they ask me for those details am happy to share them! Think the officer would be confused by that call tho 😂

Simply tiring of people
claiming they know better than an animal welfare
officer, it’s odd.

Hmmm … I find this quite confusing.

You must work near one of the SPCA centres, since their officer got to you quickly enough that your colleague was still waiting outside your car, no?

TheShellBeach · 13/07/2023 23:50

So you want to report the colleague who you think was verbally abusive to you, to your HR department.

I think they'll think your being frivolous and also unkind to your dog - but you crack on and report the woman who was concerned for your unfortunate animal.
See how far it gets you.

PoseyFlump · 13/07/2023 23:52

How strange your colleague only reported you and not all the other people leaving dogs in cars in your car park. Or is that a drip feed?

Exactly @jennyjones198080 a number of posters who can't understand that just because the OP is getting away with it, it shouldn't be encouraged for other idiots.

The RSPCA/SPCA guidance and the personal opinion of officers sadly is not always supported by the law.

Pretty much anyone with a head screwed on knows that leaving a dog in a car for 6 hours, even with a check every hour, is not ideal. However it is also not illegal so would have to be NFAd.

Animal Welfare Laws are very sadly lacking.

(And I speak as an Animal Welfare Officer)

Not ideal, but not that bad. As I do all the things I mentioned initiallly to ensure her comfort. Colleague was
verbally abusive (more than “upset”)over a happy dog in a
cool car. I find that odd. Hence my
question as
to how
to manage any further dealings with her (I’m fine with
my set up this week for my dog as is
SPCA now)

PoseyFlump · 13/07/2023 23:53

I say report your colleague to HR. Then HR can log you as an incompetent person of concern. Will do you more damage than her.

I’d be horrified if I knew a colleague kept their dog in their car all day!! I’m a bit shocked you think this is ok.. better to leave your dog at home and find a temporary alternative. x

TheShellBeach · 13/07/2023 23:55

I'm a bit puzzled as to why the SPCA didn't check all the other dogs left in cars at your workplace.
After all, you said lots of your colleagues do this.

Getting
away with SPCA saying all is fine? Okaaaaay 😵‍💫
no idea who else
she Has reported. It’s a big organisation and I don’t know her at all-
but good point. If
she’s being abusive
to other pet
owners and
regularly calling animal welfare that is
strange behaviour. I’ll keep
the note in case anyone else raises it with HR and I’m contacted to comment.

It isn't strange behavior to call animal welfare when one is concerned about an animal, OP.
It's the right thing to do.

Not in Scotland you didn't!

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 13/07/2023 23:59

What an utterly daft thread to start OP, if it's real, you clearly don't give a shit about other people's opinions why come on and ask for them?

Nope, but it’s strange to be verbally
abusive to a
colleague in a work setting
(whole
point of my post)
