I am sure there are ways to get in to it.

Well I wondered why he played the "I'll happily supply my phone" card to try and make himself look reasonable compared to the government.

Clearly it's because he never actually intended to hand over the messages and was always intending to have "forgot the code"

Surely it’s irrelevant? If he was using WhatsApp as reported then messages are linked to a phone number not a phone. Provided he was backing them up somewhere (iCloud?) he can access from another phone by putting the sim card in it and installing WhatsApp.

His passcode is 2888. If you're old like me you'll know what that is.
