My boobs, my business!

I see loads of bra size arguments on here, usually an individual is torn to shreds for stating she either has a 34 band at size 8-10 and is (god forbid it!) comfortable!
How dare she?? Doesn't she know that bra sizing is an SCIENCE that every woman needs to conform to??
Strangers on the internet know far more than you about what band size you ought to wear, and if you claim to be a 34A then you must be fooling yourself.

What the heck is all that about? It's almost militant. Not all bodies are the same. Some women feel better in a slacker band, and there is no perfect standard or science for comfort.
It is up to the individual how they choose to dress their boobs. But 'personal preference' seems to get a lot of people irate for some reason. There's this persistent myth that all women are wearing the wrong bra size, where almost every bra or boob thread gets derailed by.

Why are other women so freakily invested in the band size of other people? If men were demanding our bra choices were all wrong there's be a justifiable uproar. But for me the same applies to women - mind your own business unless the poster has asked for an opinion.

So currently the dogma (and it is fucking dogma) that most women are wearing the wrong bra seems to be acceptable. I have seen images of perfectly lovely silhouettes where the reaction has been extreme - she MUST be wearing the wrong size (God the hOrror!!!) even though she looks fantastic.

Back the hell off!
My body, my bra, my business. If my cup size choice startles you, maybe go for a walk in nature and get the blood pressure back down. Surely IANBU? Grin

I wondered how it was possible that all these women weren’t noticing that their bra band was too loose? Maybe because it wasn’t too loose really, but just comfortable?

well not quite. The bra kind of compensate with the wrong cup size.

Women seem generally happy at the idea of trying on 25 pair of jeans to find the perfect fit, or at least resigned about it, but most women won't try 25 different bras to find the perfect fit. It's strange when you think about it.

I once said that I sew up the back of my bras, then step into them and pull them up over my hips.

The reaction was as if I'd said I was going to shoot everyone in the entire lingerie business.

Utterly bonkers. My bras, my business.

I once wore a bandeau I had made from a pair of old tights. I was early 20's and love how it just slipped on and stayed put, and i couldnt feel that thing, just wonderful!
I feel like I have just owned up to a felony Grin

I’ve never had a bra fitting, because it sounds awkward and I just try bras on until they feel comfortable. Do they measure you in your clothes or in your bra?

Ideally they will see you in just the bra because obviously they can get the best view of it that way. But if you're not comfortable with that, they'll do whatever you prefer. R&P and Bravissimo provide dressing gowns and will leave the room as you change and knock before coming back in.

Lentilweaver · 12/07/2023 14:07

Lol at this thread. I recently got myself remeasured in M and S, which is a cardinal sin on MN. But I feel comfy in my new bras, honest. ( am not very busty). I am scared to go near Boob and Bust, plus there is a M and S near me, so that's what I did.

Tiqtaq · 12/07/2023 14:07

@Lacucuracha in your clothes or sometimes just by eye depending on the fitter

The fitter will probably want to see how the bra they recommend looks on but you can always say you don't want this.

Perhaps because for some of us it has been a bit life changing finding the correct bra size. I looked like I'd dropped a stone in weight and felt so much confident and better about myself.

After discovering BOB I actually look like I have boobs when I wear a bra now 🙈

Neverinamonthofsundays · 12/07/2023 13:13

Well according to a thread on the feminism board women should probably burn all their bras as they are too feminine....

Can you link to that thread?

I'm convinced that bra sizes are made up, so you just buy whatever seems reasonable.

Also i hate bras and wish that we didn't have to wear them, sadly though I have nipples 😂

Have you tried silicon nipple covers? Be careful not to get ones with very ornate edges though as they show through and look a bit as if you have a different kind of situation.

On the original subject. I read most of the bra threads, tried the Boob or Bust method and spent £££££s on postage buying and returning bras. I kept just one that seemed to fit and was the least uncomfortable. I can't wear it.

I can't face trying again so if I need to wear a bra it is a very old one that I have uncurved the wires in, to enlarge the cups to accommodate the spread. It doesn't fit properly but it does keep them at the right level.

I reached the conclusion that most people on here have no idea about breasts that belong to other people but have read a lot of threads and articles on how to fit a bra and not thought about how others might be different to themselves. Like most things really.

I think what people find strange is the over-investment in other women's tits. A one-rule-fits-all approach is weird.

Breasts are NOT like shoes, at all.

and feet are not like bras...

but it's ok to prefer different shoes, or different bras, surely?

It is true that many (most?) women wear the wrong bra size, and that their size will change a lot during their life.

As proven when they finally meet a professional fitter and the difference is blindingly obvious. It is mainly band size too big with a cup too small. The shop lady in M&S and the rest, armed with her tape measure tend to get it completely wrong.

As proven also by the number of women who claim their bra is so "uncomfortable" and they must get rid of it the minute they walk through the door. If it's uncomfortable, there's something not right.

That said, if you are happy with your own bra, why is it anyone's business, and who on earth is commenting on the size of complete strangers on an internet forum 😂. If you want to wear sports bras, or padded ones, with or without underwire, who cares.

Where is this research that most women are wearing the "wrong" size bra?
Are most women wearing the wrong size clothes too? Do we need some outsider to measure us and tell us what is comfortable?

If I wear a bra it comes off the second I come in the door, that does not mean "there's something not right"...I also take off my coat, shoes and jeans too in the name of comfort. By your logic I can't buy the right size in those either.

Well that's the point, you can do whatever you like! Telling others they are wrong when they are happy is the issue (not you, obvs, i am referring to the brassiere police).

literally the opposite of what you are quoting, there's no "one size fit all and the first one you grab will be fine".

You are the one who started the thread, why can't people have a discussion about that one item of clothing? Weird.

The day you stop caring about this is honestly a great day!
No bras, or thin fabric ones only over here ... nips probably visible on a cold day but who gives an F.

Some will tell you only because they had some kind of revelation and finally found the right fitter, and realised how they've be wearing the wrong bra for years and they didn't know.

It's like telling some parents that the baby vests are designed to be removed down, not pulled across their head, which makes a massive difference when you had a poonami. It's just talking.

lalaloopyhead · 12/07/2023 14:14

I tried measuring using the bra intervention thing and I was something like 26D/E (normally worse 34b) well jesus no...apart from where the hell do you get such a size on the highstreet and there is no way on earth I could wear a 26 band and breath/live.

I am sure you were supposed to scoop all the fat from round the sides and get this in your bra cup as this is techinically breast tissue - well maybe a little bit but mine is mostly side fat and it ain't going and definitely not staying in a bra!
I've now ditched all bras now and wear nice comfortable/supportive bralettes instead.

It is a kind of religion here, like the bra jesus.
If you want your tits to be your own business, you are stifling important information.

I don't even know what my bra size is as all mine are wireless ones from Uniqlo that come in sizes XS/S/M/L. 😂

DrSbaitso · 12/07/2023 14:16

With the obvious caveat that this is only a suggestion and everyone should do what's best for them....if you have a lot of back and side fat, it's worth trying out longline bras as they are often more comfortable since they're not digging in along a narrow line.

FoodFann · 12/07/2023 14:16

I wear a 34C and I am a size 6-8. I ‘should’ technically wear a 28E 😂😂😂😂 it literally won’t even fit around my rib cage/doesn’t exist

Lentilweaver · 12/07/2023 14:16

Well, I was wearing the wrong bra size- had gone up by a cup- and the bra the M and S lady suggested instead was soo much better. But M and S is verboten on here. Only Bravissimo will do.

millymae · 12/07/2023 14:17

I’m another size 12 who has a size 30 back and needs a large cup size

For me a 30 back is super comfy. I can’t fasten a 28 and a 32 just doesn’t feel right.
It’s the cup size I have most trouble with as it varies from brand to brand and style. The thought of going braless fills me with horror as does wearing a bra that doesn’t keep them securely enclosed. When I buy a bra I never just stand and look at myself in the mirror. I’m that person who jumps up and down in the changing room, touches my toes again and again then puts on a tight t shirt to make sure its still a good fit and gives a smooth line
These so called bra experts may be coming from a good place with their advice and it may well be a reasonable starting point when looking for the right size but until you actually put a bra on I don’t think you can ever know whether it’s right for you.
