Or eat out at restaurants/get a takeaway etc?

Us-
Coffee shops- 2 or 3 times a week.
Eat out at restaurants- Once a week and somewhere cheap like mcdonalds or wetherspoons.
Takeaways- A couple of times a year. Used to get them a lot but too expensive now.

We don't drink alcohol or smoke so coffee shops are our treat.

How do people have so much time to spend in coffee shops?

It can't be too much of a stretch to realise we don't all do the same things and use our time differently?

It's a shame if you never have 1 hour of free time. You must be very busy. Hopefully you'll one day have an hour to meet a friend

We live rurally, so it would literally be a whole morning for me. We tend to just nip to each other's houses for coffee rather than drive for half an hour to go to a coffee shop, hence my earlier comment about people living less rurally than us.

I'm not complaining BTW, just different circumstances.

beeonmybonnett · 10/07/2023 10:53

Coffee shops - maybe once every few weeks
takeaway - usually once every 4 to 6 weeks
restaurants - very rarely, maybe once or twice a year

Ok. Well that probably answers your question about how people have "so much time" to meet in coffee shops.

IridescentRainbird · 10/07/2023 11:11

Coffee shop nearly every day.. it's my "me" time, when I can read without constantly thinking of jobs I could be doing around the house.
Takeaways a couple of times a year, Restaurants 3-4 times a year.

JanesBlond · 10/07/2023 11:16

Coffee shops - never except the staff coffee bar in my office
Get a takeaway - basically never any more, they are pretty much always rubbish
Go to a restaurant - a couple of times a month maybe, but usually to meet up with friends rather than just us going out for food. And only decent places, I resent going to a crappy chain and paying £15 for a meal I could have done better at home.

smizing · 10/07/2023 11:17

Takeaways weekly
Eat out once in a blue moon. We have small kids with no childcare so....
Coffee shops? Honestly almost never. Not my thing.

Natsku · 10/07/2023 11:30

I go to cafes once in a while, maybe every few weeks, sometimes more often.
Takeaways almost never but I'm very limited in my takeaway options where I live - pizza or pizza or pizza (yes, 3 pizza places, nothing else)
Eating in a restaurant is once in a blue moon, only when we're travelling somewhere else as there's not much here and the one decent restaurant there is OH never wants to go to because he got bad service there once and he's holding a grudge Grin its also pretty expensive, out of our budget these days

zingally · 10/07/2023 11:33

Honestly, it varies. I can go a few months without going to a coffee shop at all, then I might go every week for a while.

Somewhere like McDonalds, we probably go every 4-6 weeks. We all like it, and it's reasonable for a quick dinner or lunch when we're out and busy, and everyone will find something they like.
A proper sit down meal out is probably about every 6 weeks. That's something I'm more likely to do with a friend.
Takeaways, maybe twice a year. Even a chippy tea feels expensive these days.

caringcarer · 10/07/2023 11:34

Coffee shop very occasionally. Breakfast out at Wethersoons every Saturday morning as I have to wait 1 1/2 hours with child between a morning training session and a cricket match and not time to drive home and out again. Nice restaurants about once a month. Toby carvery once a fortnight when I think it's too hot to cook.

I'm really surprised how often some people go to coffee shops! Once a day, several times a day?! Shock I just can't imagine frittering away money on something I can make in 1 minute myself. I mean... a leisurely coffee with a friend in a nice café, sure. But presumably if you're going every day it's not really a treat, it's just picking up a drink?

I'll usually get a coffee on my way to the office, so probably 4 times a week, at least. Work for a university so the coffee shop on campus is less than £2 a time, and far nicer than a cup of instant. My banking app means I can see how much I'm spending in a month, and it's never more than £30/month on coffee. That's fine with me; many people will fritter away more than that a month and not think twice about it.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/07/2023 11:50

Coffee shops are something I only ever go into once in a blue moon, and it's usually at someone else's behest. I love coffee, more specifically, I love the coffee I drink at home, and I find the big chains' stuff too different to it to enjoy it. I don't habitually buy coffee to sit in or take away because when I have it's always been totally underwhelming.

Restaurants - probably eat out once or twice a month. It's just something nice to do with my partner if we're out and about.

Takeaway - probably once a month or so, again, just out of convenience when I can't be bothered cooking or the odd time where I do get a craving for something particular.

StillPerplexed · 10/07/2023 11:52

Coffee shops: about 2-3 times a week: I'll meet up with friends or go there to work out of the house.
Restaurants: probably about once a month average, but almost daily when we're on holiday somewhere
Takeaway: about once every other month

I have better than average savings, so it's not like all the time in the cafe is bringing me to penury. I don't really get people who have takeaway coffee in their way to work, as that can just be made at home. For me a cafe is somewhere to hang out.

astarsheis · 10/07/2023 11:52

Why? what's the purpose of your question? Is it a survey to show how many people still in Weatherspoons 😂

nasanas · 10/07/2023 12:07

I probably don't spend money on the things you do either though. Swings and roundabouts.

LisaD1 · 10/07/2023 12:13

Coffee shop at least twice a week, generally both weekend days as we make a point of spending an hour or so each day doing nothing except sitting with a coffee and chatting as the week days are so busy.

restaurants generally once or twice a month, we tend to have date night monthly and then out with the DC once a month or so.

take away very rarely, used to be weekly but I’m on a weight loss journey (3 stone down so far) and so we don’t really get takeaways

merryhouse · 10/07/2023 17:44

Coffee shops never (I prefer filter)

Pub to eat - maybe once a month? perhaps a bit less

Restaurant - birthdays and a couple of hobby group Annual Dinners

Pub for just a drink - again, it's been about once a month recently. Sometimes after hobby with the group, sometimes the two of us, and I've been out with colleagues a couple of times

Takeaways - a few times a year. Fish and chips on good Friday is a tradition. We used to have Indian once or twice a month but stopped that before lockdown. Used to stop on the way Down South and get a meal from Burger King, but have been taking sandwiches for the last few years. Had our first kebab since before lockdown last month. Get pizzas occasionally at MiL's (but she pays for that)

babbscrabbs · 10/07/2023 17:50

Most good indie coffee shops do filter!

fussychica · 10/07/2023 18:16

Coffee shop- only when we're out for the day
Takeaways - never. Might buy sandwiches or similar if out for the day but never use home delivery
Restaurants- rarely. Usually only in Spain where its affordable and the quality is good. Saying that did a have a cracking lunch out whilst on holiday in Wales last week.

JazbayGrapes · 10/07/2023 18:23

Coffee shops - almost never, unless traveling abroad or somebody else invites.
Takeaways/meals out -- 2-3 times a week.
Nice meals out - once in a month or less.

girlmeetsboy · 11/07/2023 18:10

Haven't read the whole thread but we have a really decent wetherspoons near us, if we decided to have a few glasses of wine once in a while would be happy with the food for the price

RampantIvy · 11/07/2023 18:14

Mumsnet sneers at Wetherspoons, but there are some decent ones around, as well as some that you would want to avoid.

They all serve the same heated up food though.

RampantIvy · 11/07/2023 18:32

I can't remember the last time I ate in a Spoons. It wouldn't be my first choice, but I know from what DD has said the quality between different branches is very variable.
