Or eat out at restaurants/get a takeaway etc?

Us-
Coffee shops- 2 or 3 times a week.
Eat out at restaurants- Once a week and somewhere cheap like mcdonalds or wetherspoons.
Takeaways- A couple of times a year. Used to get them a lot but too expensive now.

We don't drink alcohol or smoke so coffee shops are our treat.

Chain coffee shops, never. Independent coffee shops, as often as I can manage it. Small chain restaurants, maybe once in six months. Independent restaurants once a month. Takeaway once a month at most.

Gosh. I know what you mean. I only use independent places too. Those chain places are sooo nasty.

Fairislefandango · 09/07/2023 18:18

I'm really surprised how often some people go to coffee shops! Once a day, several times a day?! Shock I just can't imagine frittering away money on something I can make in 1 minute myself. I mean... a leisurely coffee with a friend in a nice café, sure. But presumably if you're going every day it's not really a treat, it's just picking up a drink?

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 18:19

I don't go to coffee shops unless it's a place to stop on a really long drive. Not very often.
Restaurants and cafes - about once a week.
Takeaways, maybe four times a year.

TheChosenTwo · 09/07/2023 18:22

Coffee shop - never, hate coffee and tea and only really drink water or alcohol. Plus I’ve eaten cakes from some of them and they’ve been so bland and taste cheap!
takeaway - sometimes twice a week, sometimes none in a month.
eat out - at least once a week. Never in a Wetherspoons though 😂 I ate there once for a work lunch out, awful.

TrueScrumptious · 09/07/2023 18:23

I don’t use coffee shops in general. A couple of times a year.

I wouldn’t go to McDonald’s or Wetherspoons. I might go to my local pizza place a few times a year. Lots of good restaurants where I live.

I never get takeaways really. Once or twice a year?

RudsyFarmer · 09/07/2023 18:27

McDonald’s for the kids twice a month.

As a millennial, buying my daily coffee from Starbucks is a coping mechanism/ritual to get me through the day. It's definitely a treat, even though it's every day - I love the entire experience of stepping out of the home or office to go for a little stroll to the coffee shop and then walk around with it in my hand.

And on the weekends I love hopping in to a cafe and getting a coffee whilst the DC munch on a croissant, a lovely little luxury I will never give up.

It's not THAT expensive. It's about £1,000 a year. Big deal.

I can hear the Boomers now shouting: THIS IS WHY YOU CAN'T AFFORD A HOUSE.

Terrribletwos · 09/07/2023 18:46

Sissynova · 09/07/2023 14:49

Surely by that logic you wouldn’t ever have anything out of the house though? Why have lunch in a cafe since it’s cheaper at home? Why have a coffee out? Why have dinner? Why go the the cinema when you can watch tv?

The answer is that it is a totally different experience and many people are prepared to pay for that.

Refusing to ever eat or drink outside your own home unless you have brought your food with you sounds quite joyless.

I have found (for the most part) eating out is a joyless experience. It's usually shit food and beverages at high prices combined with being rammed in to fairly drab surroundings. I really can't think of the last place I had a decent meal in a nice place. It's usually a choice between Wetherspoons, Costa, etc (any other corporate crap eateries) or "independent" cafes which sell "homemade" (bought in) cakes/traybakes which are tasteless and overpriced.

LBOCS2 · 09/07/2023 18:50

Hmm.

Coffee shop - probably a couple of times a week? Very rarely while WFH but now I commute into town I go in the morning each day I commute.

Eating out - we eat as a family or a couple at a restaurant at least a couple of times a month. Also our DC get McDonalds after their swimming lessons on a Saturday, and I can often be persuaded to have a hamburger with them!

Takeaways - once a week, on a Friday.

TripleCheesecake · 09/07/2023 19:12

Love going to coffee shops - probably 2/3 times a week.
I like the atmosphere, as well as the coffee.

Restaurants - maybe 3 times a year, when on a city break. Otherwise, we don’t go to restaurants.
I prefer breakfast or light lunch at small cafes. I go once or twice during the week with dcs & go for breakfast with Dh and dcs most weekends.

Takeaways - 4/5 times a year. Usually when we have guests over/vice versa

CirreltheSquirrel · 09/07/2023 19:13

I never go to coffee shops just for coffee but we tend to have lunch out in cafes on Friday/Saturday/Sunday. Friday because we both wfh that day and only buy enough lunch supplies to take to work for 4 days per week (a pack of 8 wraps). It started during COVID as a way to support local independents.

Saturday and Sunday is because our main weekend activity is cycling so we tend to ride to a cafe, get lunch and ride home. Again, almost all independents unless we're desperate.

Restaurants in the evening are for special occasions or being away from home. Takeaways are very rare. I haven't been to a McDonalds for years and chain coffee shops tend to only be at motorway services etc when there's no choice.

Me too.

4 of my work colleagues will pick up a latte and toast on their way into work from the drive through Costa... 6 days a week. Toast in a paper bag... not fresh, crispy-edged, hot and dripping with butter, just sad soft toast in a paper bag... they paid for warm bread.

BrandNewBicep · 09/07/2023 19:32

Coffee shops - independents only - 6/7 days a week.
Takeout - maybe 4/5 x year
Restaurants - maybe once every 3/4 months.

When I stopped drinking alcohol my coffee consumption increased!

huhpartytimeisonme · 09/07/2023 19:48

I got into coffee shops/ cafes with my mum every day we go out shopping. We used to eat out all the time but it's too expensive now . We do however enjoy a McDonald's too often tho 🫣

Ginola2345 · 09/07/2023 20:02

Coffee shops between once and four times a week.

Restaurant maybe twice a month.

Takeaway once to twice a fortnight.

Wouldn’t go to McDonalds, Greggs, Weatherspoons, Toby Cavery or Nandos if you paid me.

So am I. I WFH 3 days a weeks and at the office 1 day a week. I neither live near or work near a coffee shop.
When I WFH DH regularly supplies me with tea, and I make my own at the office.

For me it's an after work wind down. I usually meet friends, but sometimes will go by myself and read a book.

I like my local coffee shop. The coffee is good, the atmosphere is nice and the staff are friendly. Lots of regulars always in at the same time too, so people to chat to if I want.

RampantIvy · 09/07/2023 22:41

None of the coffee shops nearest to me in the market town 5 miles away would be open after work. Those of you who visit coffee shops regularly must live in towns or cities.

I wish they had had coffee shops when I was a teenager and too young to go into a pub. The nearest place I could meet friends would have been a Wimpy burger bar or Pizzaland. We got one of the first McDonalds in the UK when I was 16.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/07/2023 23:03

Runnersandtoms · 09/07/2023 14:46

Probably would have to be a separate thread but how often do people buy drinks in a pub? I know a lot of people who seem to go to the pub a lot. I only go if there's some kind of social event and I'm always quietly horrified at the price of drinks compared to what they would cost in a supermarket. £8 for a glass of wine when you can buy a really nice bottle for that. I can understand the social aspect but I know people that go to the pub just with their partner. I can't see why you wouldn't just have a much cheaper drink and a chat at home.

We go to the pub a couple of times a week as a couple.

reasons?

  • we are trying not to drink at home so much.
  • we have our best chats there because there’s no housework / work / jobs / kids / other distractions
  • we like to see other people we know in our local. It makes us feel like part of our local community.
  • we don’t have a garden and like to sit in the beer garden
  • our local is just lovely
  • it’s a great way to unwind after a hard day at work before we go back home and tackle real like / chores
  • theres often live music on. We like to dance!

Would you like any other reasons? 😬

of course it’s more expensive than home. Everything is. Coffee, food, anything. I love our pub and won’t be changing our habit for the world. We rarely have more than 2 drinks so it’s not like we are getting rat arsed there.

Zood · 09/07/2023 23:07

Coffee twice a week
Restaurants, usually lunch every 4-6 weeks
McDonalds/Wetherspoons never
Takeaways never

Xmasbaby11 · 09/07/2023 23:10

Coffee shop - at least twice a week. It’s my preferred way to socialise with a friend , either breakfast or lunch on a weekday at an independent place. great coffee and food, spend between 8-13£ for a couple of hours, so much cheaper than an evening out. We prefer it to home because we all have kids and wfh - just nice to be out where it’s a treat and no effort to host. I meet one friend at a time.

takeaways - once every 3 months.

restaurant with family - maybe every one or two months but usually if we’re away from home.

sixthvestibule · 09/07/2023 23:17

Pub lunch once a week.
Restaurant once a week.
No coffees or takeaways.

MrsKeats · 10/07/2023 08:11

I often work in coffee shops as I work from home and hate being stuck in all day.

nasanas · 10/07/2023 08:16

Coffee shops** - most days

Eat out at restaurants** - haven't done for years, but I have been to McDonald's - McDonald's and Wetherspoon are not restaurants to me though, juts cheap fast food

RampantIvy · 10/07/2023 09:44

How do people have so much time to spend in coffee shops?
