Your pictures won’t have that blurred misty haze if you wipe the camera lens on your phone before taking them.

Your gold jewellery will sparkle like mad if you leave it to soak in warm soapy water and scrub gently with an old toothbrush, rings do the inside underneath the settings to allow light to penetrate better.

Drinking a pint of water first thing in the morning will rehydrate your body and help get rid of that groggy feeling. Drink as much as you can throughout the day - you’ll thank me for it.

Closing the apps on your phone will make it work more efficiently, same for clearing the browser history.

AIBU to ask what your tips of the day are?

Buy the little frozen blocks of spinach and put into one pot type of meals i.e chilli, bolognese, casserole or curry style dinners.

It makes meals go a bit further and spinach is good for you.

Win, win 😁

I do this all the time. One of my WW meals called for fresh spinach pan fried to go with a dish. I soon realised the frozen spinach nuked in the microwave was far quicker and also tasted just as good.

Also probably more nutritious - aren't the vitamins and minerals better preserved?

@lapisamethyst @Toothiepegg FAIRYLIQUID/ DISH SOAP IS CARCINOGENIC PLEASE STOP THIS NONSENSE AND JUST USE SOAP!

Why do you think this? We use it on dishes, so it doesn't seem likely it would be carcinogenic.

Don't bother saying goodbyes when you want to leave a social event with alcohol involved. Nobody will notice and your goodbyes will take a further hour. Just grab your jacket and leave.

I do this !! 😂

Yes, seems strange - you rinse it off anyway.

Quickest way to cool down is run a tea towel under cold water, wring out and twist and place around the neck of the person who needs cooling down or yourself.

Also on this theme - splashing cold water on your ears also works really well as does generally cooling your ears - eg. if you have a cold can of softdrink before you open it, hold it against your ears.

No idea why this works maybe huge concentration of blood cells in ears.

It's a good tip if you are at work or somewhere where you can't do cold towels or just strip naked. Splash cold water on your ears.

If you smudge mascara, don't try to remove it while it's wet
Let it dry then brush it off with a clean mascara wand

Maireas · 09/07/2023 17:41

Ears sounds like a good tip.
What also works is holding your wrists under a running cold tap, vein side up. It genuinely cools you down.

Humidititties · 09/07/2023 17:44

Line a small bowl with foil, shiny side up, teaspoon of bicarb, put your silver/gold jewellery in, pour in boiling water, wait for it to stop fizzing and your jewellery will be clean and shiny. Give it a quick rinse in hot soapy water to remove any bicarb residue

Cut sausages, pizza, garlic bread and the crusts off bread with scissors.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/07/2023 17:45

Most of these are great but a couple are bonkers. Go to the toilet all the time at work?! I knew someone who stole toilet rolls (when they had them delivered in packs and also dishwasher tablets and bottles of washing up liquid and tea/ coffee. He was actually fired for this as there were other things he’d been disciplined for.

Also wasting vodka on cleaning?! Even cheap vodka?!

nopuppiesallowed · 09/07/2023 17:45

For a really thirst quenching non alcoholic drink, half fill a glass with water and top up with tonic, ice and lemon. Sounds disgusting, but it's great.

Top your shepherd's pie mash with crushed crisps and finish heating in the oven. Better texture.

Best mashed potato ever? Mash your potatoes with garlic oil (no milk or butter) and a lot of mixed or Italian herbs. My husband raves about this.

To trick your kids into eating mashed potato, tell them they don't have to, but ask if they will mash the potatoes for you. Put the potatoes in a large bowl and give them the oil and herbs to put in a little at a time. After they've pulverised the potatoes, ask them to taste a little to find out if they need to add more oil or herbs. This worked with all 6 of my grandchildren.......

Run your washing machine on hot with a dishwasher tablet in to clean it. You'll be amazed at the colour of the water!

A line of talc around the wall, across the doorstep etc stops ants coming in the house

LydiaGwilt · 09/07/2023 17:51

Instead of toilet wet wipes just use a small spray bottle of water - you don't need to buy a special 'toilet paper spritz'

To stop washing powder clumping in the drawer just put it straight into the drum, near the back, and spin the drum a few times by hand so that it falls into the holes. Someone whose husband was a washing machine mechanic posted this tip some time ago.

If you're batch cooking, once the food has frozen pop out the blocks from the container and put them in freezer bags. Saves room plus frees up your containers.

Genius, thanks!

or go one better and line the containers with freezer bags, put the whole thing in the freezer and you now have a container stackable shaped frozen block already in a bag. Works very well with soup.

You do need to wait for the food to be cool enough to not melt the bag though!

How do you close an app? None of mine have an x or anything like that. I've always wondered this as apparently us old gits keep lots of windows open, there must be a simple fix!

Do you have an optimiser app on your phone? Use that to delete any blocked calls and then use the optimiser - it will close off any open apps.

If your home is looking grubby, remove your glasses/contact lenses.

gemstoneju · 09/07/2023 18:06

This is a tip I read somewhere- you can remove the black and brown marks on the washing machine seal by mixing equal parts of vinegar and bicarb to a paste and spreading on, leaving for ten minutes then putting it on a brief rinse cycle. I haven't tried it as my machine is still very new, but apparently other people tried and say it works.

Because once you've used it the ghastly stuff doesn't wash out.

Oooh, love this. I've done my pelvic floor exercises whilst readying these. 💪 do that now!

Absolutely. Women are not advised enough to do this as a life long habit. Prolapses seriously affect so many lives.

OlympicProcrastinator · 09/07/2023 18:12

Give your teeth a quick 20 second quick brush to get the surface dirt off before brushing your teeth properly afterwards. You’ll be amazed at how much more foamy and deep cleaning the second brush is.

Shodan · 09/07/2023 18:15

On freezing food- ladle the cooled food directly into a ziploc bag. Lay the bag flat on the work top, do up most of the ziploc, then pat the food flat in the bag and squeeze out any air. Do up the remaining bit of ziploc. You now have flat (ish) packs of food that you can either stack or stand upright, like books on a shelf. Use a marker to label the bag.

Keep bicarb and white vinegar in the house always. Apart from the uses already mentioned, bicarb can be used to rescue a saucepan with burnt-on food: scrape as much food off as you can, put a little hot water in the pan and then make a thick paste with some bicarb. Leave overnight. The burnt food will scrape off easily the next day. White vinegar can be used to descale things- esp a kettle. Both mixed together make a good dishwasher cleaner- sprinkle in bicarb, add vinegar and run the dishwasher.

If you have a glass shower screen in a hard water are- once you've cleaned off the limescale, you can do a light layer of clear car wax. It helps repel the water.
