Is this normal? 🤔 (cleaning)

AIBU to spend upwards of an hour and a half cleaning the bathroom every week?

I'm very particular with how I go about it.
Disposable gloves for cleaning the toilet, no harsh chemicals, different cloths for different areas etc.

Just finished a big clean. Started with the windows and windowsill, removed cobwebs, polished anything chrome, hoovered the floor, cleaned toilet inside and out, then sink (including pedestal), bath, shower and all tiles, antibact door handles, wiped skirting boards and radiator, dusted ornaments, rinsed shampoo bottles etc, buffed mirror and finished by mopping floor.

YABU - That's too much
YANBU - Yes, I do the same or more

xx

Please don’t use disposable gloves. So bad for the environment.

ChiquitoLovesAMojito · 08/07/2023 20:18

I'm a cleaner for a living. For normal weekly domestic cleans, I spend no more than 30mins to do a bathroom really well. Left shining and disinfected.

I only spend more time than that on really filthy cleans, such as end of tenancy cleans where the former tenant never bothered with any cleaning and I have to spend time treating mould, scrubbing grout, removing thick limescale, removing layers of soap scum from tiles, shower trays and baths etc.

If you're doing a clean of your bathroom every week, you shouldn't need to be deep cleaning to that extent.

I’m just trying to balance “no harsh chemicals” and disposable gloves…

😂😂😂😂😂😂

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2023 20:22

Exactly @ChiquitoLovesAMojito If you're cleaning a bathroom that was cleaned yesterday, last week or even last month, how much cleaning actually needs doing?

It will be pretty spotless to start with and if it isn't, I'd be dragging in the person who's pissed all over the floor, spat toothpaste everywhere or however else it's got visibly dirty to deal with it.

CableTidy · 08/07/2023 20:23

@Blarn underrated reply! Made me laugh

RosesAndHellebores · 08/07/2023 20:26

Uuum! We give the bath/shower cubicle and basin a wipe over after every use. Trained DH and the DC to do it automatically. The bog gets a shirt of bleach after every poo. Again the family were well trained.

The cleaner does the bathrooms weekly. I think she spends 10/15 minutes on each.

I thinknyou may need some help op, in the nicest possible way.

Urghpox · 08/07/2023 20:28
  1. put toddler in bath
  2. spray everything (not toddler or bath) with Method cleaning stuff
  3. wipe everything, do floor and toilet last.
  4. dry everything
  5. dry toddler
  6. clean bath
My bathroom is tiiiiiiny, I hate cleaning, the tiles are brown fake marble stuff- they were here when we moved in and I’m too busy to want to decorate the bathroom.

I hate decorating almost as much as cleaning.

Takes about 10 mins, gets done every day as toddler is practicing weeing standing up 😏

Wexone · 08/07/2023 20:29

three bathrooms on this house. cleaned all three today in one hour. cleaner comes every second week and takes same amount cleaning them. I do a deep clean about evey two months similar to what you describe. wouldn't have the time energy to do it every week. Like someone said bathroom is clean and no one dies.

Stravaig · 08/07/2023 20:32

You must have very industrious spiders, if you need to remove cobwebs every week!

Cobwebs, windows, sills, skirtings, radiator, pedestal, polishing things, and also light fittings (glaring omission :) are all deep-clean territory for me.

Ornaments and clutter generally have no place in a bathroom: I'm all for ease of hygiene. Just clear flat surfaces that can be quickly squeegeed or wiped or mopped.

FabFitFifties · 08/07/2023 20:33

I do mine weekly - window, dust painted upper walls, wipe tiled 1/2 of walls, clean bath, sink, toilet, wash ornaments, wipe radiator and doors, polish crome, mirrors and pictures wipe laundry basket, hoover, then wash floor. It used to take 90 mins but I've got it down to 45 max by allowing myself that limit and working fast. I can't bear to 1/2 do things,so I couldn't do the sensible approach of a flip round everyday. I spend the same time on the ensuite, weekly. Are you following too many "rituals" due to your OCD?

Littlejacksmummy · 08/07/2023 20:37

I spend 3 hours a day cleaning round the toilet from my 3 year old boy. Does that count 😱

ChiquitoLovesAMojito · 08/07/2023 20:38

Ps. I always recommend my clients use a squeegee on a daily basis, to keep bathrooms from getting mouldy and limescaley. And then leave shower cubicle doors OPEN.

That one simple tool, used after the last person has used the shower that day, will prevent bathrooms from needing a deep clean.

And if you have the inclination, a quick wipe over with microfiber cloth to dry off any remaining water left on taps, shower controls and screens.

It's water being left behind that causes moulds, bacteria breeding and limescale etching into materials such as glass and chrome.

Get rid of excess water each day by spending 1-2 mins with a squeegee and a cloth, and your bathroom is perfectly fine.

Everyone in our house, including the DCs do at least a squeegee down of the shower screen. It takes seconds to do, but saves hours of scrubbing in the long term.

No not normal at all. Suspect you know that, maybe this is trolling or are you genuinely asking? If the latter, you should seek help.

ChiquitoLovesAMojito · 08/07/2023 20:43

And I never use disposable anything. Not gloves, not cloths, not blue roll etc. Bad for the environment and for your finances! It's perfectly possible to clean without creating unnecessary waste.

I also use professional products that you can buy as a general consumer that have a low environmental impact. Cut out all the overly fragranced over-priced products from the supermarkets and buy professional stuff. I highly recommend Evans "Green Tick' products.

I suspect its a look how clean and proactive I am (and may or may not be a load of rubbish)

WestwardHo1 · 08/07/2023 21:03

If it makes you happy. As long as you don't expect everyone to do the same.

I'm a bit Hmm about you chucking all those gloves though. Can you not reuse some Marigolds or something and clean them after use?

tt9 · 08/07/2023 21:06

I do more, all the tiles including walls, inside and outside cupboards, bath/shower deep clean, glass screens disinfected etc. takes 2 hours per bathroom. (housekeeper does it tbh because i am lazy busy), but i am on chemotherapy so have to be very careful. ... also would definitely not use the house hoover in the bathroom... too many bacteria that can be translocated to other parts of the house!

ClemFandango1 · 08/07/2023 21:34

I used to take a long time.
I do have OCD and found it all sensorily difficult and confusing.
Now I take about half an hour, do it really thoroughly, and listen to a podcast so it's fun.

Yes, genuinely asking 😇
No, I do not compete in the cleaning Olympics.

What made you change and how did you start?

@ChiquitoLovesAMojito Thanks for the tips! I must find another way of dealing with the germphobia. Get through far too many sponges and kitchen roll as well.

Possibly @FabFitFifties not sure though as it's not really been dealt with before.

I wipe the toilet thoroughly every day, but only hoover and mop the (tiled) floor once a week. A friend of mine steam-cleans her carpets every week!

Yep you're right it could be. But it comes across as "I have zero life..." unless it's a mh issue of course, in that case sorry op, but please seek some help, you do need to live...

If it works for you theres nothing wrong with that!

But no way i would be spending 1.5 hours a week on a bathroom - takes me around 20-25 mins a week to do it - i work quick

I do wipe the bathroom down every other day too between/sink/bath
