Is this normal? 🤔 (cleaning)

AIBU to spend upwards of an hour and a half cleaning the bathroom every week?

I'm very particular with how I go about it.
Disposable gloves for cleaning the toilet, no harsh chemicals, different cloths for different areas etc.

Just finished a big clean. Started with the windows and windowsill, removed cobwebs, polished anything chrome, hoovered the floor, cleaned toilet inside and out, then sink (including pedestal), bath, shower and all tiles, antibact door handles, wiped skirting boards and radiator, dusted ornaments, rinsed shampoo bottles etc, buffed mirror and finished by mopping floor.

YABU - That's too much
YANBU - Yes, I do the same or more

xx

Hoovered the floor. Is it carpeted? Blergh

You do realise hoovers have a hard floor setting right?

Why are you getting Cobwebs?

A spider can spin a web overnight.

Hollyppp · 08/07/2023 19:20

The gloves are sooo bad for the environment! Just wash your hands well at the end? Or use marigolds

DidyouNO · 08/07/2023 19:20

I assume you live alone to just do it once a week? I clean mine every day, toilet and sink and do the bath and toothbrush and soap weekly.

bumblebee2235 · 08/07/2023 19:21

I do mine every morning 😬 I scrub the toilet with brush and cleaner, spray and wipe toilet seat, same with bath and tiles then sink.. then twice a week brush and mop floor, and do the grouting.. then once a week changing and washing towels and mats... I do have suspected OCD which developed when pregnant.. didn't think much of it but maybe it's bad haha don't get me started on the other rooms! I probs clean 2 hours a day... have work and baby too.. I do dishes at 3 am after a feed 😅

ApolloandDaphne · 08/07/2023 19:22

20 minutes every few weeks does my bathroom. I use bleach in the loo if it needs it. No one would say my bathroom was dirty.

bumblebee2235 · 08/07/2023 19:24

Wronwron · 08/07/2023 19:15

Okay so, yes I do know what actual OCD is but I don't want to make the thread all about that. I have seen a specialist for a related issue and she said labels aren't helpful so I'm none the wiser!

I do use antibac wipes on the toilet and empty bins every couple of days or so too.

In the grand scheme of things, no it doesn't really matter but I'm curious about what other people do.

I am very slow with housework in general - probably a combination of back problems, scrubbing everything meticulously and being easily distracted!

The spiders are a problem due to very rural area and the fact I can't bring myself to hoover them up.

Yes, there's a lot else I could be getting on with but I don't tend to invite people over because I'm embarrassed the house isn't clean and tidy enough.

Ahh just read this update 😂 snap

AllTheChaos · 08/07/2023 19:24

Some people have such high standards! Mine are more, “will anyone actually get sick?” If the answer is “no”, that’s good enough for me! (Though it just being me and DD helps, as the bathroom doesn’t really get mucky). Luckily I have someone clean mine weekly. If it had to do it, it would not be anywhere near as often. Thinking about it, I’m not sure I’ve ever actually cleaned a loo!

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2023 19:24

rainbowunicorn · 08/07/2023 19:20

A spider can spin a web overnight.

But it doesn't become a cobweb until it gets dusty which takes a few weeks.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 08/07/2023 19:26

I have x3 toilets downstairs toilet, en-suite with shower and a bathroom.
When I clean all 3 it takes me about and hour and a half. I couldn't imagine taking that long each one!
I do each one once per week, clean the toilets and sink twice a week!

Catusrusty · 08/07/2023 19:26

Whoever cleans our bathroom does similar but we have no skirtings although the gloss white bath panel always needs cleaning.. We do also hoover before steam cleaning the tiled floor.

However I would say it's only when I personally clean it that things like washing down the handwash bottle gets done. If I'm doing a big clean I also buff the tiles in the shower as they get grimy and clean all the chrome.

In a normal week I'm in there for 30 minutes max but I work six days most weeks so I'm very pressed for time. If it's the deep clean with doing the tiles then I've no idea how long it actually takes but it does feel like forever. That's only maybe 3 to 4 times a year.

Have you got a handheld steam cleaner OP, I've found mine really speeds things up and I like to think I'm getting an impromptu pore opening cleanse at the same time.

Why? Many people don’t have the time or inclination to do it more often.. (Though I have friends with teenage sons, daily is not enough in their case as it appears none of them can aim)

Yes! Exactly! And if it’s not at eye level then why go looking for it?

Mumtothreegirlies · 08/07/2023 19:29

I clean mine every second day. And give it a thorough clean every week. And my house isn’t even that clean. So that sounds reasonable to me.

YouOKHun · 08/07/2023 19:31

Not sure I agree with your specialist @Wronwron. If something is a problem and getting in the way of your life or others close to you then why not label it and tackle it? Your question about your cleaning regime to gauge opinion could be seen as “reassurance seeking” which is often part of OCD. I know you don’t want to make the thread about OCD (sorry!) but I can’t work out what you want to know about your cleaning regime?

RespectMacaroni · 08/07/2023 19:32

Just finished cleaning mine actually. (I know how to do Saturday nights)

My process is:

  1. Declare to all active members of household that I’m about to do the bathroom. (“If you need a poo, go now”)
  2. Spray bathroom cleaner around
  3. Lock door and open window
  4. Strip naked
  5. Discard all empty bottles etc. abandoned by family members who believe in Shampoo Bottle Fairy.
  6. Clean everything as quickly as possible. One cloth, working from sink to toilet. Toilet last for obvious reasons.
  7. Have a shower and rinse everything down while I do

This way I can clean the bathroom grime off me immediately. AND, I get to be the first to use clean bathroom - a privilege that is Bathroom Scrubber Fairies so often do not get.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/07/2023 19:32

You do you op. But no, I don’t spend that amount of time - life is really too short!

Fairislefandango · 08/07/2023 19:36

Mine is scrubbed daily. Full disclosure I'm a gypsy and we are known to be OTT with cleaning but I don't understand how a bathroom isn't a daily task.

Some people have full-time jobs. Tbh I wouldn't dream of scrubbing my bathroom every day even if I didn't go to work. What a tedious, unnecessary waste of time! And somehow I very much doubt I'll be lying on my deathbed thinking 'Oh I wish I'd spent more time scrubbing my bathroom!'.

TheChosenTwo · 08/07/2023 19:36

I don’t see a problem if you want to spend an hour and a half cleaning your bathroom - surely you just please yourself!
My cleaner does mine once a week, probably only spends half an hour in there, it’s very small, at the weekends I will give the sink and toilet another clean, probably 10 minutes at the most.
I loathe cleaning with a passion so certainly wouldn’t be spending an hour and a half every weekend on one bathroom because I prioritise relaxing and doing fun stuff at weekends. But your priorities are your own and no one else’s.
why do you care?!

How could a porcelain surface possibly need to be a scrubbed every 24 hours? Do you live in some kind of chemically poisonous area or do you not know what scrub means?

Love that! I sometimes get naked cleaning too 😁

I clean mine to the same standard every week but takes about an hour. Shower gets cleaned after every use as we’re in a very hard water area. I just bloody love a clean bathroom. If I had the time, I’d do it twice a week

Oh dear, I hadn't thought it could be reassurance seeking behaviour.

To answer the other post, I'm not happy letting other people do the job and can get pretty upset if smelly cleaning agents have been used. Someone tried to help out recently and I caught them rinsing the toilet brush out in the sink. Had to lie down in a darkened room after that one.

Your ignorance is showing. You must think no gypsy women work?

Anyway, you do you. I love keeping my home clean.

Fairislefandango · 08/07/2023 19:45

I wonder how many men clean anythingbathrooms this often or thoroughly... It's a bit depressing, frankly.
