Is this normal? 🤔 (cleaning)

AIBU to spend upwards of an hour and a half cleaning the bathroom every week?

I'm very particular with how I go about it.
Disposable gloves for cleaning the toilet, no harsh chemicals, different cloths for different areas etc.

Just finished a big clean. Started with the windows and windowsill, removed cobwebs, polished anything chrome, hoovered the floor, cleaned toilet inside and out, then sink (including pedestal), bath, shower and all tiles, antibact door handles, wiped skirting boards and radiator, dusted ornaments, rinsed shampoo bottles etc, buffed mirror and finished by mopping floor.

YABU - That's too much
YANBU - Yes, I do the same or more

xx

It’s definitely OTT but if that’s what you want to do absolutely fine

as long as you don’t bang on to the rest off the house about how much effort and how much time you spend on housework

Wronwron · 08/07/2023 18:39

Thanks all, it looks like I am BU but mostly due to the time it takes. Today was only a rough estimate as I had to keep stopping to do other stuff then go back to it.

To answer some questions - I'd say it's medium sized and there's also another one + small loo, tiles not carpeted, I may genuinely have OCD, no I don't competitively clean, the gloves are a barrier to germs and yes I should probably ditch the ornaments!

If you genuinely have OCD, it'll affect you in more ways than cleaning your bathroom.

Plus, you cannot possibly be unreasonable unless it's making you or someone your live with unhappy.

Meeting · 08/07/2023 18:44

I'm shocked at the replies here. People seriously only clean their bathroom once a month?

Mine is scrubbed daily. Full disclosure I'm a gypsy and we are known to be OTT with cleaning but I don't understand how a bathroom isn't a daily task.

TomorrowToday · 08/07/2023 18:45

Why are you getting Cobwebs?

VisionsOfSplendour · 08/07/2023 18:47

It's your life, why would it be unreasonable to spend time doing something you're happy to do and isn't anyine else' s business?

Talia99 · 08/07/2023 18:48

Your choices are either ‘it’s too much’ or ‘I do the same’. I don’t think either is necessarily correct.

I absolutely don’t do the same but it’s only ‘too much’ if it’s causing you issues. If you are doing it because you like to, it’s like people who cook a 3 course meal from scratch every day. I don’t want to do it myself but you do you.

On the other hand, if you feel compelled to do it or panicky if it’s not done or feel you have other symptoms of it not being something you want to do but rather something you have to do, you may want to consider whether you need to address that with a therapist. While OCD is often used to mean ‘I’m very tidy’, it is actually a recognised disorder that requires help.

You haven’t said anything to suggest that’s the case but if you are posting because you actually have concerns, it’s something to consider.

Why are you getting Cobwebs?

Because spiders aren't imaginary?

Cobwebs are fact of life.

I think you've answered your own question, youre OTT 😂

Greenfree · 08/07/2023 18:50

Weekly I would do bath, shower, tiles, toilet, floor, sink, mirror, dust.

Monthly I would do window, window sill, blind, skirting boards and everything else unless there was obvious marks on them in between

kitsuneghost · 08/07/2023 18:51

You do you
It's not a competition

Talia99 · 08/07/2023 18:51

Oops and while I was posting, you’ve said you think you may have OCD. If you mean literally (intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviour etc) you need to ask your GP for a referral to a specialist.

No I don't think cleaning the bathroom daily is OTT. Do people leave watermarks on glass and mirrors and toothpaste on the sink for weeks on end? I wouldn't want to use a toilet that hadn't been scrubbed for a month.

eandz13 · 08/07/2023 18:53

I have OCD. Do you think if you don't clean to that standard that regularly then you'll get ill/something bad will happen? Or do you just like it clean and it's satisfying?

Yeah but who scrubs a toilet for a month?

Mind takes about 5 minutes 😁

rosao · 08/07/2023 18:58

Are you particularly slow when cleaning? I give mine a deep clean each week but takes no where near one and a half hours. More like 30 mins....quick wipe over and a squirt of bleach down the loo all day and all is well.

Flufferblub · 08/07/2023 19:00

Give it a quick clean daily, and a deeper clean every few weeks. No one's died.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2023 19:00

Floralnomad · 08/07/2023 18:18

I clean my bathrooms most days , I can’t imagine how bad they’d look if I left them a week .

They look exactly the same as when they've just been cleaned.

I never understand threads like this. Those of you who are scrubbing every square inch several times a week.

What exactly are you cleaning? There is no dirt building up in that time. You're cleaning things that haven't had chance to get dirty. Why??

I think most people have a happy medium between a daily full on a scrub and not doing any cleaning at all for a month . No one is advocating that.

Maybe though I misunderstood your post and you were saying other gypsys are OTT while you consider your schedule to be pretty normal

Like the OP you should do you but always good to recognize that it's not the amount of cleaning that most people who dont clean for a job do

CornishTiger · 08/07/2023 18:32

Hoovered the floor. Is it carpeted? Blergh

Have you never considered hoovering a hard floor?

ActDottie · 08/07/2023 19:04

You don’t need to use disposable gloves what a waste!!!!! Spend however long you are happy to cleaning the bathroom, I’d say I spent about 30 mins a week.

Sparklesocks · 08/07/2023 19:06

Everyone has different cleaning standards and routines, some will say it’s OTT but others will say you don’t do it frequently enough. Best just to crack on with what suits you!

Talia99 · 08/07/2023 19:10

GertrudeJekyllRose · 08/07/2023 19:02

Have you never considered hoovering a hard floor?

This. I generally hoover my hall (wood) and bathrooms (laminate) before mopping.

Wronwron · 08/07/2023 19:15

Okay so, yes I do know what actual OCD is but I don't want to make the thread all about that. I have seen a specialist for a related issue and she said labels aren't helpful so I'm none the wiser!

I do use antibac wipes on the toilet and empty bins every couple of days or so too.

In the grand scheme of things, no it doesn't really matter but I'm curious about what other people do.

I am very slow with housework in general - probably a combination of back problems, scrubbing everything meticulously and being easily distracted!

The spiders are a problem due to very rural area and the fact I can't bring myself to hoover them up.

Yes, there's a lot else I could be getting on with but I don't tend to invite people over because I'm embarrassed the house isn't clean and tidy enough.

The acid test of OCD is not whether others here think you clean too much or too little but how you would feel if you were prevented from carrying out the clean in the particular way you do it or how easily you could hand the job to someone else. If you had intrusive thoughts about contamination and your responsibility for getting rid of the contamination, or cleaning until it’s “just right” and you felt distressed if prevented from carrying out the cleaning that would be more in line with OCD.

if you like to do a thorough job and have way of doing it that you aren’t compelled to do and would be happy to let someone else do the job and can live with their version of clean and don’t HAVE to do any of the things you mention then it’s unlikely to be OCD. There’s definitely no such thing as “a bit OCD”, it’s very distressing to have intrusive thoughts and compulsions so I hope you are OK!
