To think my parents are batshit

IHateLegDay · 08/07/2023 12:59

My parents don't own drinking glasses and never have.
Every single drink from tea/coffee to water or wine is served in a mug.
When I was growing up it seemed normal but when I moved out at 17 (I'm in my 30s now) I realised how odd it was.
I've now gone the other way and own far too many glasses for every occasion.

AIBU to think that my parents must be psychopaths?? 😂😂

Does anyone else's parents/family have odd quirks like this?

They also don’t regularly drink water or cold drinks so I don’t think they ever realise it’s unusual not to have glasses.

WhamBamThankU · 10/07/2023 19:10

See wine from a mug is bordering on alcoholism and hiding what you're drinking..... but also from a practical point of view, surely the rim is too thick?

JudgeRudy · 10/07/2023 19:30

Me too, I love a mug. I have a friend I visit regularly and it drives him potty when I make a mug of water/juice/pop...apparently only hot drinks can go in a mug. Those are the rules

Too thick for what? Surely it's the same rim and lips irrespective of what liquid is in the mug. I get it's odd and not the done thing, but why.

BTW, I really don't think wine from a mug 8ndicates alcoholism.

Elly46 · 10/07/2023 21:17

I’m in my 40’s and prefer the proper vessel but do occasionally drink wine out of my little boys old paw patrol and peppa pig melamine cups if they’re to hand to grab. I can’t really
describe why but it just feels
easy sometimes as opposed to a
stemmed
glass 😆

Reigateforever · 16/07/2023 08:22

During lockdown my neighbours in my block of flats decided to have ‘drinks’ in the communal garden, each providing their own chairs, sitting at the appropriate distance. My innocent coffee mug had whisky in it.

lissie123 · 16/07/2023 11:34

Sometimes my husband makes my tea in the wrong mug. I almost feel teary about it. So I pour the said tea into the correct ( according to me) mug.

Davros · 16/07/2023 12:32

Robert Elms (professional Londoner) says his mum never drank water, she didn't trust it! I'm from London and I don't drink water much, usually with meals, I think it's all hype. I do love tea though. These days I drink white wine from a fairly big tumbler with lots of ice, I can't go back to drinking actual wine as it's meant to be 🤷‍♀️
Who remembers the Alan Partridge scene where he visits his mad fan and he gives them a jug, a jam jar and an aerolator to drink from? Those plastic ball things you used to put in the washing machine

In the grand scheme of batshittery, this doesn't even get out of the starting blocks.

Just be thankful your parents aren't really batshit, and indulge their non vitreous drinking container fantasies.

Jellylover · 16/07/2023 17:51

When I got married in the 1980s, we were given Edinburgh Crystal glasses and I was too afraid to use them so they were kept in the sideboard and never saw the light of day. When my husband died I decided that nothing was too good to use so I put them in the kitchen cupboard and use them every day. Some have been broken but I’ve had lots of pleasure drinking from them. I’m also very particular about the mugs I drink from - a tiny mug of coffee before I dash off to work, a larger weekend coffee mug, a china mug for my tea, Xmas mugs in December and a bunny cup for Easter. Oh and I forgot, I drink Diet Coke out of a stemmed wine glass coz it tastes better that way.

Beargrumps22 · 16/07/2023 19:06

my OH drinks squash out of a mug makes me shudder. only like cold drinks out of glass glasses cant stand plastic things

CoalCraft · 16/07/2023 19:31

Lol this used to be DH and I way back when we were impoverished teenagers in a student house. Once we were gifted glasses, though, we did start using them.

Bubblyb00b · 16/07/2023 19:32

Wow, how funny. Do they serve champagne, for example, in mugs, too?

How they explain it? I mean, there must be a reason for this?

Blarn · 16/07/2023 19:43

I had totally forgotten that my parents used to have very limited drink receptacles. They had six crystal white wine glasses and six crystal red which were wedding presents. Everything else was a mug or cup and saucer. There were plastic tumblers from when we were children and a couple of those big plastic cups with a lid and straw that you'd get from a theme park. Dad drank beer from a pewter tankard!

When my boyfriend started coming round when I was about sixteen he was really confused why he was given his requested glass of water in a mug! He would nab a pint glass or tumbler every now and then from a pub and put in their cupboard which they still have more thantwebty years later! Mum drinks tea and maybe about one small mug of water a day.

Tbh they're not drinkers so on the odd occasion I go over for tea and have wine, it'll be in a mug but they'd never have champagne or the likes of it in the house.

I don't understand why tbh. It's just always been the case.

@IHateLegDay
At least they use their mugs for drinks...my DH uses mugs for almost everything he eats! Drives me cuckoo for some reason...he starts his day with a mug of cereal, fruit, and milk..lunch might be leftover lasagna...yep, in a mug...supper...a stew, spaghetti, or soup...yep, a mug, too. And let's not forget the mug of ice cream before bed...we have proper bowls and plates, but he's not interested...he says he likes to hold on to the handle of the mug...I suppose he has a point.
My only real issue is the food that the dishwasher can't clean well enough from the bottom of the mugs so frequently there are yucky bits left after the wash. We've had the talk about rinsing before putting the mugs in the washer, but sometimes he forgets. 🤪

Bubblyb00b · 17/07/2023 07:18

I cant stop thinking about it. So they not just done want to use glasses, they actively purge them from the house?

Is it something to do with them being against drinking, like they don't want any potential alcohol receptacles in the house? Maybe its best not to know actually.

@Sweetpea1532 your husband sounds hilarious. But he must eat small portions? Mug of cereal is not a lot?...

Spendonsend · 17/07/2023 07:22

This is almost me ... we dont drink alcohol and our house is small so storing lots of different shaped glasses for stuff just didnt seem worth it. I can confirm we have some glssses for water though.

My in laws always bring wine glasses with them when they visit.

Bubblyb00b · 17/07/2023 07:33

I live in a flat so have no space for anything. I don't have special glasses for different drinks, but I have a selection of pretty highball glasses which can be used for water, wine, whatever. I don't see it as a problem. Mugs for wine, on the other hand, are a bit weird.

This is absolutely horrifying but probably quite good for portion control!

This would be relationship ending for me. Seriously. Absolutely no need.

Sweetpea1532 · 17/07/2023 12:14

@Bubblyb00b yeah, DH is hilarious alrightGrin..but alas @Smittenkitchen , the mugs he uses are along the size of the famous Johnny Depp trial quote, 'a mega pint' sized. Fortunately, he doesn't drink mega pints of wine, though...or any wine for that matter. But, he does occasionally ( once a month or so) have a beer in one of his pewter pint mugs he purchased premaritally that take up tonnes of space in the freezer.Hmm.@Hibiscrubbed he has so many other fabulous qualities that there's no way I'm gonna LTB...he brings me mugs of coffee in bed every morning and also puts toothpaste on my brush which to me makes up for any of his shortcomings in his vessel of choice for eating. Plus, he unloads the dishwasher most days so he's the one who has to scrub out the trapped bits.GrinBrew

@Sweetpea1532 that's just absolutely insane 😂 why????

Jux · 17/07/2023 19:18

We have a million mugs and a million glasses, all shapes and sizes. This is due to dh who likes to drink each drink from its designated vessel, brandy from brandy glass, wine in a wine glass etc. He has small mugs for tea and coffee and woe betide you ifyou give him tea in a designated coffee mug!

I, otoh, don't really care. I like normal sized mugs for tea. I have drunk water from mugs (I don't generally drink other soft drinks) but also from glasses, as I do with milk. Those are my main drinks, and I'm happy with a mug or a glass. If you have a glass with a handle, as you used to get in pubs, you can easily drink tea from it. Yes, it does taste different from a glass but not enough to make iti perative to use a glass in preference to a mug.

Sweetpea1532 · 17/07/2023 21:16

I think I might be able to shed some light on the subject of mug use...@IHateLegDay how old are your Dear Parents?

I live near a very posh area ( we're poor!) When I go to posh Estate Sales I am always blown away by all the different glassware thats been dug out of top cabinets for sale...omg, white wine, red wine, cordial, champagne, high ball, low ball, martini, margarita, shrimp cocktail, pudding, ice cream, compotes, etc, etc, etc...and theres always service for 12 at least! Of course, they never ever sell any of them as who can be fussed with 24 kt lead china, plus it's toxic now! Everyone I know uses reusable cups or mugs for gatherings...don't get me started on the multiple 12 piece place setting of bone China with the gold rims...(oh yeah...those are going to fly off the display since they can't go in the microwave or dishwasher!) Just no. Although, the mugs go like hotcakes!

I was devastated when I discovered the handles of my dear, dear Queen Elizabeth II mugs had broken off in the dishwasher😭 See attached...havent been able to get rid of them yet.
