To think my parents are batshit

IHateLegDay · 08/07/2023 12:59

My parents don't own drinking glasses and never have.
Every single drink from tea/coffee to water or wine is served in a mug.
When I was growing up it seemed normal but when I moved out at 17 (I'm in my 30s now) I realised how odd it was.
I've now gone the other way and own far too many glasses for every occasion.

AIBU to think that my parents must be psychopaths?? 😂😂

Does anyone else's parents/family have odd quirks like this?

I just love having the “proper’ vessel, to me, for any drink I imbibe. It’s obviously psychological but I enjoy it so much better.
Water from a favourite kitchen glass.
Best crystal at dinner for guests.
I can’t enjoy tea from a “thick chunky” mug. I buy pretty bone china from charity shops!

I’ve just been for coffee at a friend’s place. She very kindly dug out a tea cup & saucer from the back of her cupboard for me. I really appreciated that.
We’re all allowed our idiosyncrasies. I guess that’s mine!

@Thebigblueballoon if you can fit the bottle in, then you don't have to keep getting up for refills. Really, you're saving time and time is money my friend.

Spot on. The mugs stays. 😂

5128gap · 08/07/2023 13:25

I've only got a couple of glasses as I'm the only one in my house who uses them. Family members all have their own water bottles permanently by their sides and drink from those all day. Visitors tend to have hot drinks (or refuse as they also have their water with them) As my glasses have got broken there's just been no point in replacing. I'd never drink a cold drink from a mug though.

I'm similar in that I like the drinks to be from the proper vessel but I don't need it to be china or crystal.
For my morning latte, I have proper latte mugs.
For tea, it has to be my favourite mug.
For margaritas, it's a cactus shaped cocktail glass 😂

My DM refuses to own tea towels. I genuinely have no idea how any of them dry their hands.

That's bizarre!! Does she use kitchen towel or air dry??

Same here!
I despise houseguests who use my mug 😂(separate favourites for tea/coffee/hot choc)
favourite red and white wine glasses…
not so fussed about water or spirit gasses, but 100% the vessel contributes to the taste!

cocunut · 08/07/2023 13:28

Also no wine glasses in my DM's house, as she doesn't drink wine. I think she would buy one if she was expecting a wine-drinking guest, however I'm not so sure...

riotlady · 08/07/2023 13:29

I quite like the taste of cold water from a mug to be fair

cocunut · 08/07/2023 13:29

@IHateLegDay air dry I think as she also refuses to buy kitchen roll as it's too expensive Hmm I've brought so many round but to my avail they remain in a drawer unused.. Her argument is she has a dishwasher so doesn't need to dry dishes 🤷🏼‍♀️

But what if she spills something?? I just don't understand 😂🙈

Mine are the opposite - mugs are unheard of. Glasses or china cups, for nearly everything.

cocunut · 08/07/2023 13:33

@IHateLegDay I have no idea!! I think she must have a couple stowed away somewhere secret as this has now become a "thing" in our family. She knows it irritates me and everyone else so I reckon she's doing it on purpose

Oh I've got so many questions about this 😆
How does she cook?? Like when you need to chop stuff up, wash your hands after handling meat etc, does she just stand there waiting for them to dry before moving on to the next bit?? Brilliant.

Sounds like malicious towel refusal to me!! To counter, put towels EVERYWHERE

Are they worried about breaking glasses ?

My mother is similar, and won’t have glass in a drink either, but her or her brother had a drink with broken glass years ago, and she’s taking no chances.

Glass was thinner I guess.

SoleDewyFlares · 08/07/2023 13:37

I meant, won’t have ice in a drink.

This is hilarious and bizarre. So, does she just run the bathroom and use the towels when she needs to dry her hands? If she doesn’t use kitchen towels, does she stash a toilet roll in the kitchen?! Or what?

IcakethereforeIam · 08/07/2023 13:39

I heard, I think Stephen Fry on QI, that tea tastes nicer when drunk from a glass! I don't disbelieve him but I just can't bring myself to try. Not least because I drink tea black and blistering hot. How could you do it without burning your fingers?

Cold drinks from either their container, a glass or, in a pinch, a plastic beaker. Water from a mug just feels weird.

cocunut · 08/07/2023 13:40

@Thebigblueballoon that's entirely it! She will genuinely go to the bathroom to dry her hands on the towel in there.. Honestly I'm just as confused as you are 😂

You don't fry your hands on tea towels!! Shock

You dry crockery on tea towels.

Hands are dried on hand towels!

Hollyppp · 08/07/2023 13:41

Yes your parents are weird

RiseYpres · 08/07/2023 13:41

hah!

My parents don't use shampoo or conditioner. never have. (I am 50). We had either hand soap or dishwashing soap growing up.

They are very solvent, postgrad degrees in their time, both professionals and were able to retire before the age of 55. My mother steals all the little bottles of unguents she can find when on their many cruises or staying in hotels. But she won't buy shampoo or shower gel or anything like that.

I recall having my hair washed under the garden tap as a child as being normal.

What's their hair like though? A boy from school had the softest hair ever and washed it with a bar of soap. Maybe that's the trick to luscious locks?
