To think my parents are batshit

IHateLegDay · 08/07/2023 12:59

My parents don't own drinking glasses and never have.
Every single drink from tea/coffee to water or wine is served in a mug.
When I was growing up it seemed normal but when I moved out at 17 (I'm in my 30s now) I realised how odd it was.
I've now gone the other way and own far too many glasses for every occasion.

AIBU to think that my parents must be psychopaths?? 😂😂

Does anyone else's parents/family have odd quirks like this?

My parents are weirder, for sure. When we lived in Germany, my mother collected a huge number of lead crystal glasses. All kinds, but all the same pattern. There were bloody hundreds of them. They were kept in their original boxes, in a cupboard and never, ever used.

They used mugs to drink out of, or if they had posh company, they would break out the cheap plain glasses, but never the "nice" ones. When they moved away from this area, they gave all the glasses to my sister (because giving me nice things is a waste, apparently!), so now my sister is the Keeper Of The Crystal. I don't envy her, there will be demands for all sorts of updates about their care and hissy fits if one ever gets wet!

My PIL have wine glasses and loads of crockery (some saved for best) but only a few glasses, and they're tiny ones.

After staying with them a few times I realised its because they only drink tea, wine, and maybe a small glass of fresh orange for breakfast. They never drink water, soft drinks or anything like that. Don't know if that's a generational thing or just them.

It’s not a generational thing. My Grandparents born around 1910 all had glasses of varying descriptions, as did my parents and as do I (I am likely to be old enough to be a parent of a lot of posters on here). My husband’s family also had glasses. I can’ ever recall being at a friend's house as a child/teen and been given a cold drink out of a mug. So they had glasses as well.

@JeandeServiette Oh now this is news to me?! Do people genuinely have two little towels in their kitchens and keep track of what dries what?!!!

Tea towels are often not made of towelling. They are usually thinner than hand towels. Hand towels are for handle tea towels for dishes. I was always taught it was u hygienic to mix, though I’ve never been able to work out why…

Don't you find that water just feels weird from a mug? 😅 I think it tastes different 😂

I'm your parents 🤣🤣

gemstoneju · 08/07/2023 15:17

Tbh I don't think OP's parents are as weird as women of my mum's generation, who kept a gigantic sideboard of posh cups, saucers and glasses that were never, ever used. I have to downsize her house right now and have no idea what to do with them.

My mum never drinks water. Even in a heat wave she’ll sit with a brew and complain about being hot.

She also has no pictures up on her walls. She owns her house so not a dick head landlord issue. No pictures, no art or paintings anywhere. Just plan magnolia walls throughout. Why?! 😂

I'm like your mum. I don't like water. I do drink cold drinks too, but I find tea quite cooling in hot weather. I don't have any pictures on my walls because I don't want to. Art doesn't interest me, and I know what my children look like. Precious family pictures are kept in albums to prevent fading.

BadNomad · 08/07/2023 15:21

My mum was like that too. I was raised drinking diet coke out of a mug. Having to use glasses in other people's houses was nerve wracking. I felt so clumsy.

Cucucucu · 08/07/2023 15:25

Yep I think they might be sociopaths lol but ho drinks every drink 🍺 n mugs

I felt the same!! Now I love using glasses 🍷

Makes you feel all fancy now doesn't it lol. I have nice glasses that never come out of the cupboard in case I break them. My day-to-day ones are from IKEA. 😁

Smittenkitchen · 08/07/2023 15:33

That's awful. Agree that things taste different when drunk from a mug. Very peculiar that they've binned glasses that you've bought for them!

Begonne · 08/07/2023 15:41

Shocking Op! Just shocking!

There’s an entire continent that drink out of ‘jelly jars’ 😯 I had a US room mate for a year in college who eschewed the glasses in favour of a washed jam jar and I had to sleep with one eye open. Loveliest girl ever

My own mother uses clothes pegs to reseal packets instead of food bag clips which are obviously completely different. I’ll have to name change now, won’t I?

VWRabbit · 08/07/2023 15:42

I'm severely visually impaired, "invisible" glasses are not welcome in my house 😂 It is weird though. Feels weird to not have proper glasses to offer people. But it's best if I don't have broken glass that I can't properly see to clean up every few days.

drumandthebass · 08/07/2023 15:43

Batshit

Do you have any research to say is a neurodivergent thing or do you just like throwing it around when the topic being discussed not the mn norm?

fwiw my neurotypical parents never bothered with glasses when I was growing up. My grandparents did so it wasn’t learned it was just their way.

Being fixeted on a certain type of behaviour or things or preferring certain materials or textures can be a ND thing, yes.

What I was saying though - its doesnt look like a behaviour of a psychopath.

I dont see anything wrong with pegs /better than any food bags clips I ever had/ or jam jars.

DaaamnYoullDo · 08/07/2023 15:51

I was the same till I started dating then I had to buy some nice glasses 🤣

LakieLady · 08/07/2023 14:00

I've been trying to imagine drinking a G&T from a mug, and it's so many shades of wrong that I simply can't.

My MIL only ever drinks coffee from a cup and saucer, has very few mugs and all of them small. I drink vast amounts of tea, and all my mugs are half-pints, and whenever I'm at her house I have to make endless cuppas because none of them are ever big enough.

She has glasses though, she's not a complete heathen.

Ok, I’ll kind of admit to the G&T in a mug, but I swear it’s not as weird as you think. I use my thermal cups in the summer for my evening cocktail and it’s regularly 80 F (27C) and the sun is still beating down on my favorite cocktail spot. So it’s really the only way to keep my ice from melting.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/07/2023 15:54

That would drive me mad. The thought of drinking Prosecco or a G&T from a mug makes me feel a little nauseous.

I love having different glasses for different drinks. As a wedding present with some John Lewis vouchers I bought myself two crystal tumblers, they were very expensive. They only come out at Christmas and I use them for Baileys and ice and I love them, they make more of an occasion of a drink. Same as some some champagne flutes I was given as a 21st birthday present from an elderly aunt, I cherish them.

IHateLegDay · 08/07/2023 15:56

I was given crystal wine and champagne glasses as a wedding present but they've all gone into storage now. They were sat in my glass cupboard for years, not getting used

Heh, I even have the right glass for the type/brand of beer sometimes.

I think I spent too much time in N. French/Belgian bars in my youth.

Well surely the jelly jars are just practical. We used to have cartoon decorated jelly jars that were intended to be used as drinking glasses after they were emptied https://www.ebay.com/b/jelly-jar-glasses/bn_7024908578

I like tea in a cup, or at least a bone china mug. It tastes better!

JobzaGoodun · 08/07/2023 16:11

Water from a mug tastes sweet- and nothing to do with taint or anything like that. Similar to how I can't drink tea from a mug with non-white innards- it makes the milk taste off.

And absolutely nothing can be drunk from any type of plastic glass/ vessel etc. Although to be fair, its been a long time since I was offered a drink of squash from a slightly stained/slightly scratched beaker (mum and child playgroup anyone?)

On a serious note, I did know a woman who drank alcohol from a mug, but that was cider with a shot of vodka, and she started mid morning Sad
