To think 100mph isn't routine

I'm travelling with my younger sister & her bf. They're driving up the country and are routinely doing 100mph on the motorways etc which feels overly fast to me. Context: I'm from an overseas country where speed cameras and checks are routine and most people just stick to the speed limit.

Is this the norm in the UK? If not, would you breach the peace and say anything? It doesn't help that they're continually play fighting while driving too which doesn't add to the feeling of safety...

Either this a wind up or your sister and her bf and bloody idiots and if caught goodbye driving licence.

Do not get in the car with them at 100mph the chances of them, you and the other vehicle you hit surviving are very very very slim.

Formula 1 cars are made of carbon fibre and designed to survive a crash at this speed a normal car is not and the impact would be devastating.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 08/07/2023 10:58

Tell them to stop dicking around and drive at the speed limit or let you out at the next coach or railway station so you can continue your journey under your own steam.

I drive on the M4 and the M5 a lot and although there are a few drivers driving at probably close to 100 mph, the majority (I would guess 90%) seem to be close to, or under, the speed limit.

Fatkittythinkitty · 08/07/2023 10:58

So you are in the car with them but you need to ask on here if it's normal? Look out the window, are other cars driving the same speed?

Worldgonecrazy · 08/07/2023 11:00

Definitely not routine except for dickheads. I would say maybe up to 85 but anything over that is asking for trouble. On a motorway the police will generally allow up to around 80 if you’re driving in a sensible manner, ie indicate here necessary and keeping a safe distance.

The only problem is people are extremely sensitive about driving so expect an extreme reaction if you refuse to get in the car with them or ask them to slow down.

CaptainWarbeck · 08/07/2023 11:01

Not a wind up. Yes they're obviously overtaking a fair amount of cars. Some cars seem to be doing 80-90 though.

Right how do I say something then without ruining the relationship... I've got 3 hours in the car with them today and fly home in a couple of days.

Being dead will probably put a bit of a dampener on the relationship I would have thought.

You are worried about upsetting them? Why aren't they worried about upsetting you by putting your life at risk?

Worldgonecrazy · 08/07/2023 11:03

@Gulikitti thank you for sharing that. It’s horrific. The forces on the human body, even at 50, would cause serious injury.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 08/07/2023 11:05

No that’s not normal and if caught by police or speed camera will get 6 points which last 3 years (12 points gained during that time would mean the loss of their license).
The stopping distances at 100mph are horrendous.

GCWorkNightmare · 08/07/2023 11:09

I do a lot of driving. Generally late at night because other people annoy me. Wouldn’t be unusual to find me doing 90-95 in good conditions with no other traffic on the motorway. I’d limit it to 85 in light traffic (indicated 85 is actually about 80).

In 28 years of driving I’ve never had a speeding fine or accident (my neighbour reversed into my car which was parked on my drive once but have never made contact with another car outside of that).

More concerning is the lack of space left between cars travelling at speed, middle/outer lane hogging, people not undertaking basic car safety checks (tyres and lights), inappropriate speed in bad weather etc.

tttigress · 08/07/2023 11:11

I guess driving up to 90 is normal-ish. But to be honest I have actually noticed people in the UK have slowed down in recent years. Most people don't really go over 80 these days.

I think 100mph would be a straight ban if caught these days.

GCWorkNightmare · 08/07/2023 11:15

plenty around here think it’s fine to join a motorway at about 45 with trucks doing 56-59 then having to move into the middle lane to overtake them.

tt9 · 08/07/2023 11:16

tbh even a crash at 70mph is fatal. speed of course increases the risk of accidents... but just as important are road conditions, distance between cars and care taken by the driver. I've been in cars with people driving at over 100mph and felt safe... and been in cars where drivers are driving below the speed limit and felt very unsafe. if you felt unsafe I would not get into a car with them.

OnlyFannys · 08/07/2023 11:17

The maximum I go is 75-80, I just don't see the pint in taking the risk

Mirabai · 08/07/2023 11:17

Just tell them a. You’re a nervous passenger and b. They’re going to get a driving ban so could they please slow down.

OldBeller · 08/07/2023 11:18

For motorway driving when it's not very busy, I'd say going at 85mph is reasonably common. 100mph, not so much, although it happens.

Most people slow down for the cameras because they know which gantry they're on.

Popworld · 08/07/2023 11:18

As a firm advocate of driving fast safely . Even I think regularly doing 100mph is a bit silly. Obviously depending on weather, time of day, traffic density?

Thebigblueballoon · 08/07/2023 11:19

Nope. That’s just fucking irresponsible. 80mph yes, but 100?! No chance I’d be getting in the car with them.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 08/07/2023 11:20

I'd say it's more normal than some people like to think, judging by how people seem to drive around here.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 08/07/2023 11:20

With the advent of smart motorways I see it less.
I think most people, when it's national speed limit, go at 75 to 80?
100 mph is dickish on our motorways. The risk of someone in the middle lane not seeing you and pulling into that lane is high.

WhatNoRaisins · 08/07/2023 11:21

I think some people genuinely do see it as normal but that doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Popworld · 08/07/2023 11:22

If its say 4am and dry 100mph probably not that much of an issue

Ihatepickingausername3 · 08/07/2023 11:23

I don’t generally go above 90 because my car doesn’t like it and neither do I.

I did think that if you were caught above 90 it was an instant ban though?

Münchner · 08/07/2023 11:24

Here in Germany even on the Autobahns I would only get up to 100 mph (161 km/h) in good road conditions and light traffic. British motorways are usually much more difficult to drive on, way more traffic generally and often narrower and not as well cambered. 85 mph max and only with good conditions. Anything higher is just foolish and its usually people who over-estimate their driving skills.
