Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

What about the thousands of young, single, bored white British men who already live here? Will you deport them too? Or are you only concerned about brown men?

I always wonder wtf is wrong with people that they focus on the fact that they are 'brown' rather than on the cultures that they come from that have led them to look for asylum in the first place. Like we all sit around and pretend that if you grow up with violence and rape and treating people like shit being the norm it won't affect you and your attitudes at all. But no it's their skin colour that's the most important factor.

Surely everyone's presumed innocent till shown otherwise

No, that’s for court, not for the real world. It’s why you teach kids not to go off with strangers, why women shouldn’t accept lifts from men they don’t know, why we have safeguarding in place in various situations. We do not all go around giving everyone the benefit of the doubt.

Well yes, you're right to a degree but it seems a bit off to label a group of men a risk simply because they're asylum seekers.

you already have 500 men with unknown history next to your child's school. They just happen to be in normal houses and are British. We only have history of someone if they have a criminal record. Yabu

If you don’t understand the difference between that and 500 bored young men, with no money and nothing to do, mostly from cultures who disrespect women - you need to spend a LOT more time trying to puzzle it out. Because that is not the hot take you think it is

It’s an easy and incredibly lazy way to shut down objections. Most people don’t want to be accused of being racist so if you can do that to someone it means they have to shut up and go away and you don’t have to consider their points of view at all

Wizzbangfizz · 08/07/2023 12:24

The naivety of some on this thread - people really can’t understand the fears people have of thousands of unskilled men from cultures diametrically opposed to our culture and way of life landing undocumented and unchecked on our shores and dumped next to schools?!

And I can guarantee no one on here would have an issue with families or women. I’m in favour of migration - we need it - but this shit show is untenable.

JazbayGrapes · 08/07/2023 12:24

People are funny. "We need to welcome migrants, house the homeless, build more social housing!" Ok, here they come. "Not next door to ME, are you mad?!"

It's frustrating when posters keep bringing this up as a argument.

There is a big difference in behaviour in a group, and opposed to individuals. A big group of people with nothing to do, bored and frustrated because the rivers of milk they have been expecting have not materialised, from cultures where females are seen in a different light is completely different in dynamics than your regular man next door.

Pack mentality in humans is a scary thing.

It’s not “not next door to me” it’s “not like that”.

try thinking a little bit harder about the objections. You might get there.

I've never been in a men's a hostel as part of a group of mostly over 60 women.

Maybe that's why our experiences differ.

😂 Our group were visiting to support them, not living there. I mentioned age and sex as we were hardly threatening, but even so, they were very shy and uncertain of us

DontBeAPrickDarren · 08/07/2023 12:38

Discretionassured · 08/07/2023 11:12

It was student accommodation, unused because of its run-down condition as far as I understand.

Unused because the university moved out years ago. The site was purchased by a Chinese company ostensibly as an education provision but I don’t think any education provision materialised.

Yes, it completely shuts down the discussion.

A bit like being called a Terf if you don't want men playing women's sports.

YANBU to be concerned.
The men being housed are almost certainly from countries where women have fewer rights and are not treated as well as in the UK. Depending on their country, there will be other concerns eg the age of consent, mass acceptance of child marriage.
Add in that they are bored/ sexually frustrated/ lonely and it’s a disaster waiting to happen.
Re: PPs who asked if you would be concerned about an army base instead, I grew up close to an army base and vulnerable girls at my school were definitely targeted by the badly behaved of the squaddies. The base wasn’t even next door to the school.
The way I see it there are two problems with placing this centre next to a school:

  1. large group of bored young men.
  2. cultural clashes relevant to sex.

Have the school carried out a risk assessment specific to female students’ safety?

JamSandle · 08/07/2023 12:44

As usual, it seems, the safety of girls and women comes last.

Show some kindness. If you want to move your child then do it. 500 asylum seekers are human beings. They've been through goodness knows what and are trying to make a better life for themselves.

Course they do leaving their loved ones behind. Very gullible indeed

I'm not sure it's naivety, @Wizzbangfizz. Equally possible is that some have grown pretty used to virtue signalling about this particular demographic and resent having to address the rights of groups which conflict with their choice

fizzypop100 · 08/07/2023 13:28

I would take change schools. Huge risk statistically

Please show us the statistics -that would be very helpful.

The statistics I've seen suggest that the men in the hostel are more likely to be victims of crime (possibly stirred up by the sort of nonsense that's on this thread).

You misunderstood.

It's one thing the local church ladies coming in with their little buffet under staff supervision. 🙄

Deal with these men when they're fighting over cigarettes, or who owes who money, or bored and smoking outside shouting, attracting local dealers.

Men with nothing to do, in large groups, shouldn't be placed near schools, women's refuges and places where folks are vulnerable.

TheLifeofMe · 08/07/2023 14:15

I'm amazed at some comments. I would not want 500 immigrant men next door to my daughters school. I have no issue for genuine immigrants fleeing war or persecution and coming to the U.K. But these men have left behind their families and loved ones to come here so how bad can it be. They are here for economic privileges which they know they will get.

Our local town has hundreds of male immigrants hanging around trying to chat up school girls. There man are in their late 20s. It's sick and it's weird. So I would be aghast at this happening.

JamSandle · 08/07/2023 14:20

Also for people focusing on colour of skin, you do realise the very women and girls many are concerned about won't all be white or light skinned right?

You have a very naive view
