Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

I don't think you're wrong to be concerned @chibcha , I'd refuse to send her in if I couldn't get into another school. Seriously this is not OK
There's no respect for young women

Bromptotoo · 08/07/2023 11:10

Is this a new build or just a change of use for an existing building.

If it is a change of use what was on the site previously?

It was student accommodation, unused because of its run-down condition as far as I understand.

Everyone’s in favour of open borders for asylum seekers. Until they end up in your neighbourhood.

If the government had been on top of processing claims, there wouldn't be a huge issue about where to house mass numbers of asylum seekers - they would either get the green light to live and work (pay taxes) in the UK, or they would be rejected and deported.

Instead, they are being housed in unsuitable accommodation in large numbers which places a huge strain on local resources, stirs up hatred in communities and has the potential for trouble (as uptrend- ANY group of 500 men housed in close quarters is asking for trouble).

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 08/07/2023 11:18

What about the thousands of young, single, bored white British men who already live here? Will you deport them too? Or are you only concerned about brown men?

No one said anything about deporting. And yes, if it was a hostel/accommodation for 500 white british men with unknown history, potential mental health issues,in crappy conditions, with no jobs or adequate support for the situation they are in/why they ended up there, I would have the exact same concerns.

Where in the UK do we have hundreds of single, bored white British men all living together in crowded conditions?

Nothing to do with being “brown”, several posters pointed out that they wouldn’t have any issues with 500 refugee women and children living next door.

Our kids’ school used to have refugee accommodation right next door, the back yards separated by chicken wire fence. The place housed Syrian families - I don’t remember anyone at our school having issues with it.

ilovesooty · 08/07/2023 11:21

The government's failure to deal with the issue and process asylum seekers in a timely manner is deliberate rather than incompetent.

People will be understandably concerned about situations like this but of course there's always the demographic the government is appealing to - the ones who are going to blame the woke lefty liberals.

That's what I thought from Googling but not 100% sure.

When it was used for students how many and was it male, female or mixed?

YANBU at all. We’ve got a hotel nearby that’s been taken over by the Home Office and there have been loads of problems in our village. Bored, often angry men with nothing to do living in limbo is bad news for everyone. I know asylum seekers have to be housed and this should be done compassionately and much better than it’s being managed at the moment but just barrelling ahead like this is crazy and going to stoke up fear and tension.

Same..
There have been 2 attacks on women a week after they went to the hotel, bikes stolen, fights, theft. All confirmed to be makes that are staying in the hotel.

Obviously these happen without asylum seekers. But the crime rate has risen significantly directly in the town where there are hundreds and hundreds of male asylum seekers in a hotel. The actual hotel is bordered up now, public can't get in there.

They hang around outside and beg, and really pressure you into giving them money. It's quite intimidating. I worry for the junior school girls who have to walk past everyday. It is causing problems for these girls. There was an attempted kidnapping of one of the school girls too.

The OP is absolutely NOT unreasonable to be worried. The safety of her daughter comes first over 500 males being next to the school. What fucking planet are some people on thinking it's the other way round for goodness sake.

What if it was an army barracks? Would that be fine?

Well yes.. they have an ID and have a DBS 😂

3BSHKATS · 08/07/2023 11:33

Locally, we have an unknown number of young men staying in the local travel lodge with a Tescos express Next Door and a train station nearby. Since March, there has permanently been a police car parked outside. Not sure whether it’s protecting those inside or out, but I have never known the police commit to such a presence in this area. It’s literally unimaginable.

AlwaysWantingIceLollies · 08/07/2023 11:35

Two hotels near the local park have been used to house asylum seekers. There's been nothing but harassment reports since. Young girls can't walk home without being harassed and followed by groups of young men. Young children in the park have been photographed and filmed by them, and the most recent, a young asylum seeker from the hotel has been arrested and charged for attempted kidnap of a young girl. Roughly aged 6.

Nobody says anything for fear of being branded a racist.

Call me what you like but I don't think you are being unreasonable OP at all. It would be a major concern of mine.
Same as if it was a hostel full of young white men with nothing to do all day.

But when most of these young men arrive from countries where women's rights are non existent I wouldn't expect their views on women and girls to change the minute they stepped into the country.

boatface77 · 08/07/2023 11:36

LegendsBeyond · 08/07/2023 10:57

It’s terrible from a safeguarding point of view. They’re putting the rights of these men above local children & it will all go horribly wrong.

When did those in charge ever give a fuck about the safety of working class girls in the north? Remember Rotherham, Telford etc? Nobody gave a shit and it was all suppressed.

Nobody in power cares until it starts affecting their children/the children of the elite, then something will urgently need to be done and at the moment there are plenty of rich and powerful people making a lot of money from this crisis, so it will only get worse.

Ducksinthebath · 07/07/2023 23:14

Like a camp? A camp to concentrate them in?

I can see that going down well with anybody who lives close by to such a place.

Wizzbangfizz · 08/07/2023 11:46

Out government are an absolute disgrace. I’d be sickened if this was happening next door to my DDs school. I’m quite close to a couple of hotels housing migrants and they have permanent security guards posted outside monitoring who goes in and out - hopefully you will have the same which could at least offer some level of protection/monitoring.

VisionsOfSplendour · 08/07/2023 11:49

Where are these places where 500 white men are housed together with no money no jobs no agency Little grasp of English?

Maybe we could compare like with like

Honeychickpea · 08/07/2023 11:52

Gytgyt · 08/07/2023 08:27

I think this is wrong though. You can't assume that these people aren't in real danger or living in sheer poverty they probably are living in poverty. Who told you they have paid thousands to seek asylum?

Most likely the Daily Mail.

3BSHKATS · 08/07/2023 11:58

We know the asylum seekers are allocated £40 a week to survive on, and we all know that’s a pittance. We all know that none of us would hesitate for a minute to shoplift if necessary to feed ourselves. Why any of this is coming as a shock I don’t know.

Has anybody taken them to one side and explained in their own language that we don’t sleep with 12-year-olds here ?

JazbayGrapes · 08/07/2023 11:59

You don't need to look far. Just see how people react to social housing built next to their "upmarket" properties.

purplepencilcase · 08/07/2023 12:08

YANBU.

There's no way I'd let my daughter walk to and from this school. I don't care who that offends, it's a matter of what you feel comfortable with.

Wizzbangfizz · 08/07/2023 12:15

Excellent post @Panteranoir

jolaylasofia · 08/07/2023 12:16

you already have 500 men with unknown history next to your child's school. They just happen to be in normal houses and are British. We only have history of someone if they have a criminal record. Yabu
