Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

chibcha · 07/07/2023 22:36

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

500 tough men, who’ve travelled illegally through dangerous routes to seek better lives, from cultures where women have low status and no power, living in an all-male building without work or prospects, next door to a school. What could possibly go wrong?
🤔

Self-defence classes (as PP recommended) can be dangerous in giving girls unrealistic confidence in their ability to fight off an aggressive man.

I’m surprised how many people here are urging women to “be kind” and suppress their natural fears. I say the opposite. Stop telling us to pretend it’s not dangerous. Stop telling us to put up with it.

I know the Tories say they are hard on immigration they will go in with harder proposals Labour won’t

I’m not convinced it’s a guaranteed Labour win (never write the Tories off) but they have a issues that are problematic- immigration, Starmer not knowing what a woman is (how can he be trusted to win an election) and taxes the Tories have increased taxes where Labour usually would

Brk · 08/07/2023 21:20

I agree they’ll get back in. But it won’t be because the Tories are “tough on immigration” it’ll be because Kier Starmer pissed off women on trans issues, pissed off the middle class on private school tax and everything else, failed to sell any positive vision of the future and generally looks panicked/evasive in every photo.

Pull it together Kier!

#TonyBlairIMissYou

But the Tories are not tough on immigration, numbers of people entering Britain have risen faster than ever.

Brexit was supposed to be the answer.

In my LA we've just employed 39 social workers from African countries, in my local nursing home the have just employed 59 care workers from India. Brexit was supposed to be about jobs for the British workers, preventing European staff working for less money and keeping our pay rates down.....

Goldfoot · 08/07/2023 21:34

I don't think the trans issue is as big as MN thinks it is. I work with professional, educated women and they don't "get" it. On the whole they're much more for equality and inclusivity than they are for protecting women's spaces.

HRTQueen · 08/07/2023 21:40

It’s not so much the trans issue it’s more what the press and Tories will run with. Starmer doesn’t know what a woman is how can he be trusted to know how to run the economy etc

It was a gift to the Tories Starmer needs to be more or savy

HRTQueen · 08/07/2023 21:43

I’m not sure who are these professional women you are talking to. Vast majority I know do care very much about women only spaces. Younger colleagues are more idealistic but then most of us are

Secondary school teachers and leaders.

'Our local town has hundreds of male immigrants hanging around trying to chat up school girls. There man are in their late 20s. It's sick and it's weird. So I would be aghast at this happening.'

That's absolutely revolting and I'd be furious.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 08/07/2023 21:51

I would be worried about the pack mentality groups of bored young men get. Predatory and intimidating for young women. No f…ing way my daughter would be going anywhere unchaperoned if I could not move her well away to another school. Appalling decision. The bottom line is these men often view young British women as easy prey because of the way they look/dress and the freedoms they have. Because of this the mentality is often that our girls are gagging for it. I totally accept that not all ate like this hut in a group of 500 bored unemployed young men I guarantee there will be problems.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 08/07/2023 21:53

I am guessing they are being housed far far from the homes and schools attended by the children of these decision makers???

HRTQueen · 08/07/2023 21:54

Leaders ?

I can’t say that is my experience with friends who work in all different areas. or work (NHS)

Yes, headteacher and DHs, all women. I'm banging my head against a brick wall with them.

TomorrowToday · 08/07/2023 22:38

Girls are going to get groomed and raped

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/07/2023 22:43

It's not all about sex offenders.🙄 It's about not having sufficient facilties to cope with such numbers and the cost to the community, the asylum seekers, the hospitality industry and the tax payers.

Even Priti Patel agrees.

Absolutely this. This should not be at the expense of girls and women. Too much already is.

Even the woke BBC admits that about 80% are bogus and economic migrants...should just be sent back to france immediately....we are full up and dont need any more immigration....dont care where they come from or gender !

Where are you getting this figure from? And we can't send them back to France. We could when we were in the EU, we can't now.

jolaylasofia · 08/07/2023 23:19

@NeedleFeltedFox i married an asylum seeker 21 years ago and have lived now in his country for the past 10. I don't know which cultures you mean that disrespect women? or those saying that they come from countries where it's normal to rape....which counties?? people are just spouting madness.

Are they, don't be so disingenuous. A quick Google would answer your questions. Women can't even own property in Albania ffs and your like duh, I've never heard of women not having equal rights or being treated like shit anywhere in the world. Get your head out of the clouds.

HRTQueen · 08/07/2023 23:44

My dad is from a country where woman have less rights. They are respected as mothers and no one holds higher respect than grandmothers but that doesn’t mean women are treated equally they are not

and views of western women are upsetting (not me as I’m considered the best of both worlds which is equally disturbing)

they are Christian and view themselves as progressive

DontBeAPrickDarren · 08/07/2023 23:45

next door to a school.

It’s also 250metres from police headquarters, so arguably well sited if there are problems? There’s initial and dispersal asylum accommodation in every local authority area, I can’t imagine many are that close to a police station.

HRTQueen · 08/07/2023 23:46

meant my family is Christian (mainly) the view of my family is that the country is progressive it maybe compared to some countries but it’s certainly way behind the UK

Paul2023 · 09/07/2023 00:21

Brexit was about limiting migrants from within the EU. Migrants from outside the EU were not effected as such.
This current government has lost control of illegal immigration, far more than the previous labour government ever did. And it was Labour who opened immigration centres and allowed G4S and Serco to run them. The Tories continued with it. This has been a problem for the last two decades.

I can only imagine that more of these immigrant centres will open up and the likes of Serco will make a nice profit out of it.

This is wrong. The opposite is true. More than 80% of those claiming asylum have their claim agreed because the case is genuine. More than 80% are genuine. For some reason you chose to remember it the wrong way round.

gherkeen · 09/07/2023 00:54

Two facts people overlook.

One of the main reasons illegal immigration increased is because the government took away all safe routes of applying for asylum. You can't apply from abroad anymore. You have to cross the channel.

Also, the Tories take forever to process asylum claims. That's why asylum centres are overflowing. It's not just the amount of people it's the time they spend there. Think about it. If you process 25 a week the places stay more full than if they prices 250 a week. Most asylum seekers want to work and start their life not wait months and years to be processed

The government have wilfully manufactured the asylum crisis

Why?

To provoke fear, anger and the responses seen here.

They want to use this to win the election. They manufacture a problem and fear so they can offer the great solution

It makes me sick.
