Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

Since when has the UK government gave a shit about womens safety anyway?..

Remember when they wanted to realise John Worboys. Remember when they released Colin Pitchfork? And Wayne Cousins anyone else?

I say that as a male too…

Too many women defending undocumented male asylum seekers

MichelleScarn · 08/07/2023 19:49

That's horrific, thank goodness for her neighbour. Although expect the sympathisers to either blame her, say it wasn't that bad or that anyone could have done that...

Zanatdy · 08/07/2023 19:52

I’d drive my DD, I do anyway as she needs to walk through a woods. Not worth the risk. Yes it’s a pain every day for 7yrs so I certainly would in your situation

Rotormotor · 08/07/2023 19:59

They won’t be allowed to hang around the school for goodness sake.

there are sex offenders all over the place. I think you being unreasonable.

I'd hate this too, sadly speaking out about it will get you labelled a bigot and whatever else. 500 young men without any background checks probably bored shitless in close confines from cultures with varying views on women and girls is a recipe for disaster.

God how I miss the days when expressing a sensible, reasonable view like this was OK. Today, even the truth will get you yelled and screamed at.

We seems to be getting worrying close to the glory days of the GDR, where expressing an opinion not in line with the official group think gets one in trouble.

That wasn’t the government it was the individuals parole boards making those decisions

the government challenged JW release

I think the government are wanting this backlash it’s good for the next election

it is a huge headache for any government to be dealing with now it’s the same in many countries (look at what’s happening in The Netherlands the coalition has collapsed over this issue)

how do we take in large numbers of people that are overwhelmingly young men, process their applications and manage them. The processing takes too long, not having anything to do is always an issues especially when the group is young men and understandably vast majority of the population would be rightly concerned if centres holding groups of men with nothing to do no background checks are close to their homes/children’s schools.

GrabbyGabby · 08/07/2023 20:43

If 500 young british men were uprooted from their homes, taken halfway across the planet, dumped in cramped accommodation, with no ability to work, likely shit public transport, left in legal limbo for months on end, this would be trouble. Put them beside a secondary school, and this would be trouble for the school.

Housing a bunch of men like this is a disaster waiting to happen. It does not matter what their nationality, race or religion is. This is a bad idea all round.

This is the "beauty" of it for the Tories. This has all happened on their watch yet they've managed to convince people that they'd do a better job of managing it than Labour would.

Maireas · 08/07/2023 20:45

I think that sometimes people think that the Left always want open borders. The Tories can promote themselves as trying to stem the tide.

3BSHKATS · 08/07/2023 20:45

I’m not sure they’ve convinced people. I’ve convinced a handful of people. Unfortunately, too. Many people don’t oppose it. What is it? They say only takes a few good men to do nothing.

3BSHKATS · 08/07/2023 20:45

*Theyve

Wizzbangfizz · 08/07/2023 20:51

I really do not understand the argument that there are sex offenders everywhere and who knows who is walking by a school. How can those posters not see the difference - it isn’t a race to the bottom ffs. This county is fucked.

It's not a handful though, sadly. I really do think they'll get back in on the tough on immigration ticket, which they have absolutely failed to deliver this far. 13 years 😪

3BSHKATS · 08/07/2023 20:58

I will be very surprised if they win the next election.

3BSHKATS · 08/07/2023 20:59

as will they

HRTQueen · 08/07/2023 21:04

I don’t agree they have to convince the public about management it’s more about numbers

If the Tories go in hard on immigration next election which I am assuming they will Labour will have to come back with something that shows they too wont be too soft on immigration especially that of young men

Brk · 08/07/2023 21:10

YANBU. If I were in your situation my daughter would either move school (if she wasn’t bothered by a move) or would be getting lifts to school and back.

Most asylum seekers do not come from lovely safe countries where young women are treated with respect. And when asylum seekers come over here, they do not all suddenly start being respectful to women. I’ve been groped and stalked and sworn at and had stuff thrown at me, all when I was under sixteen and all by men from the Middle East / Eastern Europe while I was trying to get to and from my school.

It’s the not knowing

known sex offenders are to some degree monitored (though you can never know what they are up to all the time) and they have conditions around them if broken they face returning to jail/secure units

groups of young men with nothing to do is always hard to manage that is more the issue

But the Tories say they're hard on immigration now. Their supporters, from a demographic that really shouldn't be Tory seem to lap it up, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

I agree they’ll get back in. But it won’t be because the Tories are “tough on immigration” it’ll be because Kier Starmer pissed off women on trans issues, pissed off the middle class on private school tax and everything else, failed to sell any positive vision of the future and generally looks panicked/evasive in every photo.

Pull it together Kier!
