Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

chibcha · 07/07/2023 22:36

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

@Swrigh1234 they come
Without passports on purpose so can't be sent back anywhere

OK, what's you're solution? We drown them like unwanted kittens?

Already said it.

Poppysmom22 · 08/07/2023 16:18

I get your concerns we have a hotel being used for this near us and it's absolute mayhem at all hours of the day and night. Shouting propositions at girls and women who use the area for jogging etc often lewd ones. People with houses nearby have raised numerous complaints and the police have been called to fires in the carpark and all night football matches.

YANBU. 500 men, regardless of any background or circumstances, statistically will include some sex criminals. 1 in 4 women has been raped/sexually assaulted - that's by UK men. So, I don't really think it matters where the men have come from, it's a risk.

Agree

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/07/2023 16:33

It's on the school to do chaperoning at bus stops around school

Schools, notoriously well funded. This solves everything.

We should welcome migrants and asylum seekers but we need the Tories to fuck off and get a government who will do it properly without holding people for years in these institutions with no progress. 500 in one is madness. Great way to get everyone to hate asylum seekers though, guaranteed bad behaviour.

Do you want to be on that rota?

You misunderstood.

It's one thing the local church ladies coming in with their little buffet under staff supervision. 🙄

Deal with these men when they're fighting over cigarettes, or who owes who money, or bored and smoking outside shouting, attracting local dealers.

Men with nothing to do, in large groups, shouldn't be placed near schools, women's refuges and places where folks are vulnerable.

I think you are misunderstanding! There was no direct staff supervision as it was in the evening (there was only one person staffing the entrance and signing in book).

It is fine to make sweeping statements of course but I am talking about my own actual experience of these men though and I'm sorry it doesn't fit the perceived image that you have.

These men on the whole were shy and uncertain, having been treated with distain and negativity by people while on the streets. A significant group ( although not all) were men who had been through the asylum process and granted leave to remain. They then end up homeless as once their asylum claim has been processed they can no longer stay in asylum seeker accommodation and they are very low priority on the la housing system.
I'm sure they are far from perfect people and that there are problems at times as there would be with any large group of people living together but these men were more likely to have problems (with anxiety, mental health, family relationship breakdown etc) than be causing them.
I'm certain that some of them will have had issues with addiction and with mental health problems. Some may have been violent or abusive in relationships even ( I don't know this as fact but it seems likely when addictions etc are in the mix). Some were on the cycle of being given help, managing to get accommodation, but not being able to maintain the tenancy and ending up on her streets again but I've not ever been aware of problems on that road (which also includes many houses, a private hospital and a primary school) and I used to walk along it regularly when I lived in my previous flat.

Maireas · 08/07/2023 16:56

Very true @BadgerFacedCoo - almost like it's deliberate.

Makes me laugh when people imagine that the authorities care. The council doesn't care enough to put up a proper fight, literally no one in power cares about you or your child.

Councils have to follow Home Office ( central government) policy. It isn't a choice.

How do we do it properly?

It's a definite choice for the Home Office. A better choice would be to process Asylum claims in a timely fashion, so @chibcha, the asylum seekers, tax payers and the hospitality industry do not have to suffer for nearly 2 years.

But this shambolic bunch of lying chancers in Cabinet can't be arsed doing their jobs.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 08/07/2023 17:27

This particular property is anticipated to be in use until 2029 so clearly Serco don’t see an end in sight to the crisis (neither is it in their financial interests to assist in ending it).

Yes, and the Home Office is a shambles, with unrealistic expectations of local councils and their budgets.

Unfortunately government departments do not work together either, so the wants of one, do not match legislation from another. For instance HO to council - ‘can you not just educate the AS children in the hotel’ - council ‘no because under DfE legislation, that would be an illegal school’!

TomorrowToday · 08/07/2023 18:19

How about we send the boats back and give those coming illegally no asylum. That will stop the crippling number in the uk.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/07/2023 18:39

@Maireas nope I'd never be a teacher as the government treats them like dirt!
But it's pretty common to protect t kids from traffic fights etc outside school, and if I was in charge of safeguarding at the school I'd organize that

Maireas · 08/07/2023 18:45

I know. I'm a teacher and do an after school duty - people are always on the main road doing bus duty. Often members of the public are rude and unpleasant to us. I'm just imagining having to deal with other problems as well.

GrassyKnolls · 08/07/2023 19:00

The Dutch Government has fallen apart due to migration issues, a general election is being called.

What will happen all over Europe is a rise of the right and I mean extremism as much as people berate the Conservatives this will go further.

Wizzbangfizz · 08/07/2023 19:01

The Martha’s Vineyard comment was spot on. Justin Welby needs to give over the churches land and wealth but wealthy affluent people this will never impact enjoy virtue signalling from the sidelines.

GrassyKnolls · 08/07/2023 19:02

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper this issue of leaving women, children and the vulnerable behind. DH said he would never leave me in those situations but he doesn’t see women as a disposable commodity and as lesser beings.
