Men’s Asylum seeker accommodation next to school

chibcha · 07/07/2023 22:36

I feel quite ashamed by how I feel but want to know if it warranted.

There has been an announcement that a 500 men’s asylum seeker accommodation is going ahead against councils decision (it was overruled on a national scale). This is Stafford btw

It will be butted up to (no gap) to my DCs school and opposite a nursery. It’s not because they are asylum seekers that concerns me. It’s the fact it’a 500 men unit, with many with no known history / criminal records/ mental state.

I work over an hour away and currently my daughter who is 12 walks to the bus etc, she also does after school clubs then walks home alone. Most parents at the school are talking about moving their kids but in reality and logistically that’s not going to happen.

I genuinely feel scared for her safety. AIBU?
Its the location of it that’s wrong and the fact the council stated issues and concerns so refused it but got overruled by the government…

I’m pretty sure they don’t want to contribute nobody does let’s be honest. However, they do want to work that’s not up for dispute. We have a lBuilder who seems to have unlimited access to labour locally. Where it comes from my do not know. But anyway they definitely do want to work.

It sounds like your projecting. I don't know anyone who doesn't want to contribute.

Really? Pretty much everybody I know pays their accountant a fortune to minimise their tax liability. We’ve been watching the Tories for the last 13 years. They’ve been great teachers.

Well I don't think I know anyone who employs an accountant, but even if people are minimising their tax liability, they're contributing to society in ways these people aren't being allowed to.

We obviously move in very different circles.

but yes, I’m sure everybody you know is a pillar of society.

These people can volunteer by the way, as far as I know. And attend courses I believe. If they need to upskill. One of my friends actually lectures asylum seeker doctors to do some sort of conversion course. I’m sure there’s lots of those options available at different levels.

As for the claim that it's only the well off ones that come, that's probably true, but that's a good thing. They're people with education and the get up and go to have achieved getting here in the first place. Imagine what could be achieved if we had them in the workforce.

Areas with high (free) immigrant populations always have the strongest economies.

You are so naive it’s ridiculous.

You think the the migrants coming on boats are highly educated people. They are low skilled economic migrants, in most cases lying about being asylum seekers. Anyone in their position would do the same so the fault does not lie with them wanting to do whatever they can to earn more.

But your cuckooland assertion that they are highly educated and that the areas they end up settling in become affluent is crazy.

kitsuneghost · 08/07/2023 15:50

Where would you prefer them OP?
Everywhere is near a school
Just not your school eh?

Then you have less a very sheltered life. Quite usual in ‘progressive’ circles.

500 strangers from different countries all forced to live together, maybe sharing 2/3 to a room what could possibly go wrong. Imagine someone fleeing the danger of being gay in their country living with others who believe gays should be killed but maybe they will put their beliefs aside and all turn out to be best mates.

Well they are safe in England from the courts.... just like that little boy who was raped in the changing rooms...

I didn't say they were highly educated, but it's been asserted here that they're not poor, which they're not. They've managed to pay the smugglers so they have accumulated means somehow.

Plus they're young men who've managed to motivate themselves to plan and complete that journey whilst MNetters wring their hands about their own young people travelling on the tube. They must have some gumption that we could use in the workforce.

frustratednomad · 08/07/2023 15:57

@TomorrowToday yes, it's not only girls we have to be concerned about. 500 young men full of testosterone with nothing to do should not be housed anywhere near children or be allowed to wander around in gangs.

Maireas · 08/07/2023 15:58

13 boats crossed the channel yesterday, 11,000 people so far this year - where should they go? How can this be managed?
No-one has an answer.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 08/07/2023 15:59

How long do people think the asylum process takes?

Maireas · 08/07/2023 16:00

Too long.

You'll probably be told their community clubbed together so they could come, but I see even mentioning that they can pay the smugglers was objected to upthread

Perhaps some believe the smugglers are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts ...? Hmm

You said they are educated. What point were you trying to make? Everyone is educated if you consider that they went to school even for a little while.

They are poor. No one who is not poor enters a country illegally. What most of them are not, is refugees. They often borrow money or sell land or house in their home countries to raise funds to pay the smugglers. They are told by the smugglers on exactly what to do and say once they land on European shores. Again, it’s economic migration.

It is dishonest and often naive ignorance on the part of people here to keep insisting they are all fleeing war. Very few are actually genuine asylum seekers. But it’s like back pain. Anyone can say they have it and it’s impossible to disprove.

What really needs to happen is for affluent countries to support the places they're coming from so escape isn't so necessary. Increasing the foreign aid budget is always a vote winner though 😆

This is especially relevant to those who believe they're all economic migrants, if we improve things in their own countries, they'd have no need to come.

That’s exactly what happens. Whole extended families chip in to get their men on these boats. Selling land, women’s jewellery etc. It’s seen as investment. Once the men get to Europe, they will start to send money back home, and eventually in a few years will get settled status and call their families over.

Anyone who says otherwise is massive naive.

My only point is that they're not useless, they've managed to get here. How many of our young people could begin to do the same?

They have ability, they're really not the street dwellers from poor countries, perhaps they're not the aristocracy, but they're definitely not the bottom rung. And we need workers, we can't fill jobs.

The average length of time is 82weeks.Shock

Thos is considerably longer than the French or Italians take, despite them getting more asylum seekers than the UK.

Maireas · 08/07/2023 16:06

You're right about workers, @Goldfoot . I saw an interview with one of the Albanian men on a C4 news report. He came across on a boat, and worked illegally on a building site. He said they all get (illegal) work straight away. He's back home now, building a family home, but plans to return.

If you lived anywhere near South London and saw the goings-on down there, you wouldn’t allow your kid anywhere near the tube alone. These gangs have little regard for human life, I’m not entirely convinced they have grown up locally.

You really are naive or on a wind up. Did you just arrive on Earth?

Do you know what happens to foreign aid? Do you even know the purpose of foreign aid. It’s a foreign policy tool, not meant for eradicating poverty. Foreign aid is given as a result of lobbying by political groups for political reasons. It buys influence for governments that donate in countries where they want to steer foreign policy. So naturally the cash ALWAYS ends up with the hands of corrupt officials.

True, they either need to be deported quickly or be allowed to work. Keeping them at taxpayer’s expense for years is a scandal. This government is worse than atrocious.
