When will climate change start affecting how much we can travel and where will be inaccessible soon?

I have not done half the travelling I wanted to do, mostly due to illness during my twenties. But always hoped I could do more travelling over the years as and when I could manage, that there wouldn't be a hard stop.

With climate change I think some places will be unavailable to visit as a tourist relatively soon, like Fiji.

Where would you prioritise seeing in the next 10 or so years?

And when will air travel become prohibitively expensive or otherwise inaccessible to the average joe?

Obviously, this is very much a first world problem (actually not even a problem, just a consideration in terms of thinking and planning) and it clearly doesn't actually matter if I don't get to see other places in the world.

The cost of getting passports for my family has largely put a full stop on holidays. Nevermind the cost of a holiday in school holidays or climate change.

I heard madagascar rainforest is on the list. I do want to visit so pushed it to next 2-3 years.

whatatime · 07/07/2023 16:48

Our 2 long hauls in the pipeline (I.e. saving to do in the next 10 years) are Canada and Japan, we were thinking of doing Canada in 2026 whilst the World Cup is on but have decided we should probably prioritise Japan instead.

Gletschers in Austria. I have pictures of my parents driving the Grossglocker Hohenstrasse in the sixties… it was amazing back then. It is so sad to see how fast the ice has melted away over the years.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/07/2023 16:56

I noted that Vietnam hit 44degrees this April, very unusual but perhaps indicative of the future for south east Asia? I’ve moved it forwards on my list.

difficultlemons · 07/07/2023 16:57

Yes let's all get on flights while we can

JamSandle · 07/07/2023 16:59

Off top of my head, Venice, parts of Australia, NZ, the cook straight islands and Pacific islands like Tonga, Samoa.

Oh I would love to visit Madagascar, and had not heard this, so thank you.

If climate change becomes that bad, holidays should be the least of your worries due to the knock on effects of migration and food supplies etc, and cramming in flight before you go is hardly going to help matters.

Yes, friends who loved SE Asia have told me to get a move on there.

What an extraordinary attitude! Climate change is destroying our planet so let's jump on as many planes as possible in the quickest possible time!

I'd like to see a bit more of the world while it is still an option.

Good for you if you don't.

Or COP vositors.

Can’t believe so many worry so much about this nonsense. Have you actually visited this ‘at - risk’ places ? All the while those who don’t watch the news all day get on. Explore the world. And worry less what you can’t control.

1 trip in a private jet or boat is the same as a lifetime to travelling for a normal person. What you do won’t make a shiney shite of difference

One of the biggest ways people could help climate change is by not eating meat. Noones doing that en masse so why should people not travel while they can? As life becomes more dystopian, damn right I'll go on holiday if I want to

This is my attitude to travel too.

I mean I limit flying where possible, but I'm fine with flying when it is still commercially available.

Soon it probably will be too expensive for us anyway.

We should all be campaigning hard to preserve the rainforests (and not buying teak furniture, cutting back on palm oil and not eating beef from S America etc) not just ticking them off our bucket lists before they're gone.

Also, there are loads of amazing places in Europe you can get to by train on holiday.

I do travel, I'm just stating facts. The knock on effects of extreme climate change will reach far beyond where you can go on holiday.

Whilst i recognise the outrageousness of this premise.

I keep thinking venice will be underwater soon and Id like my kids to see it.

Many did that for COP so all’s good with flying here there and everywhere! Yay!!

ohwhatafunday · 07/07/2023 17:18

Well yes, Captain Obvious.

Water and food scarcity will become a massive problem, and mass migration will more than likely cause varying degrees of unrest and outright war.

My taking some holidays in the intervening years, if I am lucky enough to do so, really won't affect the above in any way.

The moment our Government make it affordable to actually build a life in this country (own a home etc) perhaps people won't want to travel so much. Travelling is usually cheaper overseas (depending where obviously) than a holiday in the UK.

I admire your balls for having kids, as per your username.

I don't.

My carbon footprint is smaller than yours, I suspect.
