I absolutely adored Kefalonia.
Looking for inspiration- ideally within a 5 hor flight.
Pretty/Scenic/Romantic/Authentic/Harbour/Cobbled Streets......?

Lots of the Greek islands. Syros town, Ermoupoli, is particularly stunning with its neoclassical architecture.

Surprised Formentera hasn’t been mentioned. Even in high season you can explore and find an isolated section of beach.

Movinghouseatlast · 08/07/2023 08:17

Halki near Rhodes. Tiny though.

Venice is obvious, but really is the most beautiful place I've seen.

PrancerandDancer · 08/07/2023 08:21

Kotor in Montenegro fits the bill it is stunning.

We also love St Gilgen, just outside Salzburg

I’ve been to 95 countries and I think Scotland more than holds its own. So many beautiful areas there. Each country has its own beauty, we’re so lucky these days to be able to travel and see places!

Wow, 95 is going some. Do you travel for work?

loopsngeorge · 08/07/2023 09:07

So much of Europe is absolutely stunning. The most beautiful setting for a hotel that I've been is probably Club Letoonia in Fethiye, Turkey. Fethiye itself is lovely and is a harbour town etc but I thinknthe views you get from across the harbour at this hotel are even more stunning.

OldTinHat · 08/07/2023 09:13

Another one voting Iceland.

I went to Snowdonia last year and it completely blew my mind how beautiful it was and how much there was to do. One of my best holidays ever actually.

I've lived in Snowdonia for 30 years and feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful place ....mountains, lakes, beaches, wildlife....just perfect
Just got back from a few days in London which was great but it was so good to come back home to peace and fresh air!

Work2live · 08/07/2023 10:06

We went to Croatia earlier this year and it’s a beautiful country. Dubrovnik especially.

Also loved Santorini when we went a few years ago. The sunset literally took my breath away.

Definitely not 5 hours away, but agree with pp about New Zealand’s South Island. Just stunning.

Longwhiskers · 08/07/2023 10:08

@doingthehokeykokey i used to so I’ve done some of the west African/northern Gulf countries you wouldn’t normally go to through that. But pre kids DH would sometimes travel overland between two points eg Dar Es Salaam and Windhoek and you end up mopping a few countries up that way that you wouldn’t necessarily choose as a single country holiday destination :)

Bluevelvetsofa · 08/07/2023 10:11

Lake Garda
Venice
Split
St Paul de Vence
Baie des Anges
Alpbach

Deathraystare · 08/07/2023 10:11

Slovenia.

Want to go back!

For me it was Iceland. It was simply breathtaking, and the locals were incredibly friendly.

Yes! Iceland is gorgeous. It's a bit expensive but worth it!

TennisWithDeborah · 08/07/2023 10:17

Lake Garda
Black Forest (flew to Zurich)
Snowdonia
Split and Dubrovnik

StillWantingADog · 08/07/2023 10:21

In Europe Croatia and the Isle of Skye

i think the most beautiful place I’ve ever been is St Lucia but didn’t enjoy it that much as was so poor

as for the south of France the South East (cote d’azur) is nice but so very busy.
South West much less so and has some wild landscapes. Not necessarily “beautiful” but worth a visit.

ZZpop · 08/07/2023 10:23

Lake District away from the crowds. The Scottish Highlands.

CannedCultureTinned · 08/07/2023 10:24

Thailand
Scotland including Outer Hebrides
New Zealand
Several unspoilt places in UK

Also
Some places under water whilst scuba diving, with huge amounts of different corals & fish & animals eg Borneo & Indonesia. Incredible life that cannot be seen above the water

IVFNewbie · 08/07/2023 10:30

Jumby Bay, Antigua

Catusrusty · 08/07/2023 10:32

The amalfi coast is stunning. I loved Praiano, not touristy like positano, but delightful nonetheless. I will never forget pasta under the stars watching lightning roll over the distant bay of Salerno.

Austria is gorgeous, st Wolfgang is so picturesque. The drive over the Brenner pass down towards Garda is lovely, as is lake garda itself.

Provence is gorgeous but we found eating our super pricey. I absolutely loved the Aude area around Carcassonne. The views across the plains towards the snow capped Pyrenees were stunning.

The north west coast of Spain around Vigo is utterly breathtaking, the green peaks and white sand beaches and clear blue water.

The north coast of Tenerife where the giant landslip created the orotava valley. Standing up in the hills looking down at the lush greenery, black volcanic rocks and deep blue sea is quite something.

I've got Montenegro and lake Bled on my list as well as Croatia. I'd love to see Namibia where the desert meets the sea.

Parky04 · 08/07/2023 10:34

Another vote for Croatia. Spent a couple of months over there. Drove from top to bottom. A beautiful country.

NisekoWhistler · 08/07/2023 10:44

Tricky to decide between Venice in the winter time and Santorini.

There is nowhere on earth like
Venice, I just love it

NisekoWhistler · 08/07/2023 10:45

Ooh I forgot about st Paul de Vence too, just beautiful

UndercoverCop · 08/07/2023 10:47

If you like the harbour, cobbled streets etc try Cascais in Portugal, just outside Lisbon but on the beach really easy train link, also near to Sintra, which is stunning with a castle, a palace, amazing gardens etc

Endlesssummer2022 · 08/07/2023 12:21

Not all 5 hours:

Croatia, Dubrovnik
Jamaica, mountains (didn’t expect it to be so mountainous) and beaches
Phuket, Thailand
Scottish Highlands
Kabak Valley, Turkey

Willyoujustbequiet · 09/07/2023 01:24

ClareBlue · 08/07/2023 03:11

How did you get there in 5 hours..

It depends where you are living at the time. I was in Sydney.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 09/07/2023 02:31

The Lake District in the Autumn is hard to beat. But the Croatian coast (viewed from a yacht) and the Austrian Alps come close.
