AIBU school uniform

Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 · 06/07/2023 19:04

Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy new shorts?

The school uniform states plain Black shorts for PE but the teachers have been commenting on my child’s shorts and telling them they are not appropriate.
They are proper ‘sports’ shorts and not that it matters but they are not cheap, they’re good quality, good fit, they don’t fall down etc.
I just don’t see what the problem is and what infuriates me is that they keep telling a 4 year old rather than telling me why there is a problem…after all, it is me who is buying the uniform and not my child.

Also, are we not supposed to be building children up, not making them feel self conscious?

🤣 Yes I kind of gave up when something was going to be “outing” but hung in so I could see if the OP answered anyones questions.

I think we need to get a bottle of tequila and remove the "r" from the shorts and we'll be able to understand the OP easier.

TempestuousBehaviour · 06/07/2023 21:46

MysteryBelle · 06/07/2023 21:37

I think the shorts would be inappropriate either way because they’re very short tight cycling/yoga shorts so not to code for either a boy or a girl. Loose PE gym shorts is what the dress code is.

@MysteryBelle the op hasn’t said the uniform states a style/fit- just colour. Ours says ‘plain black shorts’ and loads of kids wear this style.

LivinDaylights · 06/07/2023 21:48

I mean it'd be easier to message the teacher on your school app and ask than post a thread here, are you expecting everyone to guess what the issue is and resolve this via mumsnet? I usually just message school with such issues, much easier.

They are black on my screen @Soapyspuds

@EmeraldFox wouldn’t they say that on the uniform list though? Ours says plain black p.e shorts- there are kids in cycling shorts/football shorts/skorts/sweatshirt material knee lengths baggy shorts/short shorts… so long as they are black it’s fine.

Tight shorts are usually worn under skirts or loose shorts, or with a leotard for gym or dance. PE shorts can be cotton or the synthetic stripy kind but they are loose on the legs and worn on their own. You could say black jersey boxers were black shorts but they are clearly not suitable for school PE!

It’s for a PE class, @TempestuousBehaviour, thus PE shorts are called for, not yoga or cycling shorts which are very different in style and fit.

Lwg87 · 06/07/2023 21:49

I think they’re fine for a 4 year old. If the girls can wear them why can’t the boys? All the 4-5 year old girls at my kids school wear shorts like this. The teacher hasn’t mentioned it because she knows they technically fit ‘the rules’. Teacher just doesn’t like them!

HateMyselfToo · 06/07/2023 21:49

I would guess you know exactly what they don't like about them but because their sports uniform policy is open to interpretation you're pretending you don't.
Use them until the Summer hols and get 'normal' PE shorts for September.
This isn't the hill to die on.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 06/07/2023 21:51

Personally I think they would be great for pe especially gymnastics etc.

However ide definitely get the cheap pe shorts instead purely because they are easier to get dried.

Don't understand why a) it's being brought up with 2 weeks left of term or
B.) Why it matters what kids wear for 2 hours a week doing pe.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/07/2023 21:52

FFS just buy the lad a pair of PE shorts like everyone else's. I feel really sorry for him.

Lovelydaytomorrow · 06/07/2023 21:55

If my 4 year old came out of school saying something about his shorts being wrong, I'd assume he meant he wanted ones like his friends

TeenLifeMum · 06/07/2023 21:56

Pe shorts are loose not tight fitting. My Dd had ones like that (and yes they’re black) in Year 6 when she and all the other girls were pushing boundaries but in Year 6 they let it slide. They wouldn’t have allowed it in the earlier years.

TempestuousBehaviour · 06/07/2023 21:56

@MysteryBelle @EmeraldFox I think the dress code would have to be more specific if they want everyone to draw that conclusion.
Based on my experience of primary and high schools (I’ve taught in a lot) if they want a specific fit/length then they say that. Same with skirts for example, if you say grey school skirt you will get a massive variety because different people have different ideas of what is a suitable school skirt- so they say grey box pleat skirt to sit at the knee or whatever.

Boxer shorts are open at the crotch so clearly not suitable.

Invisimamma · 06/07/2023 21:57

Ok, those are some weird looking PE shorts.

noglow · 06/07/2023 21:59

They look like spanx

noglow · 06/07/2023 22:00

WHERE DID OP SAY HER CHILD WAS MALE?

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/07/2023 22:01

Well they look grey but you say that's the lighting

They look a bit short to me

I buy these for dd 6 pe shorts

WHERE DID OP SAY HER CHILD WAS MALE?

I wondered that. I think people are presuming that @Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 has bought ‘girls’ shorts for a boy and think it’s a problem.

noglow · 06/07/2023 22:00

WHERE DID OP SAY HER CHILD WAS MALE?

She didn't. But I wouldn't say those are PE shorts for a girl or a boy so it changes nothing.

@MysteryBelle @EmeraldFox we also have a lot who wear these or a cotton version. These aren’t loose and are cycling shorts but they work well for p.e.

EmeraldFox · 06/07/2023 22:07

Many for younger children aren't. Or how about these? They look similar to what the OP posted to me.

LolaSmiles · 06/07/2023 22:07

This thread is a perfect example of why some schools either end up writing an endlessly detailed list of ok and not ok features (because without it instead of buying a bog standard pair of pe shorts, parents buy lycra yoga hotpant style shorts), or they end up going single supplier. It's annoying for all the parents who use common sense.

They look like underwear like modesty shorts yoga knickers type thing

I thought this too.
