AIBU school uniform

Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy new shorts?

The school uniform states plain Black shorts for PE but the teachers have been commenting on my child’s shorts and telling them they are not appropriate.
They are proper ‘sports’ shorts and not that it matters but they are not cheap, they’re good quality, good fit, they don’t fall down etc.
I just don’t see what the problem is and what infuriates me is that they keep telling a 4 year old rather than telling me why there is a problem…after all, it is me who is buying the uniform and not my child.

Also, are we not supposed to be building children up, not making them feel self conscious?

“Too outing” means “cycling” on MN.

Oh very good. Very very good. Grin

We had this at my sons school as they prefer the striped black sports ones you get from most supermarkets. Unfortunately my son is in adult size clothing and very tall. Grown adults don’t like to wear PE school shorts 😆 His teacher kept saying to him he needed the plain striped ones so I had to go to her and point out they don’t do them in his size and he has plain black shorts on, what’s the problem 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s not the olympics, it’s just PE 🤦🏻‍♀️

Up to age 15-16 here if that helps! https://www.marksandspencer.com/unisex-sports-shorts/p/clp60101959#intid=crosssell_joinedline_T935253_P60274070

M&S

Unisex Sports School Shorts (2-16 Yrs)

Created with comfort in mind, these football shorts come in a regular fit with an elastic waist for easy pull-on wear. Available in two neutral colours, they will match with a variety of team colours and get children ready to be a champion on the pitch...

Post a picture of them and let's see what the fuss is about. I work in a school.

I really don’t see anything about these shorts that changes by being tall and slim or short and fat. you can see that the amount of material on the leg proportional to the crotch area is tiny. They are barely pass the bum on any height.

Yes, if you have a tall slim child and size down in rugby type shorts it would still be fine, just more leg below the shorts. It's still the same length inseam. Likewise, these shorts would be too short to wear on their own on any child.

NewNovember · 06/07/2023 21:14

Yeah they are not suitable just buy shadow stripe about £3.99 with free p and p on eBay.

Allhailkingcharlie · 06/07/2023 21:15

I see no problem with them. They've asked for plain black shorts and that's what you've put him in. Wait to be approached, or approach them and ask what's wrong with them.

Those are cycling type shorts/yoga shorts/gymnastic shorts, they are NOT what are classed as PE shorts. Buy the proper shorts and stop moaning.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 06/07/2023 21:18

But they're PLAIN BLACK SPORTS SHORTS

Not grey, lycra too-short cycling shorts.

Shorts shorts shorts

MsMoody · 06/07/2023 21:21

Boys wore shorts like those when I was at primary school 20 years ago 🤷🏻‍♀️ Can’t see the issue!

TimeToMoveIt · 06/07/2023 21:22

Regardless, either the school or the teacher are shit. They should not be bringing it up with a 4 year old

Soapyspuds · 06/07/2023 21:28

School requests

  • black
  • shorts
OP buys
  • grey

Do they cover the bum? They look like pants.

ChristmasKraken · 06/07/2023 21:32

Have you checked they still fit him? At our school the P. E. kit only comes home at the end of term and I realised at sports day just how very small DS's kit now was on him... If your child has grown, those might be very tight/uncomfortable... (and would explain why it's only coming up as an issue now since presumably your child has been wearing these at least all this term..)

Just an observation but why is everyone assuming the child is a boy?

The OP hasn't clarified whether they have a son or a daughter as far as I can see?

MysteryBelle · 06/07/2023 21:35

Here is a photo of the shorts…

So you’ve put your son in grey, tight, very short, girl’s yoga/cycling shorts.

Those are not anywhere near boy’s plain black PE shorts. The reason there are boys shorts and girls shorts generally is that they are made to fit the body anatomically. So it makes no sense that you are putting him in girls shorts on purpose plus it’s against the dress code, they’re not PE shorts at all. If they were girls shorts but loose gym style then you’d be fine, but you didn’t do that.

You're trying to skirt (no pun intended) around the dress code by claiming that they’re black (debatable) and plain. Op, they have to be the loose gym shorts meant for PE. Very simple. Not tight and very short, ridiculous. The fold over band gives them the look of maternity yoga shorts too 😂

I think the shorts would be inappropriate either way because they’re very short tight cycling/yoga shorts so not to code for either a boy or a girl. Loose PE gym shorts is what the dress code is.

They are not black and they are girl's shorts.

swimsong · 06/07/2023 21:37

They are not black and they are girl's shorts.

So what if they're "girl's" shorts? I can't see that op has stated the sex of the child?

TempestuousBehaviour · 06/07/2023 21:42

EmeraldFox · 06/07/2023 20:12

Those are for gymnastics or for wearing under a dress, they likely meant loose rugby style.

@EmeraldFox wouldn’t they say that on the uniform list though? Ours says plain black p.e shorts- there are kids in cycling shorts/football shorts/skorts/sweatshirt material knee lengths baggy shorts/short shorts… so long as they are black it’s fine.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 06/07/2023 21:43

These are standard school PE shorts. And only £3.50

Grumpypupster · 06/07/2023 21:44

You really need to speak to a teacher about this.
Yes they're shorts
Yes they're plain
Yes they're black.
(But imo they do look very short for school shorts.)

If the school are going to say certain shorts aren't suitable then they should really clarify the type of shorts, e.g plain black football shorts, plain black cycling shorts to the knee, etc etc

GoneSeaFishing · 06/07/2023 21:45

They look like girls modesty shorts and nothing like boys sports shorts at all.
