Dishwasher salesman pestering. AIBU?

I am absolutely sick of him constantly at the door pestering everyone including the elderly he comes over once a day sometimes and has been to this house at least twice this week and others also.

I think this is bordering on harassment but DH says he is just doing his job and say no politely. Some neighbours have complained and also some are elderly and vulnerable and should not have to put up with this on their doorstep. I cannot think of any reason why this is necessary but do not know who to complain to to stop him. Does anyone know who I report to?

like o said, I am so annoyed by it all but DH says it is fine so I am not sure aibu?

@tt9 😂😂😂

tt9 · 03/07/2023 20:22

and don't even get me started on the significance of washing machines....

I am a Muslim and can confirm dishwashers are indeed a Muslim thing... especially associated with Eid. We gather around it every Eid (as others might around a Christmas tree) and exchange presents, which must then all be washed (regardless of what they are).

Sounds no worse than poaching salmon in the microwave.

wutheringkites · 03/07/2023 20:23

So interesting to learn this. My FIL is Muslim. I normally send him dates, baclava or nuts for Eid, but might switch to a box of Finish Quantum next time.

Moveoverdarlin · 03/07/2023 20:23

I can’t remember the last time a salesman tried to sell something on the doorstep. Maybe 20 years ago, more than that actually. I don’t think he’s legit.

😂😂

I’m intrigued by this (though I’m not Muslin so that probably explains it).

I occasionally get people calling to my door with a bag of dusters they’re trying to sell.

Does the dishwasher salesman have a range of dishwashers with him for demonstration purposes?

@tt9 @wutheringkites OMG- I nearly choked on my drink reading your posts 😂

If he returns tell him 'You've been here more than once and been told no. If you return again I will call the police and report you. One refusal is enough from a customer'.

I might add 'You are on CCTV'.

Ooohhhh, not CCTV!!!! 😱😱😱

Kingsparkle · 03/07/2023 21:15

@BlueLiquid - they are called Nottingham Knockers. It’s a scam if you google

Irridescantshimmmer · 03/07/2023 21:15

I totally sympathise with you here, they can be persistant. I live in a flat and when the front communal door was being installed, sales people were all over the building I live in like a rash.

I have attached an image of the sign I purchased online, which is on my front door atm. They are not supposed to be bothering people with these signs on their doors.

In the previous 5 or 6 years since this sign has been on my door, I was only mithered once by a sales person who ignored the sign and knocked. I just told her ( politely ) there is a sign on my door, she jumped back, got a fright, apologised and left. 😁

It has made my life easier.

@Irridescantshimmmer but were any of them selling dishwashers (actual dishwasher machines not just dish cloths)

This thread is absolutely hilarious, funniest thing I've read in ages

huntingcunting · 04/07/2023 10:56

Do muslims really get dishwashers and dishwasher tablets at Eid?
So unfair. I'm a Catholic and we get nothing like that.

Reminds me of when I was a kid, about 8 or so, and had two Jewish friends. I came home one day and announced I wanted to become a Jew because they got loads of days of school for their festivals and also the food sounded sooooo good. My Mam said I would need a better reason than that to convert.

FiveShelties · 04/07/2023 11:00

Does he bring a sample with him?

Kingsparkle · 04/07/2023 11:05

I like the idea of Hindus gifting fridges on Divali, Jewish people gifting washing machines for Passover and Christians gifting microwaves for Easter etc 😂

TheCatterall · 04/07/2023 11:18

I’d let a local active councillor know that you are concerned about door step selling to vulnerable residents as well as the harassment aspect.

I’d also consider contacting the police/local pcso so they are aware. Quite often these are folks that are in some kind of scam.

Do you feel confident enough to tell him the police have been informed or that you find his calls harassment and to stop?

MrsClatterbuck · 04/07/2023 11:31

I would contact the police. My mum when alive attended a meeting for elderly people on different things including a talk from the police regarding safety and security of their homes. She was was given a notice for her door to say no cold callers.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2023 11:38

I had a double glazing saleman come to my house once and refuse to leave unless I signed an agreement. So I had him removed from my house by the police. It was Everest double glazing.
Then sent the police report to his company.
