Ripped passports during argument, how can I get it replaced?

I ripped up mine and my kids passports during a major argument. I know I was stupid and foolish but I wanted to permanently do something that I couldn't undo once things went back to normal and gain some kind of power. I dont really know how this did it for me but its done now.

How can I get them replaced?

Online information about damaged passports is for minor damage such as torn pages or water damage.

Do I send them off as damaged and write that I ripped them up? Is that a crime?

If your relationship is driving you to do things like this, that really isn’t normal or okay. I’m sure you’ll be able to get them replaced without too much hassle but as others have said you need to do some serious reflection on the state of your relationship and your behaviour. If you want to leave what’s stopping you?

Yes but replacing them I have never done, I have renewed a lot and just looking online it days that they can check whether they looked tampered with if they don't have slight damage.

I even read the .gov notes they provide for the passport office. I just posted because I wanted to know if they would replace passports that were obviously ripped up vs minor damage that I'm guessing they mean by 'damaged'. I also wasn't sure if it was some kind of offence to destroy a passport.

Not much detail was given in the Whitehaven news in 2019, but David Agnew aged 35 was fined £350 for destroying his own passport.

In law, British Passports remain the property of HM Government.

I always thought british one is gov property. My first nationality one is and they werenotbestpleased about Home office taking it for up to 6 months when processing residency...

I don't see what was drip feedy, I only mentioned that 3 were about to expire as someone wrote about trying to get them done for the summer.

Also because it wasn't about the money as I would be paying for renewal anyway.

This happened in April and I have only started to think about getting them sorted now, they are in a box in my bedroom.

I am the one who books all of the holidays and pays for most of it, he might pay airport transfers. When I'm in a good mood I could search and find a good deal then book and sort everything out afterwards, leading up to the holiday I could regret it but since I paid out so much I would have to push through.

At the time I was thinking about my future self doing this. My mind felt clear like I had smelt vicks but I knew that he would never leave and I would slink back and that the hassle of sorting passports that were torn up would put me off.

I'm in a better place now, I know what I did was extreme but like I said 15yrs of marriage and I havent thrown a cup or hit a wall or anything like that.

You say you ripped them up for control - is your DH threatening to take kids abroad and are you scared?

Nothing indicates that, just an out of control temper!

This is what I was worried about, I thought that they officially belonged to the government or something like that.

But why not leave him instead?

cravingmilkshake · 02/07/2023 09:12

I had a mother like this. Please go get some therapy , just for your children's sake .

I also went into therapy almost 4 years ago when I had my first child because I didn't want to do the same to my children. I'm still there now. Do it for you and them.

nancy2022 · 02/07/2023 09:29

People saying passports get damaged is different. I thought you had to send it back?

A ripped passport will not look like a dog chewed it.

I'd say it's impossible for an adult to do without scissors so they won't believe a toddler or child did it.

garfieldeatscake · 02/07/2023 09:32

wondefulusername : 'Well you've certainly made up your mind about who the victim is in the relationship, haven't you?

It doesn't sound as if the OP was 'pushed' into anything given the scant information provided.'

As you say yourself op has given scant information, so you and I have absolutely no way of knowing what caused op to react the way she did.
I worded it to give two possible options (because, if this is genuine, then there are only two options, either op did this of her own volition due to internal pressure 'went' should indicate that, or she reacted as a result of external pressure where I used 'pushed'.) see you've completely ignored one of them, in your own interruption of events and to fit your own narrative....which strangely enough is what you accused me of doing.
I think it's clear though, that this is not a healthy relationship, and I think people calling op 'unhinged' is a shitty thing to do. But then I don't get off on sticking the boot in, when it's clear this is an unhappy situation.

It states inside the passport that it remains the property of the Crown and states a criminal prosecution may be brought if the passport is subjected to unauthorised use or activity by the holder or other persons.

It also states that theft, loss or destruction should be reported to the local police and HM Passport Office. This bit is under "Holder's Responsibility".

Unauthorised activity could well include ripping or cutting up a passport.

Doesn't make sense, she wouldn't have been able to book a summer holiday with passports expiring in August. I've reported the thread anyway.

why on earth have you reported thread?

DownNative · 02/07/2023 09:49

CharlotteRose90 · 01/07/2023 20:39

The passport office won’t care you don’t need to contact them. Just fill in the forms saying they’ve been lost and pay for the replacements.

Incorrect.

The notes inside the passport under "Holder's Responsibility" states that in cases of loss, theft and destruction you should report it to the police and HM Passport Office.

If you are worried about above repercussions you mentioned, why do this clearly impulsive action in the first place? Seems you have now caused yourself further stress by actively going looking for above info you mention.

Porageeater · 02/07/2023 10:02

What you seem to be talking about is that you were trying to prevent a future impulse, booking a holiday, by carrying out an act which you now recognise as impulsive and fairly extreme . You are in a better place now but what happens the next time you are not and will you control impulses then? You would do well to try to get some support whether GP, counselling, relationship guidance or whatever. I hope you can stay in the better place.

With the passports you should just follow whatever pathway they have for damage and not lie on any of the questions.

nancy2022 · 02/07/2023 10:11

I really wanted us to split and I knew that the argument would calm down and he would try to make things normal again and I would cave. I did it because I knew that I couldn't undo it.

But you can undo it as you are asking how to?

Have you told your husband?

Mine is always abroad for work so my god would he go mad.

jellyminelli · 02/07/2023 12:08

Eh? Since when do you need a passport to book a holiday? 😵‍💫

Well Op obviously thought she did hence ripping them up!

I would assume most people don't book holidays before having valid passports so they don't have to do sad faces in Daily Mail when they end up stuck and not going?

Hyppogriff · 02/07/2023 14:18

What a strange thing to do. I mean you just need to follow the guidance from the passport office to replace damaged passports obviously

GodSaveTheClean · 02/07/2023 14:22

NutellaNut · 01/07/2023 20:21

Apply for new ones and say they were damaged and just pay the replacement cost. However, good luck getting a new one in time for the school holidays. There’s typically a 10 week waiting time at the height of summer.

We got 2 renewals and one new passport back within 2 weeks of applying.

I highly recommend the photo booths that upload the image direct to the Passport Office.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 02/07/2023 14:30

Really doubt the passport office will care. Just make sure you tick the Replacing because Damaged box and send all the pieces back.

It can take up to 10 weeks for a replacement passport, although I have just done mine much quicker than that

Get some help for this anger. Such a daft (and expensive) response to an argument

Anon1612 · 02/07/2023 14:31

I dont get it..during these arguements you want to leave husband but rip yours and kids passports up-isnt that a sure way to stay?

And also very glad for the choices I made in a husband. Seems like you get some crazy partners out there.

I do hope you mean the OP!

Yes definitely meant OP.
