People who leave less than 5 star reviews on Vinted

So until the last couple of days everything I've sold has been given 5 stars. Then the last 2 days I've got 4 out of 5 twice and it's really annoyed me! 1 gave me 4 because "dont believe it's new without tags" fair, except I didn't say it was. I listed it as "very good condition". The other one says "item as described" and gave me 4 out of 5. Now I realise it really doesn't actually matter but I'd always leave 5 stars personally unless there's a problem (which there wasn't - both were marked as OK and I've been paid out) so what I'm wondering is whether I'm too generous with my reviews. Would you always leave a 5 star if everything is ok? Or would you downgrade without stating a reason?

I bought something. The seller had an issue with the postage label, cancelled the sale and relisted it so I could buy it again. She gave me four stars even though she admitted none of the issues were my fault! Luckily all my other reviews are five star so not really an issue but it still annoyed me. I think you’ve been unlucky with stingy raters. I would only knock a star off if I had a reason to. Have you replied to the first review and said it wasn’t listed as new?

Sallywallywoowoo · 29/06/2023 21:02

Yeah I did. But I'm still irrationally annoyed. It was a lovely dress that had been worn twice that cost about £70 and I sold for £5. Honestly I only bothered to sell it so it wouldn't end up in landfill. GAH!

I've only given less than 5 once when I was really pissed off about the condition of the clothes (and I use vinted loads).

Gymmum82 · 29/06/2023 21:07

I leave 4 stars usually when it’s taken ages to be posted. If it’s been more than a week you’re getting 4

ichundich · 29/06/2023 21:08

A seller randomly gave me 4 stars even though I paid promptly and the couple of messages we exchanged were normal and polite. Really annoyed me!

LadyInBread · 29/06/2023 21:09

One of the weirdly annoying aspects of the perma-review culture that's evolved, is that 5/5 has become the default and anything less is seen as an insult.

It gives no space to recognise the truly exceptional.

steff13 · 29/06/2023 21:10

They need to explain why they left fewer than 5 star, IMO. I was just looking at a pair of shoes online that had one review with one star and no text. 🙄

But I don't expect an article of clothing to be "truly exceptional." I expect it to be as described in the ad.

JMSA · 29/06/2023 21:13

I ALWAYS give 5 stars, unless there has been a major issue. As a result, the vast majority of sellers get 5 stars from me. It wouldn't occur to me to deduct a star for no reason!

Interested in what you’d class as a “truly exceptional” Vinted seller! Surely if the item is as described and sent in reasonable time there’s no reason to give a lower rating??

Fightyouforthatpie · 29/06/2023 21:15

If 5 stars is the expected norm, surely it would be easier to have a 1 or zero star rating system since people seem to think anything less than 5 is crap?

LaJolieMuse · 29/06/2023 21:17

Yeah I had someone give me 4 stars and write 'great seller' or something. It was weird.

I have hundreds of 5 star reviews and I'm secretly very proud of them Blush

DyslexicPoster · 29/06/2023 21:18

It's not like ebay so low stars dint count as much. I'm still 5 stars but don't have consistently 5 star reviews

Less than five stars doesn't mean something is crap. But it might mean that the sizing runs small (so I need to size up) or something like that.

NannyGythaOgg · 29/06/2023 21:24

I know it's not how most people work BUT to me 4 stars should be for everything as good as should be expected and 5 stars should only be awarded for exceeding expectations. I do know that is not how most people view it.

When I am looking for reviews I first look at 3 star reviews - then 4 and 2. I rarely bother with reading the 5 or 1 stars

Paq · 29/06/2023 21:29

You need to unclench. It matters not a jot. In fact it’s entirely meaningless. If you were a Michelin starred chef or an Oscar winning actor and a critic wrote an unfair review then you might be justified in mild annoyance. As it is you are just a woman making room in her wardrobe. Carry on with your day with no interruption to your happiness.

If we were talking about book reviews I would agree with you. But I don’t need Vinted sellers to exceed my expectations, just to meet them. So I’m generous with my stars on Vinted. Not so much on Goodreads…

mastertomsmum · 29/06/2023 21:32

4 and 5 stars both mean excellent, 3 means good, 1 and 2 not so good

BCCoach · 29/06/2023 21:32

I don’t usually leave reviews for anything but surely on a 1 to 5 star system, 3 stars would mean “service as expected”?

This.

I just rarely review at all when it's an individual being reviewed. I'm very reluctant to give a top score and I know unreasonable managers and platforms consider anything less than top a fail. I keep my reviews to products.

usernotfound0000 · 29/06/2023 21:36

I sold an orchard kids game. I was given 3 stars - they had based the review on the standard of the game (not the condition, just the fact that it was only an ok game!) I didn't make the damn game and there are reviews on Amazon if you want to check if it's any good first! I was fuming, over 100 reviews that are 5 star and then that 1!

GHxx · 29/06/2023 21:36

I have the same problem on my little Etsy shop. I’ve had all 5 star reviews then only two 1 star reviews because Royal Mail didn’t deliver their parcel (which was dispatched on time). They were then fully refunded and I lost the stock as well as the cost of the postage (and haven’t even bothered chasing it up with Royal Mail for the money back because it’s more hassle than it’s worth)! But for someone to lose the price of postage, stock and give you a full refund.. not to mention the time they have spent actually doing your order, for you to be fully reimbursed and yet think you will just give them a 1 star review anyway and pull their average down when they have hundreds of 5 star reviews 🤦🏼‍♀️ Some people just enjoy the power of giving a review I swear 😂

Toffeebythesea · 29/06/2023 21:37

I usually leave 4 stars as standard. 5 stars if they've really gone out of there way or the item is exceptional quality, less if something is wrong.
I had no idea this would be viewed negatively.

LadyInBread · 29/06/2023 21:37

That sounds adequate. I just don't think 5/5 is an adequate score. For anything, not just Vinted.

Exceptional would be the item arriving ahead of expected time. Packed well - maybe with consideration for eco packaging. Washed and pressed (if worn) and folded nicely.

If everyone gets 5/5 for just delivering what they say they will, there is no score left for anyone who goes above and beyond.

Now obviously not everyone thinks this way and many will 5/5 by default. That's fine. But when you then get sellers getting irked by a score a buyer has given believing it to be fair - that's when reviews get to be a bit if a mess. Again, with everything and not just Vinted.

Like a seller thinks they are owed not just the money but also a 5/5 by right. What validity is there to the scoring system if buyers feel they must just give 5/5 or risk insulting someone.

Anyway that's just how I view it.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 29/06/2023 21:38

On vinted people always give 5 stars if everything goes smoothly. Only anything less if there’s an issue and are unhappy about something.
I wouldn’t give someone 4 stars on vinted for ‘excellent’ as said above. 4 stars would mean there’s an issue such as item not as described. So, yes op I agree with you.
