People who leave less than 5 star reviews on Vinted

Sallywallywoowoo · 29/06/2023 20:52

So until the last couple of days everything I've sold has been given 5 stars. Then the last 2 days I've got 4 out of 5 twice and it's really annoyed me! 1 gave me 4 because "dont believe it's new without tags" fair, except I didn't say it was. I listed it as "very good condition". The other one says "item as described" and gave me 4 out of 5. Now I realise it really doesn't actually matter but I'd always leave 5 stars personally unless there's a problem (which there wasn't - both were marked as OK and I've been paid out) so what I'm wondering is whether I'm too generous with my reviews. Would you always leave a 5 star if everything is ok? Or would you downgrade without stating a reason?

I don’t usually leave reviews for anything but surely on a 1 to 5 star system, 3 stars would mean “service as expected”?

Exactly! Grin

Interested in what you’d class as a “truly exceptional” Vinted seller! Surely if the item is as described and sent in reasonable time there’s no reason to give a lower rating??

That sounds adequate. I just don't think 5/5 is an adequate score. For anything, not just Vinted.

Exceptional would be the item arriving ahead of expected time. Packed well - maybe with consideration for eco packaging. Washed and pressed (if worn) and folded nicely.

If everyone gets 5/5 for just delivering what they say they will, there is no score left for anyone who goes above and beyond.

Now obviously not everyone thinks this way and many will 5/5 by default. That's fine. But when you then get sellers getting irked by a score a buyer has given believing it to be fair - that's when reviews get to be a bit if a mess. Again, with everything and not just Vinted.

Like a seller thinks they are owed not just the money but also a 5/5 by right. What validity is there to the scoring system if buyers feel they must just give 5/5 or risk insulting someone.

Anyway that's just how I view it.

You’re right in many circumstances, but sometimes you just have to go with the culture of the site you’re using. I don’t want to mull over whether someone has gone above and beyond how much they compare to other sellers I’ve experienced, it’s a waste of my time, I just give five stars unless there is a specific issue, job done, move on. If you want to put thinking time into your ratings then go for it.

I find the vinted ‘Find out what user346 thinks of you’ Vaguely threatening.

but yes 5 stars unless the person is tardy or cunty

Me too!

Posted same day and delivered in 3 days, someone said "exactly as described " then gave me 4 stars. I messaged to ask how I could have done better but they didn't reply.

One of the weirdly annoying aspects of the perma-review culture that's evolved, is that 5/5 has become the default and anything less is seen as an insult.

It gives no space to recognise the truly exceptional.

Can there be “truly exceptional” when it comes to Vinted? They bring the stuff over to your house in a helicopter and pay you to take it?

Tanfastic · 29/06/2023 22:03

LaJolieMuse · 29/06/2023 21:17

Yeah I had someone give me 4 stars and write 'great seller' or something. It was weird.

I have hundreds of 5 star reviews and I'm secretly very proud of them Blush

Yeah I've had this. Can only conclude that item didn't fit her so she was pissed off.

That's the thing with Vinted though, you take that risk it won't fit....but you just resell, get your money back.

That all makes sense. I just don’t think I would ever expect an individual selling their unwanted items to go above and beyond therefore wouldn’t hold back that fifth star if the service was merely fine. My expectations if buying from a business would be different.

I also think speed of delivery is an odd thing to judge the seller on. If the item arrives ahead of the expected time that’s down to the courier (which is chosen by the buyer!). I once had an item get delayed by over week. Actually assumed it had got lost but it arrived in the end. I didn’t mark the seller down for it. She had dispatched it promptly, it was totally out of her control after that.

Fawful · 29/06/2023 22:28

Seems to me that people who give fewer than 5 stars misunderstand the point of ratings. The stars aren't meant to judge a performance, but to indicate to other users whether they can buy or sell with confidence.
You're meant to leave 5 stars when the buyer/ seller can be trusted,it's a trust rating, not a blooming performance... Fewer stars pretty much mean 'mh, if you can, try to find another seller selling the same stuff, it might be better than this one'...

onthenightfeed · 29/06/2023 22:38

See I was having a conversation the other day about how I find it funny that people take the time to leave a review themselves when it was just a standard transaction, when Vinted gives you an automatic 5 stars once 'everything is ok' has been selected. I'll only give a specific personal review if the buyer/seller has particularly gone above and beyond like posting it literally immediately, or once someone packaged the item just beautifully wrapped in tissue paper with a little note!

if it was a simple click / buy / sell / post / receive transaction, no way am I wasting time going in and physically reviewing them. Automatic all the way!

Moraxella · 29/06/2023 22:39

I received some clothes completely covered in car hair and still gave 5 stars because that’s what’s expected and I didn’t want the hassle or to offend 😬

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 29/06/2023 22:42

NannyGythaOgg · 29/06/2023 21:24

I know it's not how most people work BUT to me 4 stars should be for everything as good as should be expected and 5 stars should only be awarded for exceeding expectations. I do know that is not how most people view it.

When I am looking for reviews I first look at 3 star reviews - then 4 and 2. I rarely bother with reading the 5 or 1 stars

How do you exceed expectations as a Vinted seller. The item is as described and posted within the expected time...that's as good as it gets. I mean sometimes people chuck in a packet of haribo or a shiny sticker, is that exceeding expectations?!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 29/06/2023 22:42

I leave two types of review:

5* for OK transaction, not too many lies about condition

1* for total fuckwits who have lied through their teeth.

I hate the fact most sellers don't bother to leave feedback for buyers.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 29/06/2023 22:42

swimminginthesun · 29/06/2023 21:30

If we were talking about book reviews I would agree with you. But I don’t need Vinted sellers to exceed my expectations, just to meet them. So I’m generous with my stars on Vinted. Not so much on Goodreads…

But you're screwing over an individual seller in both cases. In the case of the book, they're probably only making £1.20 or so for the privilege of your three or four stars bringing down their review average. There's a real person who put a lot of work into that book project, why do you think it's fine to screw over an author but not someone who just took a photo of a shirt and posted it to you?

TheFrogAteMyHomework · 29/06/2023 23:01

Ooh, this is a weirdly fascinating thread.

I've been buying for a while and just started selling. As a buyer, I would default to 4 stars to be polite and save the 5th star for people who dispatch immediately or answer a question, agree to bundle, or something else.

You get a window for sending off your item and it is 'exceptional' as far as these things go if a seller actually posts on the same day or next day (as opposed to five days letter). That's probably my main 5* thing - sending the item immediately.

The other way around, it's obviously better to confirm everything is good straight away and not three days later.

TheGoogleMum · 29/06/2023 23:05

I gave a 4* once because a t-shirt had a name on that they hadn't told me about but it was a bundle of stuff so I'd paid hardly anything for it.
I got a 4* from someone and I've no idea why they didn't mention any dissatisfaction at all

mastertomsmum · 29/06/2023 23:06

Toffeebythesea · 29/06/2023 21:37

I usually leave 4 stars as standard. 5 stars if they've really gone out of there way or the item is exceptional quality, less if something is wrong.
I had no idea this would be viewed negatively.

I think this is the norm. 4 stars is a really good review, 5 is above and beyond

Pristine, pressed, amazingly packed and they send you an extra message to check all ok. Otherwise 4 because 4 if it was an A Level would still be an A*

I’m not screwing anyone over, don’t be ridiculous. I’m leaving an honest rating.

My point is that there’s not much scope for going above and beyond when you’re selling unwanted items. You just need to send the item you say you’re going to send. That’s it. A book is totally different. I’d only give five stars to a book I felt was truly exceptional. Seeing that someone else had rated a book three or four stars wouldn’t put me off reading it so I highly doubt my star ratings have ruined any writing careers. Over inflating book reviews is actually quite damaging. Have you never heard people say a book was overhyped? Books with multiple five star reviews are often disappointing because expectations are so high.

Cripes, what language, are you a teenager? The C word is anti women and not in common use for 10 years.

Toffeebythesea · 29/06/2023 23:15

Did I miss some sort of manual when creating my Vinted account which explained that I am supposed to leave 5 stars unless there is a problem. This is not what 5 stars usually means. I'm not sure how I would have know that it is different on this platform

It’s always pleasing if someone sends an item immediately but sellers on Vinted have jobs and other responsibilities that may prevent that. It’s not like buying from a shop where people are employed to offer a good service. I always post as soon as I can but if someone happens to buy an item on a day I’m working I won’t be able to drop everything and post immediately. I do let my buyers know if I can’t post straight away though and will explain why. I did once send something about 15 minutes after it was purchased as I happened to be heading out anyway. The response from the buyer was “oh there was no need to post so quickly, I’m not in any rush”. Ffs. Just say thank-you!! 😂

I’ve never had less than five stars from a buyer so it seems most people don’t expect an immediate dispatch.

There is a review policy. But going by this they should really have just used a three star system. At least we all now know not to be upset by a four star rating!

TheFrogAteMyHomework · 29/06/2023 23:29

Well, yes, I know. I work full-time myself and actually can't always collect things from the lockers nearest my house for a day or two.

But, like others have said, it would never occur to me to leave the highest rating by default. I mainly just let Vinted do it automatically so will be giving 5* automatically. I only leave specific feedback for people who've gone out of their way to be helpful.

I don't know how a new user is supposed to pick up on this culture of 'top score unless there's an issue' because that wouldn't be my assumption.

That's why I said the thread is weirdly fascinating - it's weirdly fascinating how there is such a range of views and how het up people can get about 4 vs 5 stars. I learn something new every day on Mumsnet.
