Rwanda ruling

Suella Braverman says today's Supreme Court ruling against the UK government's plan to send immigrants to Rwanda is a disappointment for most people.

Not for me it isn't.

AIBU? Am I in the minority?

I think this thread illustrates some of why this country is so divided.

One person makes a statement which is not true (Germany also deporting people to Rwanda). Despite all the subsequent comments pointing out this is not true, it gets quotes as fact time and time again.

It’s either not reading/understanding or not caring

the headline is attractive and supports their view so they can ignore any facts that disprove it

It was sarcasm

It reads like something pretty vile so I’d suggest if that’s an error you get it removed

itsgettingweird · 29/06/2023 19:40

She's my MP.

Anyone want to see the people opinions should read the responses to her FB page post.

I'm guessing no one really thinks this is the will of the people or against British people.

You'd expect her Fab page to be full of her usual praise gods.

OwlBabiesAreCute · 29/06/2023 18:48

I was going to say the same. Germany are not doing it although it's been proposed. Looks like the UK government is first to actually try and implement it.

although it's been proposed

Who has proposed it?

There are British territories that could be used. Places where there was not a genocide in recent memory. If you accepted the case for those who did not come to the country on a visa or pre-approved scheme should not wait in the UK whilst a claim is processed.

And why, exactly, are they "British territories"? Oh yes, because of COLONIALISM, aka helping yourself to other people's countries and property all over the world. Perhaps start by making reparations. And learning some basic history.

2 of us have missed it so I don’t think it’s as obvious as you think it is…

Actually no, it’s sarcasm but that’s not really making it any better. It’s a poor “joke”

I'm not surprised it failed . Why choose Rwanda no wonder people are filled with horror .
I can't grasp why they don't spend the money wracking up the staff to process applications including the backlog and allow those who can remain to get on with their lives and anyone not allowed is removed .
I so believe we should automatically expel / remove anyone who commits a crime on British soil . We have enough criminals of our own .

I work with asylum seekers and am pro-immigration. I am also massively against the Rwanda proposal.

However, I don't think it's as simple as just increase the number of decision makers.

Massive amounts of resources and investment needs to be made a local authority level. If the 100K+ people in the asylum system get their decisions expedited, where will they go? Asylum seekers are in Home Office provided accommodation, when they are told to move out, there will be a massive influx onto the local authority Homelessness Teams.

I do agree about the levels of Foreign Offenders that are in the asylum system, and those abusing the system (Deliveroo anyone?) is where the Home Office focus needs to be.

I'm sorry you didn't understand that I was pointing out that just because (the pp thought) Germany was doing something doesn't mean it was the right thing for the UK to be doing.

And I’m sorry you don’t understand that a couple of us pointing out your joke has landed badly isn’t a personal insult, and you’re allowed to say “my bad” and get it removed without the patronising responses

AuntieJune · 29/06/2023 20:15

It's populist bullshit. 'The people' are some overwhelming folksy mass that will this, want that, somehow it doesn't chime with what the actual people in the country vote for, say or think.

Trump was always talking about 'the people'.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 29/06/2023 20:19

I dream about Braverman taking a plane to Rwanda.

GoodChat · 29/06/2023 20:22

General rule that I follow: if Cruella thinks it's a good idea it's a fucking abysmal idea.

EuripidesEumenides · 29/06/2023 20:26

Some disappointment here. Now Bravermen et al. can just go "well we'd have stopped the boats but the leftie lawyers stopped us. We are but poor martyrs standing for Britannia."

My absolute sympathy for the handful of poor souls actually shipped out under the policy but I feel it would have been better in the long run for the policy to be allowed to run and fail abysmally.

Coffeetree · 29/06/2023 20:32

£140 million pounds of our money was given to Rwanda for this scheme, and not a single person has been sent, and now its been confirmed that the scheme has been unlawful from the beginning.

£140 million of our money absolutely wasted.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 29/06/2023 20:37

Sewerella griping that the ruling is 'unfair on those who play by the rules' after her flagship policy has just been ruled illegal is breath-taking in terms of the sheer brass neck. Shouldn't be surprised since it has long been abundantly clear she has no shame, humanity, or much in the way of intelligence.

Cherchez les funds.

You can bet your arse that somewhere a Tory MP has pocketed a packet.

Exasperatednow · 29/06/2023 20:44

The thing is, I'm not convinced the government ever intended the policy to work otherwise they'd have no way to go 'look over there'.

If they did, they'd have legal routes and a way into work to counter our lack of people to do jobs (since brexit).

But instead they proposed an expensive (£169k per person plus £140m), illegal, distasteful policy that does the Uk brand no good whatsoever.

I didn't take it as a personal insult. Nor am I going to ask for it to be removed.

I dream about Braverman taking a plane to Rwanda.

Rwanda is a lovely country and everyone we met was great. Don't wish her on them.

Poor Rwandans. Surely there's an unpopulated atoll somewhere she could go.

LaylaLjungberg · 29/06/2023 20:50

pointythings · 29/06/2023 18:22

Well, I'm not. Bring in safe and legal routes. Get enough staff in to clear the backlog and then process the people who come in. If that can be done efficiently - including removal of people who don't have a genuine claim - then the UK won't be seen as an easy target.

Oh, and collaborate internationally, including with those people on the other side of the Channel, what are theyb called again? Oh yeah, the EU.

100% this.

the80sweregreat · 29/06/2023 20:52

That 140 million could have gone towards a pay rise for the NHS workers or the teachers
It's just criminal what they do with our money
( I know this is a very simplistic view, but it is just bad and they get away with it too )

eurochick · 29/06/2023 21:01

I'm not disappointed. We need to find a sensible strategy to deal with immigration. The Rwanda plan is not it.

(And what is with the bizarre posts about the Germany post? That was obviously sarcasm. Have they not taught the bots to recognise that yet?)

Simianwalk · 29/06/2023 21:02

Only a psychopath would be happy with sending vulnerable people to Rwanda.
