Settle an argument re: pegs on the washing line

Important stuff this!

DH and I disagree about what should happen to pegs on the washing line after you've taken the washing in.

DH takes all of the pegs off, every time. He claims that if you don't do this, it creates work next time you hang stuff up because you have to move the pegs out of the way.

Obviously, I just leave them up and he thinks this is bad practice. I think taking them down creates work the next time because you have to get them all out again.

So, over to you!

YANBU = Keep the pegs up
YABU = take the pegs down every time and put them in their special little peg bag.

What say you MN? 🤔

I leave them in the line. My dd12 has a different technique and yanks the washing and pegs off in one swoop and then everyone walks around with the random pegs that didn’t get spotted while putting the washing away still stuck to their clothes.

Teaslurpershutup · 23/06/2023 22:54

I wipe the line down before I hang anything on it sonthe pegs still being there would get in the way. Also bugs like to make homes and webs in pegs.

LorW · 23/06/2023 22:55

I leave them on there I just pop them to one side so no issue when putting clothes back on, I’ve had my pegs 4 years now and apart from a few lost ones all are in good condition and they’ve been outside the entire time 😁

The male spins a small mat of silk and deposits a 'packet' of sperm from the testes onto the silk mat

@CoffeeLover90 that sounds absolutely vile.

I'm so glad I'm not a spider female, on the receiving end of a little packet of spider sperm from his spider willy. 😳

I take each peg off and put in the peg tin. Your dh is right.

Anjo2011 · 23/06/2023 22:57

Pegs in the peg bag, line down and covered. Then it’s ready to go for the next time.

Teenagehorrorbag · 23/06/2023 22:57

I've always left mine out all summer. No problems with rust or bother about moving them, and it saves loads of time.

BUT - I always have problems with cobwebs on the line which catch loads of little flies and I have to wipe them away before I can hang out my washing (rotary line which doesn't fold down between uses). Yesterday I noticed that most of those are hanging between the pegs and the line itself, so I put the pegs away and today - lo and behold - far fewer cobwebs!

So I may be a convert. Time will tell whether I decide it's more trouble to wipe cobwebs or put the pegs away each time.....Grin.

EightMonthsScared · 23/06/2023 22:58

Pegs away else they get birdshitbon them

I read this as 'baboon shit'. That'd be disturbing in so many ways.

I want to agree with you I really do! But they go grubby left on the line 😞

closeyourpapers · 23/06/2023 23:02

Ha, I'm the same PP. 😆
Drawing pins left in a board but lined up. And laundry strewn hedge. Jekyll and Hyde, me.

Eomt · 23/06/2023 23:04

Your behavior has shocked me to the core!!!

Theoldgreygoose · 23/06/2023 23:07

I take them off every time and put them in a plastic bucket. They go brittle/rust if left out.

sandyhappypeople · 23/06/2023 23:07

AlisonDonut · 23/06/2023 21:08

We have a apron that the pegs live in whilst not on the line.

oh my god.. so you wear the apron when you're putting the washing out and taking it in? That's genius!

I'm doing this from now on!

Lifeetc · 23/06/2023 23:07

My lovely stainless steel pegs taken off the line and stored in a handmade peg bag, our washing line is a wall mounted air dryer so that gets taken down and put under it cover
Pleases me no end :)

PumpkinTruffles · 23/06/2023 23:08

Always take them down - I have a retractable line but would still put them away if I didn't. My mum leaves hers up and they get spiders in them and also get grubby and leave marks on clothes. I think it looks messy too personally.

EightMonthsScared · 23/06/2023 23:08

Your behavior has shocked me to the core!!!

I'm imagining you abruptly turning away @Eomt, drawing on your smelling salts for support.😂

I leave mine on because I'm lazy, but they do break much quicker this way.

RunningUpThatBuilding · 23/06/2023 23:10

I bought this…… and it’s amazing! Has a shoulder strap so it’s very easy to get /tidy pegs while dealing with clothes. Simple but very effective!

My 86 year old grandmother is horrified if she sees pegs left on a washing line, she calls it "slovenly" 😆

And she was correct, you slattern!

Rubycoola · 23/06/2023 23:13

I leave mine out. I have a straight line snd it's easy, they're generally in the right place each time. No issues with them rusting or breaking or even any bugs really.

I'm quite fastidious in many other ways but this just doesn't bother me. I couldn't care less if my neighbours notice and/ or judge!

Murphs1 · 23/06/2023 23:13

Have never even thought about this. But have Always left on as easier to hang next load than in an out a basket for them I think.

sandyhappypeople · 23/06/2023 23:13

I'm with you OP! I don't like the messy look of it but it IS harder work to get them down and put them back up again so I don't bother! I take them down for the winter though!

ChristmasKnackered · 23/06/2023 23:14

I have this same issue. DM (who lives with me) will leave them all out, whereas I put them all away.
The washing line is retractable, so I put that away each time, too, as it cuts across the patio and makes doing other jobs (eg getting the lawn mower out, etc) much more difficult. DM doesn’t do these other jobs so can’t be arsed to put stuff away - drives me potty!

PrincessesRUs · 23/06/2023 23:14

Always always take them down - if you leave them out the plastic ones go brittle and break and the wooden ones get wet and mouldy

BePatient · 23/06/2023 23:14

It's much harder to leave them out because you have to aim harder to get the right part of the washing attached to the peg. I always end up having to remove the whole peg and start again and they inevitably fall all over the floor. Nah. Life's too short. Easier to start nice and fresh each time.
