Settle an argument re: pegs on the washing line

Important stuff this!

DH and I disagree about what should happen to pegs on the washing line after you've taken the washing in.

DH takes all of the pegs off, every time. He claims that if you don't do this, it creates work next time you hang stuff up because you have to move the pegs out of the way.

Obviously, I just leave them up and he thinks this is bad practice. I think taking them down creates work the next time because you have to get them all out again.

So, over to you!

YANBU = Keep the pegs up
YABU = take the pegs down every time and put them in their special little peg bag.

What say you MN? 🤔

Good Lord. ALWAYS bring them in. Next you'll be saying you don't colour match your pegs to the clothing you are hanging out to dry.

Shudder.

TroysMammy · 23/06/2023 21:59

Not only do I take my pegs off I also collapse my rotary drier and cover it with a waterproof zip up green condom.

I think we also need to know if the OP would leave drawing pins in a noticeboard 'ready for next time' if she took down an out of date notice. The pegs sound just a gateway offence frankly.

Not OP, but of course! Then you know you'll have them to hand when you next want to hang something up. No wondering where you placed a small quantity of small and sharp objects.

They go in my custom, made to order peg bag, because I am that sad. 😁

That's really impressive - I need to know the back story as to how this became a necessary thing for you to order.

What's the point of having a washing line under a porch? Surely the point is that you can hang out washing and it is dried by the sun and blown by the wind?

I can open all the doors up so it gets a breeze and it has a glass roof. Gets unbelievably hot. My washing dries in about a second.

We have a spare line in the garage, this time of year it's like drying clothes in the oven.

TokyoSushi · 23/06/2023 22:01

Absolutely pegs away!

DH is a pegs out person and it drives me nuts. Yes there's the degradation of the pegs but it also is really annoying the next time, the pegs aren't in the right place, spend ages moving them around, just no!

AlleycatMarie · 23/06/2023 22:02

Leave them in the line!!! Life’s too short to bring them in and it just makes more practical sense! YANBU!

Topseyt123 · 23/06/2023 22:03

Take them in except if I am leaving washing out overnight.

If kept out of the elements for as long as possible they go much less mouldy and last a lot longer.

Trumpton · 23/06/2023 22:04

I share washing line with DD who lives next door. She is a peg leaver I, most certainly, am not.
I have learned to compromise… I slide the legs to one end of each of the 4 lines so I can’t see them from my windows. All is happy and calm.

Helenahandkart · 23/06/2023 22:06

Leave them out all year round. Always hang the washing out in the same order so the pegs are correctly spaced - far apart for sheets, closer for t-shirts, very close for socks. I estimate it saves me upwards of 27 minutes a year in peg management.

MysteryBelle · 23/06/2023 22:07

Poor aesthetics to leave pegs on the clothesline. It’s like leaving the used bounce sheet on the floor where it fell when you took the laundry out. Leaving the clean laundry bunched up in a pile without ever folding it. It’s wrong.

All of you with disintegrating pegs... Sort it out! Get some proper pegs - Scottish pegs. http://exquisitescotland.com/k-pegs/

They are strong, attractive, effective, won't harm the environment like plastic will, will outlast you AND your children and can be left on the line indefinitely without it having any effect at all.

I live in a maisonette with sadly no garden, used to have a big detached house with a washing line, I miss clothes pegs and fresh washing on the line

Spiders live in them

H34th · 23/06/2023 22:09

Pegs away every time.

My mum lives them out. They fade from the sun, get rotten springs from the rain, break from the changing temp.
She almost never has enough pegs even though she always buys new pegs.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 23/06/2023 22:09

Keep them up but hanging loosely so they can easily be pushed along the line. My family have a tendency to put the legs back on the tightest but so you can't move them easily.

gelijkheid · 23/06/2023 22:09

I leave my colourful plastic pegs on the line and they haven't rotted or discoloured. Wooden ones did and rusted.

Missedmytoe · 23/06/2023 22:09

I leave them on the line.

BigMacExtraPickles · 23/06/2023 22:10

Take pegs down, collapse rotary line and put cover on!

Pegs do go brittle if not and the line gets covered in spider webs 😳

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 23/06/2023 22:10

They should be brought in for the winter though, particularly if plastic

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 23/06/2023 22:11

I sadly don't have a line any more but when I did I used to leave the pegs on it but then when they all started going rusty and cracking I stopped doing that.

closeyourpapers · 23/06/2023 22:11

Plastic pegs are ugly things. I don't want to see them strung forlornly across my washing line/ eyeline.
Most of the time I don't use the line or pegs and just hang stuff on the hedge. It's what the Elizabethans did. Good enough for me. It does increase the chance of spiders though.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/06/2023 22:11

I leave them on the line, but it’s a whirly line and that gets put in the garage when not being used, so they are not in the sun or getting wet and rusty. Does this make me common or slovenly? Brilliant!

CoffeeLover90 · 23/06/2023 22:11

I don't because cob webs appear overnight. Cob webs mean spiders. Also yes, they get ruined by the sun but mostly spiders.

Also re your wondering if spiders have willies, I wished I hadn't googled but I did..
Unlike insects and other organisms, male spiders do have a penis. The testes are located on the underneath of the abdomen, and connect to the surface via a small tube. The male spins a small mat of silk and deposits a 'packet' of sperm from the testes onto the silk mat

7eleven · 23/06/2023 22:11

It does look messy, I do agree, but laziness wins the day.
