To think it’s ironic all the stops are being pulled to rescue 5 people from a submarine

Yet…. The world allows a boat with hundreds including children to sink

Its not a race to the bottom. Which is ironic. Because I suppose it is

MrsMillhouse · 20/06/2023 22:56

i sincerely hope the people trapped in the sub are rescued and safe and sound.

but it just feels like some lives are valued more than others

Exactly

MyLostSock · 21/06/2023 01:51

When making rescues at sea, I don't believe crews stop to consider these things about the people that require rescuing first:

  1. Their nationality
  2. Why they are there - refugee? Adventure? War? Mucking around? Fishing?
  3. Can they refund the costs of their rescue
  4. Their wealth
  5. Will it cause it political incident

No. They just do they best they can with the resources they have to save as many lives as possible - I'd hope.

The people on the boat were desperate

Would you risk your life in one of those boats? They have other choices, staying in many European countries. Surely France or Spain are preferable to risking your children’s lives? For what? There’s no land of milk and honey here!

Huh? Where do you think the Mediterranean is?

AuburnConkers · 21/06/2023 02:24

The media interest in this story is linked to the story of the Titanic… which continues to fascinate people - the ‘unsinkable’, opulent ship slowly going down on its maiden voyage and taking 1,500 lives with it. And the eerie wreckage with the grand staircase still visible, there’s something very compelling about it.

Then there’s the sheer horror of what these people in the sub must be going through if they’re still alive. It’s like something out of a film.
Add those things together and it’s not surprising the story has grabbed the world’s interest.

I don’t think you can see it as a comment on some lives being more valuable than others.

AuburnConkers · 21/06/2023 02:40

And the media was equally transfixed by the rescue effort to save the Thai boys trapped in the flooded cave and the trapped Chilean miners. Nothing to do with them being rich or white Europeans - obviously!

2 out of the 5 people in the submarine are wealthy Pakistani men. Sorry to ruin your little narrative... This is a vile thread. The rescue teams also rescue less wealthy people who also make the conscious decision to board boats and end up in distress. I hope the sub is found in time.

Yes, and one of those wealthy Pakistani men is only 19. Poor souls.

Who is aboard OceanGate's missing submersible Titan? - ABC News

A Titanic expert, an adventurer, a father and his son and a CEO: These are the people on the missing submersible

A renowned Titanic expert, a world-record-holding adventurer, two members of one of Pakistan's wealthiest families and the CEO of the company leading an expedition to the world's most famous shipwreck are facing critical danger aboard a small submersib...

They did for the Thia cave boys
Help was offered to Russia for the sunken Kursk sub. But they kept refusing until it was too late. I do hope they are found safe and well but everyonr who needs rescuing should be given the same chance.

Boomshock · 21/06/2023 03:25

O1h · 20/06/2023 23:05

Unusual rescue situations always get more "things" thrown at them, rescue services and militaries get to train on extreme things they don't normally get to do and press interest obv because of the unusualness.
Both are awful situations.

Yes, I remember reading about the Chilean miners and NASA was involved in their psychological welfare.

They were used to astronauts on space stations sometimes throwing tantrums and refusing to engage with them etc even though they had willingly put themselves in that position and would have known to expect different emotions etc. so apparently it was a great learning experience to deal with people trapped somewhere who hadn't chosen to put themselves through it.
Also they were in charge of the other survival stuff like regulating temperature and trying to keep them as healthy as possible so they could survive in there and survive the rescue.
It was like conducting an experiment they never would have had an opportunity to conduct in real life because it wouldn't have been ethical....and as you said it's training experience for the militaries and rescue services.

This submarine thing is NOT horrific. They’ve chosen to undertake something which is dangerous, in a vessel which constantly goes offline. I hope they reimburse the public services on the search and rescue team

Sane could be said for those getting in boats - yes the reasons are different - but there are huge costs to life and rescue teams etc
It’s about time we started to prosecute anyone arranging these irresponsible boats.

The submarine thing IS horrific
The terror they must have felt when they realised they were trapped under the sea is the same for rich and.poor alike
Slow suffocation as the air runs out is as terrible for rich and poor alike

Wealth shouldn't be considered when contemplating the dreadful fates of others

DreamTheMoors · 21/06/2023 03:39

You’d think that both the U.S. and Canadian very sensitive sonar would pick up a hammer banging on the hull of the mini sub if they have no other communication available.

There were several individuals who expressed their concerns about the Titan and its safety. One, a former employee, was fired after he balked at the serious design flaws and the company’s refusal to change them.

I sincerely hope they make it to the surface and are unbolted out of the Titan, but I don’t have high hopes at this point. I read that if it’s on the ocean floor it will be exceedingly difficult to get it up.

BlinkeredBay · 21/06/2023 04:18

MrsMillhouse · 20/06/2023 23:43

Of course not. But the media focus and international effort on the boat tragedy compared to the 5 people in a sub is really telling.

Because the whole situation is unusual?

which is why you’ve posted on MN about it?

BlinkeredBay · 21/06/2023 04:24

Theoldgreygoose · 21/06/2023 00:18

Everyone deserves help when they need it, but the outpouring of sympathy in some cases is much more than in others, which is not right. The people on the boat were desperate, those in the submarine are basically out for a very risky adventure.

A life is a life, personally I feel equal sympathy for both.

Both took risks, both potentially will
lose their lives.

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/06/2023 05:25

The news media have a hierarchy of death in terms of which lives matter in reporting. These are (mostly) rich, White, English-speaking people from the Global North. They're at the top. I hope they're found safe, as anyone would. But yes, it is a depressing reminder. My family is Iraqi. One thing that always stays with me is the 9/11 memorial. The people who were tragically murdered on 9/11 have a name, and an inscription. The Iraqis who died in the later invasion are nameless and uncounted.

HolyGuacamole28 · 21/06/2023 05:58

This post/thread is grim. And sad. None of us have the right to judge anyone else. Decisions are made every day based on survival needs. Their wealth has nothing to do with it. What about everyday car crashes versus princess dianas death. Why did she get media coverage but mr smith down the road does not? Because the media need to sell stories.

yadeciN · 21/06/2023 06:07

I would comfortably bet my own house on the following statement.
If there was submarine of refugees stuck by Titanic it would recieve same or more (number of people probably makds difference) resources and press.
You are comparing incomparable.

Fairyliz · 21/06/2023 06:09

I do understand what you are saying but don’t we all do the same to a certain extent?
Eg op has two children that she can afford to feed, with a little money to spare for treats.
Why not send the treat money and 75% of food money to people starving around the world. Then her children can survive on a couple of slices of bread and margarine a day?
Surely it’s an inbuilt survival thing to look after our ‘own’?

drpet49 · 21/06/2023 06:19

Moopsi · 20/06/2023 23:12

All human lives are equally precious. I find it horrifying that so many people are callous about these people's lives because they are rich.

It isn’t about rich people. It is about people knowingly putting themselves at great danger.

I feel the same about people who climb Everest or undertake a very dangerous activity.

Would you say the same thing about the people getting on boats to cross the chanel?

MichelleScarn · 21/06/2023 06:26

The 'they have deserve it if they die' attitude and making out that this is a virtuous stance is absolutely disgusting.
I'm assuming those with this attitude agreed with the Cologne attacks in 2016 and the women deserved/should have expected it because 'rich'?

MichelleScarn · 21/06/2023 06:27

they have money should say above.

Vegetus · 21/06/2023 06:29

A lot of white guilt on display here from the middle class Mumsnet crowd who talk a good game.

*EscapeRoomToTheSun · Yesterday 23:06

Yes. Wealthy white lives. Lives from the global north. Fucking depressing.*

Perhaps you should get your facts right, before you vomit such racist bile. There are 2 Pakistani crew on there. I don't know what's worse, your bigotry or the fact that you thought the other 2 lives and heritage were not worth mentioning.

53andABitPodgy · 21/06/2023 06:36

I can hear the pearls clanging as they are clutched, and the Prosecco going flat, as I type.
