To think it’s ironic all the stops are being pulled to rescue 5 people from a submarine

Yet…. The world allows a boat with hundreds including children to sink

Awful thread.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 21/06/2023 00:17

This is a fucking horrible thread. Shame on you @MrsMillhouse for starting it. The resentment and anger towards rich white people on this thread is fierce and toxic.

I think it' extremely unfair to blame and shame OP for resentment and anger shown by other posters towards rich white (and presumably also rich British-Pakistani) people.

Whether you agree with OP's reasoning and thought processes or not, I don't see how you can wholesale apportion shame to somebody for asking why the world seems to value the lives of some people over others, when their point is that ALL people in need of rescuing should be equally valued and cared about.

Well then the guardian must be lying.

Excuse me? They aren’t there yet. They are enroute to Newfoundland…did you even read it before posting it?

Talk to me when the number of vessels, helicopters, drones and military aircraft match what the Greeks had on site within a few hours.

This sub rescue- it’s taking days for help to get out there.

Theoldgreygoose · 21/06/2023 00:18

HorseyMel · 20/06/2023 23:07

I didn't realise we'd started to ration rescue services - inversely related to a person's wealth. Long live the Labour Utopia of Mumsnet! ✊

It's always been a maritime tradition to help souls at sea.

Everyone deserves help when they need it, but the outpouring of sympathy in some cases is much more than in others, which is not right. The people on the boat were desperate, those in the submarine are basically out for a very risky adventure.

kirinm · 21/06/2023 00:22

@BCCGoAway why don't YOU try to read in between your sanctimonious posts? I said France are SENDING a ship and actually Canada are already involved. Not just the US coastguard as you claimed.

Probationnotontarget · 21/06/2023 00:22

The people on the boat were desperate

Would you risk your life in one of those boats? They have other choices, staying in many European countries. Surely France or Spain are preferable to risking your children’s lives? For what? There’s no land of milk and honey here!

Tinktravels · 20/06/2023 23:06

It's devastating. I hate this need for people to compare which tragedies in life are worse than others. It's not a competition.

And they are completely different situations. There does really need to be an International effort to stop illegal smuggling of humans . Refugee status must be established by the right paperwork and proper systems . Otherwise money talks And it will continue to result in overcrowded dangerous crossings .

This thread is disgusting and beyond callous. I do wonder what people get out of comparing tragedies in this way. It seems to happen constantly these days. “Whataboutism” is rife. Feels very much like a race to the bottom. The lack of genuine empathy in society today is atrocious.

100% this

I correctly stated that the US coast guard has 1 (one) remote vessel on site where the Titan was last known to be as of now.

Canada has sent equipment which isn’t even out there yet.
And France’s ship is similarly not there yet.

I don’t know why you are trying to pretend that Canada and France are on site where the Titan was last known to be when they are not currently on site. You don’t seem to know the difference between “sending” and “on its way” or “enroute to Newfoundland” versus actually on site in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and doing SAR operations.

Ponoka7 · 21/06/2023 00:26

BCCGoAway · 20/06/2023 23:48

They did their job. You can’t teleport six ships to the middle of international waters 80km off the closest shore. I think it’s disgusting to imply they allowed a ship to sink…like they even have the power to stop boats from sinking.

The investigation will decide that. They certainly broke maritime law. Just like in the 2014 incident, when the Greeks put a rope around a boat and tried to tow it to Turkey, drowning the women and children on board. Then subjecting the survivors to inhumane treatment, the ECHR might have to be involved. There are suspicions around the numerous drownings that happen in the waters between Turkey and Greece.

weareallout · 21/06/2023 00:27

I'm struggling to empathise with people who have £250k to spend on a folly that's known to be highly dangerous & then incurs thousands in rescue charges: they knew the dangers

Wow. You seem to think you know that the investigation will say they broke maritime law. Biased are we?

Tophy124 · 21/06/2023 00:30

It’s honestly awful when set out like that isn’t it. I hope everyone on the sub is found safe and well, I feel horrendous for all the migrants that lost their lives and for the families who may never know what happened to their loved ones. Having children in those circumstances die is just so so sad.

French police regularly slash up the tents and destroy property if asylum seekers, including those housing children. There's accusations and evidence of violence and medical care isn't given. We all saw how moderate the French police were when they attacked football fans with tear gas for no reason.

No, it's already being said by experts and human rights experts. Here's one that has been quoted:

"Omer Shatz, an international lawyer and legal director of front-LEX, a legal hub challenging EU migration policies in European and international courts, told Al Jazeera it was clear Greece should have immediately performed a rescue.“Under maritime law, Greece was obliged to launch an urgent search and rescue operation, twice: first as the coastal state responsible for the search and rescue zone in which the boat was located, and second as the flag state whose vessels were for so many precious hours accompanying on-scene and interacting with a vessel in distress,” he said.
“No less than three maritime conventions obligate Greece to render immediate assistance in this state of affairs,” he added." But obviously you've got a lot of bias going on.

My good God, shame on you.

Saracen · 21/06/2023 00:44

It's always strange when some lives seem to be so much more valued than others.

I used to think about that while at the bedside of my ill newborn. No expense was spared to save her life. All the equipment, the tests, the one-to-one nursing care. It must have cost a vast sum. I was thinking how much further that money would have gone in another country to provide some simple treatments which could have saved many children's lives rather than just the one.

Also a few weeks earlier her grandfather, who had dementia, had died of neglect in an NHS hospital 50 miles away. The hospital didn't have the resources to look after him at even the most basic level, though it wouldn't have cost much. Their risk-averse policies even obstructed his desperate relatives from coming in to give him the care he needed. I guess babies are more valued than the elderly.

I’ll wait for the investigation and stick to the innocent until proven guilty standard of justice.

Bias is presuming guilt on the basis of armchair experts who don’t have all the facts.

Yes. Wealthy white lives. Lives from the global north. Fucking depressing.

2 Pakistanis out of 5 on board.

2 out of the 5 people in the submarine are wealthy Pakistani men. Sorry to ruin your little narrative... This is a vile thread. The rescue teams also rescue less wealthy people who also make the conscious decision to board boats and end up in distress. I hope the sub is found in time.

The vessel which sank was offered help which was turned down....more than once. Various agencies assisted

So yabu

Not true. That is a lie from the Greek government

I think it's not a race to the bottom and we don't need to make it one. It's horrific in both cases.

This is unfortunate phrasing.
